Story
Maximo Strident, war veteran and member of local law enforcement, never wanted to enter the dungeon. With promises of wealth beyond his imagination, his squad mates managed to convince him. Max isn’t a Knight, so he has no magical equipment or spells that could help him against monsters. What he does have, however, are the sword forms he learnt at the Blade Academy. These forms are formidable martial arts that make him the match of Level 0 monsters. But Level 99 monsters? He doesn’t stand a chance.

Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Carl was a regular construction foreman. Not the worst, not the best, and definitely not the thinnest. Even so, he didn't deserve that heart attack! He really didn't deserve being reborn into a dog-eat-dog world as a dragon. To be fair, it’s nice to be at the top of the food chain. Now Carl just needs to learn how magic works, which monsters are safe to eat, and why his hoard is so important to him. Dealing with change is hard enough, but he has enemy dragons incoming, hostile environments, and foes constantly trying to get bragging rights by taking down a dragon.

Just one semester until graduation, and I died saving a little girl. This wasn't the end, though, as a deity chose me to save another world. I woke up in the body of Kupiec Aiden, in a world where magic was real. Unfortunately, unlike many isekai novels I've read, I retained none of his memories, and had to learn everything. His family took me in, and I recovered from his sickness before learning about magic, or Aether as they called it.

I was the Ashlord—a primordial, an apex predator amongst beasts, commanding legions. I fell, despite my power, although not due to the strength of my enemies...but the betrayal of my own kind. A voice whispered to me as I lay dying on the cold ground, promising rebirth and revenge. Accepting his offer, I fell into a timeless sleep. I awaken to the cold and crushing dark of a forgotten grave and discover that I have changed. No longer a primordial force of nature, I now inhabit the body of a once immortal cultivator, the very same one that tried to claim my core as I lay dying.

Publisher's Summary
Summoners are born, not made.
For Bran of Ealdor, this is the one thing stopping him from becoming a member of the legendary warriors known as summoners. They are gods among men who can call monsters into battle to fight alongside them.
Mages, Rangers, Beastmasters, Protectors, Hunters, and Lancers. These are the six classes of summoners.
None of which Bran can become.
Until one day, when a griffin crash lands into the stable, a summoner riding on top of the beast.
That day, everything changes for Bran. He is thrust into a world of magical creatures and their masters, and he soon discovers just how unique he is among them. But being special puts a target on his back. Some of the most powerful summoners in the world would do anything to discover just what makes him so special.
Summoner’s Shadow is a LitRPG series that occurs in a medieval fantasy world. Bonding with monsters grants a summoner special abilities, dictated by the monster type and their class. Monsters can be leveled up, augmented, and evolved.

Sum it up
This is a good point from another reviewer and why its a good point is because its brought more than a dozen times.
"I found the protagonist's history as a war vet utterly pointless too - he should have just been an unknown stable hand. Every time this guy goes into combat it just feels amateur hour to me." The dude is 20th something, Not only that, but he was a spearman, that is it. Some low level foot soldier.
It was not some bowman or master bowman, but hey lets have the MC pick up a bow for the first time and start to use one like he is robin hood, also what is the point of this academy if he doesn't attend it? This whole story is not believable and the interactions of other characters are the same.

pretty amateurish
this book just feels amateurish. From unrealistic dialogue (ex: when Bran meets Olaro), to plot conveniences (oh how convenient that Olaro, this person Bran met out of chance, is his new tutor), it feels like someone's first draft.
firstly, the old cliche of the main character being the most special person on the planet. Summoners are super rare, so you're already pretty special and lucky if you are one. but oh no no, this isn't good enough for MAIN CHARACTER GUY. he neess to be the MOOOOST special out of special people, so he can be better than all the other special people with little to no downsides
second is the shear convenience in some parts of the story. Oh, how convenient that an enemy school JUST HAPPENS to infiltrate our school through the very same alternate dimension our main character is in, and in just such a way that they need to pass by our main characters despite them being several hours away from their destination and on a side of a mountain. wow, how lucky!
at one point, a griffen has its ears perked up (eagles down have ears) and the griffen can conveniently track the infiltrators through scent, despite being a flying predator.

Freaking Awesome
This is an awesome book. You follow the journey of Bran, late bloomer Summoner. He get his long wish of becoming a Summoner. The story is very well written with enjoyable characters. The system is great. Great twist in how humans don't have powers, the monsters do. Get to tame monsters and feels a lot like an adult Pokémon (got me hooked off that alone). Can't wait for second book!

it's good a unique take on magic
I usually don't right reviews but I've seen two form a Joe and Joseph and honestly I don't get the hate. yes he is a veteran but that was with the spear why in the world would it mean he should be a magic god I think he learned how to use it fairly well. then there is the other review the author stated multiple times that he had some archery training (not to mention I'm sure magic plays a role with his development) tldr it's good ignore the haters

Very enjoyable listen - anxious for more
I took a chance on this one since it’s from DB King and I’ve liked some of the other series. I was really happy I did, it was a great listen and I’m very excited for more to come.
I suspect I’ll probably be too impatient and read the next one that was just released to Kindle. Still anxious to listen as I think this series will have some replay value.

Pleasantly good listen!
Story
The story is an interesting take on summoners, its been a pleasent and enjoyable listen. I've read the review from Joseph with his 2 star rating and i will disagree about his comments of the main character. I've enjoyed the references about him being a soldier and it helped drive the decisions he makes durring battle, which seemed like smart moves to me. The plot has a good deal of mystery which I will be looking forward to finding out about in the future volumes.
Audible performance
Mr. Rising did a fairly good job with being the narrator for the story. He did a great job in coming up with the different voices for the characters. Though my few negatives on his narration was saying "times" while listing out the inventory items for each item and I felt there was a slight offness to his performance. Might have been due to seeming a bit slow. Reccomend maybe to speed up to 1.1 or 1.2 on the narration speed setting. But seriously though it was an enjoyable time listening to the story.
Thabk you Mr. King for another great story

Started out okay, then went downhill
If it's not bad enough that you try and blatantly rip off Philosopher's Stone, doing so while making your early 20s cast of characters seem more naive than a trio of eleven year-olds is pretty embarrassing.
I found the protagonist's history as a war vet utterly pointless too - he should have just been an unknown stable hand. Every time this guy goes into combat it just feels amateur hour to me.
Ultimately, I'll not be continuing with this. I found it frustrating and, when it wasn't annoying me, dreadfully dull.
