Archaeologist Saul Lazenby has been all but unemployable since his disgrace during the War. Now he scrapes a living working for a rich eccentric who believes in magic. Saul knows it's a lot of nonsense except that he begins to find himself in increasingly strange and frightening situations. Story
Robin Loxleigh and his sister Marianne are the hit of the Season, so attractive and delightful that nobody looks behind their pretty faces. Until Robin sets his sights on Sir John Hartlebury's heiress niece. The notoriously graceless baronet isn't impressed by good looks, or fooled by false charm. He's sure Robin is a liar - a fortune hunter, a card sharp, and a heartless, greedy fraud - and he'll protect his niece, whatever it takes.

Luc O'Donnell is tangentially - and reluctantly - famous. His rock-star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next 20 years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and someone who has never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. He’s perfect boyfriend material.

Story
England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless, and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage. Curtis's search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

Lord Courtenay has been called many things and has never much cared. But after the publication of a salacious novel supposedly based on his exploits, he finds himself shunned from society. Julian Medlock has spent years becoming the epitome of correct behavior. As far as he cares, if Courtenay finds himself in hot water, it's his own fault for behaving so badly - and being so blasted irresistible.

PERFECT conclusion to the series!!!
The best in the series and an all-star, absolutely perfect conclusion! After reading this book, the whole series became not just my favorite by KJ Charles, but my favorite in the genre. If you're unsure about starting the series, this book alone makes reading the first two absolutely worth it. If you're reading reviews because you're concerned about Kim in particular (the spymaster love interest who lies to Will), have no fear: these concerns are addressed seriously, smarty, and fully throughout book two and three. You will go from hating Kim in book one to outright loving him in book three, and it will be EARNED! As always, KJ Charles knows how to write believable people, engaging stories, and settings that transport you into the world.
Kim and Will both go through tremendous growth, and Kim's growth in particular is beautiful and well-earned. There are so many tender scenes throughout the book that I highlighted something nearly every other page. It felt like the entire thing was an ode to vulnerability in love and finding a Happily Ever After. My heart was mush by the end!
The mystery, action, and conflict of this book are also perhaps the best of the trilogy! Meeting Kim's family felt like a natural, necessary progression of the story, and the way that goes down does not disappoint! You'll want to shout at them and see them hurt, and Will just might channel all that for us readers.
After reading this, I may or may not have made Sidecars for the first time in my life. (I see why Kim and Phoebe like them.)
Cornell Collins's performance is perfect as always.

Loved it
I absolutely adore KJ Charles’ books. This one did feel a little bit like fan service, in how everything ended. I would suggest that you only read Subtle Blood after the previous books in the trilogy, and not as a stand alone book.
I love KJ Charles’ characters and world building and the way she uses language. Which brings me to Cornell Collins and his lovely narration, it is just as wonderful in this book as the rest.
I can not recommend enough, if you are into realistic historical queer suspense / detective books in the romantic book category. By realistic I mean that this series doesn’t incorporate fantasy elements, and people generally behave as they would in the time period the book is set. Otherwise it’s just about as perfect book for escapism as I’ve ever read… unless you’re not keen on handling the war theme considering current world events.
But I think it’s simply marvelous, Darling!

Fantastic series!
I bought the first three books in Charles's newest series. I have to say that all three books are fantastic! Well written, fast-paced, very likable and believable characters, and a time period that one can easily relate to. The action is nonstop and the resolution is perfect. I actually stayed up until 5 am in order to finish listening to the third book. K. J. Charles has come a long way with her writing. 90% gripping story 10% m/m romance/graphic sexual scenes. This is a good balance. Cornell Collins has to be one of the best, if not THE best, reader for these stories. His voice is perfect. He does a range of voices and accents and all of them done masterfully. I will eagerly await the fourth installment in this series.

I am utterly obsessed with the Will Darling Adventures.
I love all three books in this series and Collins’ reading of them so much. I’ve easily listened to each three times now. Collins reads well, despite how laughably terrible his regional accents are. A good & fitting ending to a brilliant, thoroughly enjoyable trilogy.
