Publisher's Summary

I was only 27 and I already felt like my life was over. Then I fell asleep in statistics class and all hell broke loose.

I've been summoned to a world completely unlike my own. Elves and monster girls roam the streets. Complicating matters, a powerful race of demon called the Vrag have invaded Telos, and somehow I've been put in charge of protecting two princesses from all manner of mayhem.

The old Cal couldn't handle this. But when I stumbled through the dream portal, I became something more.

I'm no longer Cal Newhart, divorced college student and ex-marine. Now I'm the Paladin, a supernatural knight of legend.

It's not going to be easy. But with most of the male population withered away, someone will have to defeat the Vrag and repopulate Telos.

I've got a wild ride ahead of me.

Marcus jahn

Marcus’s whining in his narration is just gross. It brings down every book he is in just a bit IMO. I like the story and female narrator.

Mc voice.

The Mc’s voice actor sounds like he was vetted from a pool of the most perverted teenage nerds in the US. Sounds like he’s a straight up stereo type of the character trope. How am I supposed to believe this is some burly military vet when the he sounds like a 16 year old pervert who closest encounter with a woman was through a screen. The story seems to have been written by someone of the same caliber. No build up no nuance. Just quick disjointed excuse for a story and we’re thrown into sex. Maybe with a better voice actor this may not have been as bad but both together? Unbearable.

belongs in the bins

Both the writing and narration of the mc are garbage. For what is backlit as such a badass warrior, he does nothing but cry like a toddler told "No." It's a shame I can't get my money back after wasting my time on this trash. Truly is a shame you can't give ZERO STARS ACROSS THE BOARD!!! for that is all this deserves

Nice premise terrible execution.

The book has a nice idea and start. The idea of an Ancient spirit thats that's defender of a realm and needs a summoned host to inhabit to fight for the realm is interesting.

However the writing leaves much to be desired. The Mc is ex military yet seems to have none of the skills of a marine. has supernatural reflexes but almost loses multiple times to baseline people. He also swings wildly to overconfident from cowardly in the beginning

The voice actos do a great job of differentiating the characters. but the Male MC voice comes across incredibly whiny and isn't helped by the writing.

bad male narrator ruins what could have been good

I had hopes for this as something that while not great would have been atleast entertaining but the male narrator sounds like he is cpnstantly whining even when something good happens he makes the mc sound like he is whining. Female narrator did a good job though.

Has an older fantasy feel to it!

This story was pretty fun without many of the common tropes found in harem books.

The romance isn't very heavy in this book. The MC and the girls just seem to gravitate to each other.

I'm looking forward to the next book and seeing more of the world that Carlsson created! Like I said above, it has that "old fantasy" feeling to it that is nostalgic.

I love the voice of the Goldstein! But Jahn's... I don't want to sound like a prick but there is just something about his voice and how he speaks... but that could just be me so I didn't want to lower the review for something that might be just me.
I mean, how can someone help how their own normal voice sounds...?

entertaining...except for

what a surprise, in more ways then one. for the most part I liked it. I really didn't care for Mr John's voice of the character. I felt it was outside of the context or the mood or the words. very enjoyable story though.

his voice hits worce as it goes

The Male narrator is at least twice as painful to listen to as you th think he will be whin hearing the sample. i might have been able to enjoy this book if it had a good narrator or the girl read th hr whole book. it's a campy book but I can dig that but the dudes voice.

Okay, after that ending I need book 2!

MC is a former soldier who is trying to readjust to his life now he is no longer in the service. After having dreams of being a paladin and protecting a princess on the run, he is transported into that reality.

This was my first book from Roland Carlson and I really enjoyed it, Great fantasy world where the plot is established from the get go and each character in the series has the own defined personalities and motivations.

Like is said in the title. I'm looking forward to book 2!

A fine story met down by a terrible narrator

The story is nothing special, but fun, however the male narrator is dreadful. Every single sentence is overacted to the point that pretty much every single climactic moment is ruined as I just wanted to cringe.

It honestly sounds the way a 14 year old would when telling a story and trying to be dramatic.

The beginning

This book is the dream of mine. It builds the foundation of the coming story. They have taken the time to lead through the beginnings and to me this makes it easy to fall into the story.
The dual narration was great and well worth it. If I had one gripe it would be the comedy that that Marcus tried to install in the MC.
All in all a great beginning.
