For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Why Do I Keep Blocking My Own Path?
Self-sabotage:
Engaging in behaviors or thoughts that are contrary to our best interests.
Behaviors that, instead of bringing you closer to your goal, actually push you further and further from eat.
Enough of the world is out to halt our successes, create roadblocks so why would WE also limit our abilities?
I often find myself setting up big goals then failing, repeat repeat repeat. Why do I keep blocking my own path?
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Judy Ho’s audiobook and took many notes while listening.
Each lesson has short and long activities to get pen to paper and actually help you discover why you do the things you do AND how to re-train your brain!
In us is our biological drive to avoid pain, conflict and danger. Our biological drive to obtain goals and reach satisfying results.
Our brains like routine so something new or unknown can be read as a stressor by our brain. “In a mistaken attempt to protect you, your mind holds you back from a potentially positive change.”
Our first step to eliminating, or at least curbing, self-sabotage is to be AWARE of our behaviors.
For me, awareness is actually very hard to achieve. You have to break out of your old routines and your old patterns and must be willing to open up to the idea that your old way of doing things simply isn’t bringing you closer to your goals.
Once I felt comfortable with awareness, I needed to take ACTION.
Now what? Now that you’re aware . . . What will you actually do?
How do I talk to myself? The way I speak to myself within my own head would be appalling to someone else. Would I talk to my best friend that way? My child? The bagger at the grocery store? No way!
We speak to ourselves much more harsh than we would ever think to speak to someone else.
Avoiding deadlines, knowingly eating too much are issues I’ve struggled with.
But now, I can “forgive” myself for eating poorly and give myself permission to start fresh and eat well for the day.
This is just one tiny example of a self-sabotage behavior that I’ve been able to successfully change and alter the course of my life.

What's your reason for self-sabotage?
I think this might have been the first audiobook I've listened to that was of the self help genre. I found it very easy to listen to whether I was driving around town, out on a walk with my toddler, or even on a bluetooth speaker at home. I was a big fan of the narrator, her voice and speech patterns and felt like I was getting a free therapy session. I appreciated how Dr. Judy taught us how to find out what out L.I.F.E. obstacle was, how to look for common triggers for self-sabotaging behaviors, and how to make a plan going forward.
One of the big things I enjoyed about this audiobook was that Dr. Judy included specific patients and shared their actual answers to the accompanying exercises. Since I was listening to this book out and about, I didn't always have a notebook or pen handy for the exercises. In that aspect, I think that the physical book may have been easier for me to complete the exercises in the desired time frame that Dr. Judy had set for her listeners/readers. However, I think the audiobook was still helpful in finding the ways you are self-sabotaging. I can see myself listening to this audiobook again in the future and would be interested in listening/reading more by Dr. Judy.

Refresh your life cache annually with this book
I am no stranger to self-help books. The obvious gotcha with ANY type of book in this genre is obvious: you only get out of it what you put in after reading. You can agree and "oh yeah" all through the title, but if that's where it ends, you're not really helping yourself and you are actually wasting a lot of your time. What I really enjoyed most about this book is two-fold: first, with it being an audio book, I was able to enjoy some motivation while focusing on another self-improving act (walking on the treadmill). I really love audiobooks for this activity, and the performance for Stop Self-Sabotage is very well done; the reading is clear, concise, thorough and pleasing to my ear. Believe it or not, that is a deal-breaker for me, so it's why I was so pleased in this instance. Second, because it's an audio book, I was happy to have the option to print out a workbook that the author gives instructions for throughout the book. I was concerned that any action items or directives I needed to take from the book may be lost because of its format, but the link for the free print-out directed me away from that potential pitfall and offered some wonderful exercises and helpful action items to improve my approach in many ways. One exercise in particular resonates with me strongly and is very helpful, and that is Developing Values-Based Goals. Some of the other exercises that I found helpful where the "Yes, But" exercise and "Keeping your Values Handy." I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking to figure out the real reason you're not happy or moving in the direction you want and correcting it once and for all, and I intend to re-listen annually to be sure I keep myself in check.

Great Content, Dreadfully Boring Narration
Dr. Judy is a fireball of a coach and psychologist. I wish she had narrated the book herself because the content is difficult to get through since it deals with real life change. The narrator is so boring, I can barely stay engaged long enough for the content to make an impact. I think this is one book I will buy a paper copy of instead. The positive side is that the content is excellent and Dr. Judy knows her craft.

Perfect for this Self-Sabotaging Woman
I wanted to devour this book as soon as I downloaded it. I had just been talking to my husband about how I get in my own way from accomplishing the things I want to, and found this book particularly timely as I start my own "Self-Care September." I want to change my habits, and this book really helped me to get to the root of what keeps me from doing so.
Dr. Ho recommends taking your time to read and process the info in the book, and I did just that, to keep from self-sabotaging my reading and learning experience! I made sure to download the enhancements that come loaded with exercises for the end of each chapter to help you recognize your tendencies and ponder on how you can change your patterns.
This book focuses on how to get the most out of not just your health, but also work, social and family. I found her relating that most of the way we are is because of how we are raised. Most people are self-sabotagers, most people struggle with willpower, most people don't take the time to look at how to change their mindset and habits. Do yourself a favor and read this book, do the exercises and practice changing your habits.
I do wish Ho had included a bit on how to raise your children to have a greater sense of willpower and self confidence.

Not helpful
This was a difficult book to read. It read as if it was a textbook for students. It would’ve been helpful if everything including space for journaling was in the enhancement. I had a hard time trying to find the exercises in the enhancement and the examples that she stated were in the enhancement. It also would’ve been helpful if she would’ve taken different examples Ie procrastination, dieting, dating And given them their own chapters. it was very hard to followAnd I think the late person could’ve done without all of the references to psychological terms and who came up with the psychological terms. I did not come away feeling prepared to stop self sabotage. Honestly I fell asleep several times while reading this book it was so dry. I finally gave up and stopped reading it after the fifth chapter.

some helpful tips and perspectives for change
I discovered this author through the #sexabusechat chat, hosted by @RachelintheOC, on Twitter.
if you're new to self-help, this might be the perfect book for you. if you're not new to self-help, you might still find some helpful information and tools to help you break through.
didn’t like: points deducted for preface AND introduction.
wasn’t sold on the narrator.
introduction should have been its own chapter with exercises at the end, instead of sort of thrown in.
the explanation of trigger origin and time spent and exercises suggested for it were quite poor. missed the mark there, bigtime.
journaling is really antiquated.
throwing around all the psycho-technical or little psycho catch-phrases terms, like the general public is supposed to know (even if you already explained it once). they were confusing. I need stuff dumbed down for the little people (i.e. myself).
liked: setting journaling aside, some great exercises to use to check yourself before you spiral. also never heard the tip to "do the opposite".
and really like that the author is aware that everyone has to find what works for them.
some very helpful information.

So helpful
This book helped me recognize and address small self sabotaging behaviors that I was not even aware I had. I did not go into this book with specific issues in mind, but I found it applied to me more and more as I continued to listen. She doesn’t address these as negatives, just things to acknowledge and address. I felt so positive as I worked through the exercises. I liked that it wasn’t just about identifying issues or triggers, but about how to deal with them and replace them with better actions will hopefully become habits. Such a good listen!
