Publisher's Summary

I was 12-years-old when the world ended. For eight years I've survived in this sh*thole once known as Earth, fighting the alien parasite that mutated most of the population into bloodthirsty freaks while the rest of us became the lunch special on their alien menu.

Now things are changing, and not for the better. The parasite is evolving, becoming smarter, stronger, and deadlier.

They've already stolen everything from me - my home, my family, even the man I loved. It's time for this bullsh*t to end once and for all.

My name is Bixby, and I'm the resistance.

We on the same page?

After perusing the many glowing reviews I had to wonder if we were reading the same story? I found only one somewhat negative review. The rest are predominately five-star reviews extolling the virtues of a kick-butt leading lady. Now I like a strong leading character as much as the next person, but is there any bias here? Just wondering…
Emma Bixby is a strong-willed, brusque leading woman. She is portrayed as a strong kick-butt heroine, but her strong-willed temperament is more of a defensive position than one of strength. She is obsessed with her ex-lover Sam, who went out on a mission one night never to return. The inability to let go of Sam is the root cause of her emotional and social insecurities. She gave her all and loved one man, which did not end well. As a result, she has built walls to shut people out and prevent herself from becoming close to anyone. Luke is the perfect example of this behavior. Her difficulties with the other operators is another example. Bixby is a survivor from an alien parasite that infected most of the world’s population, turning them into raging zombie-like creatures called leeches. She was recruited into a group of security operators that help protect the city from the infected and the cannibal raiders called ravagers. This is the account of The Life and Times of Bixby. Three.point.five for a solid character with great potential. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Could’ve been great...

Still trying to figure out how this book received such great reviews. There are things I liked, but more so things I didn’t…just as the book was starting to pick up, the epilogue begins...seriously?! I purchased this book as it came up in a search for dark fantasy- there is a darkness to it, but not as dark as I had hoped. The beginning started great and I thought yes, this is going to be a good book, but it failed to materialize.

Reviews stated the main character, Bixby, was strong, kick-a**, etc.- and she was fairly strong, unfortunately there’s an annoyance to her that over powers any kick-a** traits, combined with too many insecurities, the character fails. You can be damaged and strong without the annoying parts and it’s a bummer the author didn’t go that route. As for character development- you get a brief scene of Bixby admitting she’s scared and staying with her lover for the night, but that’s all. You will find yourself asking “who were the characters again?”. Then there’s the dialogue- if you enjoy childish jokes you would have heard in elementary/junior high school, this book might be for you. If you are looking for a dark, adult series, look elsewhere.

The good? There’s an underlying story that has potential if the author rids the book of the flaws listed above. Honestly it’s a bummer because this book could be fantastic. The narrator was wonderful.

Overall, I can’t recommend in it’s current form. I really wanted to like this one but felt I wasted my money.

Need a little more info? Aliens (called leeches) have taken over. A group of people are trying to survive while the aliens are showing signs of increased intelligence, ravagers (cannibals) complicate matters, throw in Bixby’s relationship with Luke, and that about sums it up.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: swearing (lots of it), words such as ‘tards, cripples, oldies, bimbos, or like-words are used fairly frequently, father is abusive to child and mother, killing, guns, a scene where a ravager grabs the main characters breast, multiple sex scenes, knives, death of loved ones, and probably more I’m missing. This is not for those who are easily offended or kids.

Kick A** Main Character!!

Bix was 12 when the world as she knew it ended! Her mother sent her "to play" because her father was in one of his "moods". He was abusive and her mother did all she could to shield Bixby, so that day, Bix went to the park. While there something strange happened, a mist started creeping in. This mist made it impossible to breathe, and Bixby thought that this was the end, but she eventually was able to breathe again. When she got up, she saw a homeless man becoming..... something. Running home, she realised both her parents were dead. Devastated, she had no idea what to do, but someone came to her rescue and now 8 years later, Bix is still with the group and still fighting to survive.

This was a solid 5 star read, even though one thing really, really annoyed me with it!! Usually when a book has something annoying in it, it loses a star right away, but this was too good to lose one!! I loved everything about it except the part with Sam. I feel like I missed a book because something obviously happened and I don't know what!!! Apart from the feeling of missing a big part of Bixbys life, this book was amazing.

Bixby was a kick ass character. Gosh, she didn't take any s**t from anyone!!! She has a heart of gold but only a very few people see it. She isn't afraid to do what's needed and isn't afraid to stand up for herself. She was awesome even when she was obnoxious!! The author wrote her in such a way where you can see how and why she is the way she is, though the bit with Sam would make me understand her more I think ;) Anyway, every character is extremely well written and developed and memorable, which is important.

I also loved the plot of this!! How the mist came about is believable, the way it changes the people is well developed and also the way they are advancing and adapting was well done!! It's so refreshing to have a new and unique post apoc book filled with strong female characters. I applaud the author for this and am really looking forward to more from her!!!

In all, this was an action packed, edge of your seat, scary read. I flew through it and actually jumped a few times while listening. It's bleak and gruesome at parts, but it was captivating and amazing. I also have to applaud the author for the fact that the female lead isn't in a love triangle, nor is she reliant on a man!! She sleeps with one of the group and while she has feelings for him, it's not a major part of the story. Bix is well able to handle herself and I loved that!! Brilliantly written and perfectly executed, this is a must read!!!

Marnye Young was also amazing. The level of emotion she showed during scenes really made the performance pop. She gave her all and it showed. She also had plenty of tones and voices for the different characters and gave each of them their own personalities.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Twenty year old girl.

You would think that if this happened when you were twelve, that eight years later you would not act soo childish.

One Hour. Seventeen Minutes. Ten Seconds.

I just lost one hour, seventeen minutes, and ten seconds of my life before DNF'ing this jumbled mishmash of poorly written, cliche-filled, derivative SLOP, and I write this hoping you will avoid the same fate. EVERY. POSSIBLE. TROPE of the admittedly oversaturated zombie subgenre is portrayed as blandly and tritely as possible. There. I just wasted one hour, twenty minutes of my life.

I want my money back - and the book was free.

It was interesting

You can sometimes tell the difference when a woman is the writer and when a man is the writer. A woman dwells more on her feelings. Bixby is a character that should have been killed off, however, I am looking forward to the next book.

disappointed

it is a great set up and the people are believable and play of each other well...... but the MC. i was so let down that after the first 3hr it just fellt like she was a just a nuisance. like how many times can she fuck up before she just gets sent home or killed. I won't ruin it but I'm glad it was free.
