Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

In Everthing Is F*cked, Mark Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive.

Conventional wisdom does not take into account the negativity that we feel. All it says is that we should focus more on working hard, getting that promotion, starting a family, and doing everything else to bring more positivity into our lives rather than dealing with the problem itself. But conventional wisdom has things backward. You see, it is not our success that fuels our positivity but positivity that fuels our success. In similar ways, it is positivity that makes us achieve more by changing our lifestyle, habits, and viewpoints.

Publisher's Summary
Author of the New York Times and international best-seller Unfu*k Yourself Gary John Bishop presents a no-holds-barred guide to breaking through our cycles of self-sabotage to get what we want out of life.
In Unfu*k Yourself, Gary John Bishop told us it was time to stop making excuses - to recognize and take responsibility for the negative self-talk holding us back. In Stop Doing That Sh*t, he builds on that message, teaching us how to stop self-sabotaging behavior.
Bishop explains how our destructive cycles come down to the way we’re wired. He then identifies different types of people and the ways we f--k ourselves over: We can’t save money. We land in the same type of toxic relationship. We’re stuck in a rut at work. Analyzing why we act the way we do, including what our common grenades are that blow up our lives, Bishop then shows how we can interrupt the cycle and stop self-sabotaging our lives.
Authored in the same in-your-face style as Unfu*k Yourself, Stop Doing That Sh*t will help us get in touch with our psychological machinery so we learn to interrupt negative thoughts and behavior before they start, allowing us to give our attention to something else, and start to find success in the areas we thought we never could.
We can take back our lives. We may have f--ked up in the past, but Stop Doing That Sh*t will show us how to break the patterns in order to live the lives we yearn to have.

One of best self help books!
I just finished listening to this book (actually listening to the last 2 chapters 10 time or so) and can't recommend it enough. I read A LOT of self help, I mean self development books. I read them, get some glimpses of their explanations for why I am so anxious and some nuggets of wisdom or strategies for what I can do about it, but they never really stick. This book was clear and to the point. It captures what we face as humans in a very clear and no BS way. It is also efficient and to the point at only 4 hours and 41 minutes. It drives me crazy when I am listening to a book and the author goes on and on and on about something that could be communicated in a quarter or less of the time/text. This book lays it out there with a bit of tough love - you have fears, that is part of being a human. You have fears that are specific to you based on what you heard, saw and experienced during your early years. These fears are like a leash on your life, subtly and unconsciously keeping you from changing because change the change you seek is not a sure thing, which means there is a threat of it not working and our reptilian brains HATE this. Thus, we get an uneasy sensation in our body, we think one of our well-worn thoughts "It is too much." "I am not good at that sort of stuff" etc. etc. etc. and then we do what we have always done, procrastinate, do the easier task, ruminate, eat, drink or smoke away that uneasy feeling etc. etc. etc. Somehow this book made all of this clear to me in an instant. I have realized many of the pieces over and over through my reading and through talk therapy, but this book helped me see it in a clear, no nonsense way. I now know what I need to do. I need to choose differently. I need to pursue what I WANT not what I have always done to avoid risk. I need to accept that my past was the way it was. It helped me develop good qualities in some ways and messed me up in other ways, mainly by creating a lot of fear and anxiety I seek to avoid everyday. I can't change what happened, the hardwiring in my brain that resulted from it or all the ways I have let it rule the 42 years I have already lived. What I can do now is choose differently. I can BE that person I want to be in the future. I can feel the fear and uneasiness and be strong enough to resist the urge to go back to the safe patterns of thought and action that result in me being stagnant. I can hear by brain replay all those thoughts that limited me and NOT BELIEVE them. I can take whatever step big or small that leads me in the direction of the future self I want to be. Clearly, writing this review was as much for me as for you, but this is the wisdom I gained from this book. I also laughed out loud many times, which is fun! He is a hoot! Get the book. I know you will not regret it!

