Publisher's Summary

“I inherited my brother’s life. Inherited his desk, his business, his gadgets, his enemies, his horses and his mistress. I inherited my brother’s life, and it nearly killed me.”

Thirty-four-year-old Derek Franklin, recovering from a race injury and facing an uncertain future, is thrown into familial chaos when his older brother Greville dies from a bizarre, seemingly random accident.

Filled with regret over the brother he never really knew, Derek must take over Greville’s complex gemstone business, a business of which much seems to have been left unfinished.

With little more to go on than his brother’s expensive toys and a few vague diary entries, Derek becomes more and more convinced that his very straight brother was brought down by some very crooked men.

Dick Francis is a bestselling writer who mixes mystery with horse racing for satisfying, clean well-plotted whodunits.

Buried audio tracks in Chapter 9.

There’s a quiet audio artifact in Chapter 9. It’s faint but it’s driving me nuts 😩

Great story teller!

Simon Prebble is so good! Love the way he delivers the story. Dick Francis weaves a story that always makes you think that you’ll never find the solution but bit by bit, with well-placed dead-ends, the solution appears. Fun read!

The Master Does It Again!

This is one of my favourite Dick Francis novels and I was so glad to see that it has now come to Audible since you can no longer listen to it on YouTube. Francis’s plots are twisty, his way of thinking leaves you feeling dazed, yet you know and can fully grasp every move the characters make and why they make them. The narrator is not the best at reading Francis’s books, but he certainly doesn’t disgrace himself.

One of the best

This is one of my favorites. I was so excited to find a few new Francis books on Audible recently!

One of the things I love about Dick Francis’ work is how timeless it is. You don’t even notice the lack of cell phones or internet. I am not a horse person, yet I love these books and revisit them regularly.

Simply the Best

Mr. Dick Francis never disappoints! Even decades old novels still entertain, providing a window on obscure industries, businesses and various forms of art. A master storyteller.

A little disappointing

I’ve read three other Dick Francis books and this one seems a little slower than others. I still love his turn of phrase and stellar use of language. He always pulls me into the moments.

Spoiler alert: The one thing overall that bothered me was Grevall’s commitment to straight morals yet he has an affair with another man’s wife. Not moral. That derailed the story for me. Unfortunate.
