Publisher's Summary

A romantic cabin getaway doesn't go exactly as planned.

High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fiancée isn't just mumbling in her sleep—she's whispering back.

Great

Enjoyed this story when it first appeared on Reddit many years ago. One of the few books to really creep me out and make me afraid to go camping in the mountains.

Narrator did a great job!

Story is great, audio is not...

I almost exclusively listen to audiobooks for books over 200 pages...but I came across this book before there was an audiobook available and read it physically. That experience was fantastic... loved it...5 stars for the story. I enjoyed it so much that I bought the audiobook immediately when it was released and have just now listened to the audio version for the first time. I did not like the narration if this one. If audio was the only way I experienced this story...it would have been 2 stars for me. The narration didn't work for me...the voice felt very immature to me and I did not care for the female voices done here. Especially in a story where there are a lot of "voices" being heard...this just didn't live up to my expectations. If reading the physical or ebook is an option...I highly recommend that over listening to the audiobook.

fantastic

This story is very Lovecraftian. It's an excellent example of horror and terror. I highly recommend it.

Loved it!!

This was a great book with many creepy parts that really surprised me. The only negative thing I have to say is that the narrator would speaker loudly for all the dialogue of the characters. So it was always as if they were talking to one another from separate rooms. A bit annoying as when the characters were speaking louder or yelling it didn’t hit as intensely as it should’ve. Otherwise great great book. Will be listening to this again and looking forward to Felix Blackwell’s next book.

Entertaining horror story

I decided to give this book a try given the hype it has received and the various reviews mostly separating readers into the “love it” or “didn’t love it” categories.

The narration certainly added to the creepy atmosphere of the story. At times, I was as queasy and nauseous as the characters. The narrator’s ability to tap into this physical response from me places the narration into 5-star category.

The story was creepy and at times the “writing” in my opinion seemed raw and unpolished but that’s what made Stolen Tongues authentic as it wasn’t being dragged down by some imagined sophistication on the writer’s part. Blackwell has written an entertaining book and that’s exactly what I was hoping to listen to.

The only part of the audible edition that threw me off and threatened to dampen the experience was the “author’s explanation” at the end of the book, so I clicked the pause button on the final few words.

Good Premise Ruined by Poor Execution

I was disappointed by how unrealistic and cartoonish everyone would act around what’s supposed to be a freighting and supernatural premise. The author doesn’t know how to write female characters simply due to its cringeworthy and unrelatable character development. The narrator doesn’t help either with how the female leads are voiced as if they’re perpetual 16 yr olds throwing temper tantrums. Not a horribly written book, but could’ve been so much better with a more talented writer.

I was looking forward to this..

I was genuinely looking forward to this as I’ve heard nothing but good things about the book .

Unfortunately the narrator is incredibly annoying and tries to do too many voices and doesn’t pull off any of them successfully.

The book itself becomes repetitive you find yourself in the same situations time and time again.