All I can say is whoa. I listened for a long time, waiting for the author to get to the point. He did a really good job sucking me in and setting up the problem, so when he finally dropped the solution, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I loved this book and will likely listen again!

Wow! Priceless. More insightful then the last 8 years of therapy. Incredibly on point. I can't recommend this book enough to any one who has struggled with depression, not understanding why you can't put your finger on your thoughts. I want to send this book to everyone I know. Great follow up to Unf*ck Yourself.
This book is everything my multiple therapists could not explain to me, or help me to understand why I think like I do. Thank You! Thank you! Oh, and brilliantly entertaining along the way.

Incomplete on Ending Self Sabotage
In short, this book feels incomplete because it’s only in the last chapter that he truly begins to present a solution to self sabotage.
All of the previous chapters go into detail as to what the problem is and why the problem is bad. It basically asks you to dissect your patterns and self limitations.
First, you have to identify yourself limitations via 3 forms of self sabotage.
Second, you have to accept yourself limitations without blaming others or yourself.
He doesn’t recommend affirmations, gratitude, or meditation to overcome self limitations.
The grand solution to self sabotage is so anti-climactic by saying you’re an essence supposed to live with self limitations and use a compelling ideal future to motivate better choices every single day.
If visions of the future were sufficient, self sabotage wouldn’t be an issue! You were just intuitively press on, boldly, in the direction of realizing a dream.
While like his imagery, Scottish voice, and motivational push, this book doesn’t really communicate how you overcome self sabotage. The book title is in accurate. This concept is incomplete.
This does not truly provide a solution to self sabotage.

Seems like he can really nail the subconscious pitfalls really in depth well. I like the suggested pivot method to overcome the self negative talk. But the end game is to be like a big corporate buisness have grand plans to be rich to fulfill your happiness sort of a crap ending.

A needed kick in the ass
Gary delivers a much needed message for those of us that have been frustrated by where our life is at and where it might be headed. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to break that self sabotage cycle so you can begin to look forward and build that life you want. It wont be easy ----Plan to ask yourself some probing questions----But, if you take the message to heart the days of self sabotage will be behind you and life will be what you want it to be. Time for me to get to work. :)

Disappointed
First off, UnFu*k Yourself is one of my favorite books, ever. That says a lot because I read a lot. Second, this book does have some great points but they are few and far between.
The 3 chapters that struck me as useful were
"You"
"People"
"Life"
These chapters were gold and could have been expanded. In fact I think this book had enormous potential if Gary had organized it better. I feel like most of it was him repeating himself over and over, yelling at the listener in his Scottish accent, telling us to "stop doing that sh-t" and at the same time telling us "you're hopeless so stop trying!!"
Then he wraps it all up by saying "be like Star Trek and look into the future".. Seriously? Don't get me wrong, I'm not a wilting lilly. I enjoy a straight shooter...but to rant and rant and rant and then to suggest we just be like Star Trek because...y'know, it's like in the future n' stuff? No sorry. This is a fail.
I'm really astounded by the flawless reviews. I guess everyone else gleaned a whole lot more than I did.
In summary I feel like Gary took on a project he couldn't finish and was out of his depth.

I can see the benefit for the unenlightened
Loved the brogue so it gets a solid performance for me.
This book is a great kick in the butt for those starting from bottom of sorting themselves out. For those who have already done the work of acknowledging just how and where they are self sabotaging, it gets a tad bit draining.
I was left on more than one occasion asking, okay, we know this, now what?

It's alot of information to take in, but gary keeps it real and funny. I just finish the audiobook and have also ordered the book. This is something you need to listen to several times. I recommend this audiobook!

The first book was better
The first book, Unf*ck yourself really spoke to me in profound ways, and because of that I was motivated to listen to Stop Doing That Sh*t to get going on changing my ways, but this book felt more like preaching, in my opinion. Individually, I'm in a place of immediate self development and have several resources. The content and intention is good, but I found myself getting lost in the messages and the advice not really sticking to me. I'm going back to the first book to re-listen now!
