Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams | Book Summary

What would you do if someone were to tell you that sleep is one of the most important things you can do in this life?

The book Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker, PhD shows how sleep is actually much more important to us than what we initially thought. He explains the deep-rooted reasons why modern human civilization as a whole does not get sufficient sleep, and shows just how badly the consequences of sleep deprivation can affect all of us.

Sleeping sufficiently and sleeping well is not as simple as just lying in bed, but it is not especially difficult, either. With just a few simple tips and tricks offered in Why We Sleep, you will be able to correct those poor sleeping habits and enjoy a full night’s rest. As you gradually unlock the true power of sleep in your life, you will realize the physical, mental, and emotional benefits that proper, sufficient sleep brings.

It was eye-opening!

It was eye-opening to learn about wine, caffeine, the circadian rhythm, our master clock the “suprachiasmatic nucleus”? I will definitely make lifestyle changes because of everything I learned from this book about sleep and those behaviors that affect it.

My health is better than ever.

This book changed my life. I’ve now claimed my nighttime hours through a bedtime ritual, and sleep more and deeper than I ever have — and my health is better than ever.

Work-obsessed and sleep-deprived.

The studies and analysis proving the health and long-term benefits of good sound sleep challenge the glorification of being work-obsessed and sleep-deprived.

A lot of basic information.

A lot of basic information. Knowing what happens in the brain when we sleep probably doesn't help people who can not stay asleep.

This is one of the most interesting!

This is one of the most interesting and awe-inspiring books I’ve listened to in the last couple of years. I learned so much about the far-reaching health implications of sleep and sleep deprivation. So good in and of itself, but packed with a ton of self-care and pastoral care applications.

Thank you and well explained!

This book answered 95% of my "why", "how" and "what" questions about the condition I developed that caused me to turn into a medically boarded case from a long-term position as "high-flyer" and "top performer". Thank you and well explained!

I would highly recommend this book.

I would highly recommend this book. Even though we know instinctively that sleep is important, this book offers fascinating depth in the sleep research done so far. You will get to know why and how a consistent good night’s sleep improves your immunity, health, and well-being in general.

A wake-up call to anyone!

A wake-up call to anyone who questions the importance of good, natural sleep and how it can have an impact on society as a whole. Not as much a "how-to" as it is a "why to".
