The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right | Summary

Book Preview:

Over nine chapters, Gawande makes a detailed and persuasive argument for the use of checklists, not only in surgery, but also in other fields where their use is not as widespread, such as aviation and construction, which have made checklists mandatory. As a consequence of his interest in implementing checklists during surgery, the World Health Organization put Gawande in charge of a team which investigated a trial of surgical checklists over eight countries. This trial showed to most people their great worth, to the extent that over 2,000 hospitals globally, including 10% of US hospitals, have introduced them.

Checklists are good

There I summarized it for you, don’t waste an Audible credit on this.
Best part was that I got the summary and didn’t waste my time with the whole book.
Nothing practical to take away.

Good book, bad sunmary

The original book is fantastic, but this summary is not. In a summary you really want to be able to find the information you are looking for easily. This is impossible in this book because there are no chapter headings! Even in the narration. The narrator just goes from one chapter to the next without saying what the chapter will be about at the beginning of it. It’s just like a stream of consciousness.

Dreadful narration

Good messages but the narration was dreadful. The narrator cannot read a whole sentence in one go; she stops every few words and her intonation goes up and down. It is so distracting!
I wouldn’t recommend it for that reason.

Good Summary of a Simple Concept

Been using checklists in engineering for many years before this book. Blindingly obvious but the impact is enormous. If only everyone did things right!
