Bleh

Mark is superb at his voice acting as always. None of my complaints are about him. I'm just tired of writers writing "tough strong independent" women as if they were just men with female names. Main character is a bait and switch. You think it's the military man but it's really Angel, an archeology professor. She berates everyone she meets. Emasculates every man she meets. Insults every good word or deed thrown her way, and no one checks her on it. Oh, and she's super cool and smart and able to do anything, even outfight a male gang member in a knife fight (keep in mind she's an academic). Not for me. Tired of this kinda thing. It's lazy storytelling. There's no arc to her character because she is a caricature. Just bleh.

good stuff

Fun adventure-style story in a near future setting, but everyone has access to FTL because of a revolutionary leap forward in technology. This sort of thing is always really fun. Combat was top notch. Narration was great. Definitely looking forward to book 2.

Racism?

This book has a lot of racist undertones. The black characters speak the same way throughout the book. The way the other ethnicities are portrayed is just wow.

Another win for the Chaney-verse!

JN Chaney did not go wrong with adding Rick Partlow to his team. Excellent story, excellent cast of characters, and a very promising beginning to a new series! If these guys keep it up, this series will rank right up there with The Renegade Star series, Ruins of the Galaxy, The Messenger, The Reaper, The 5th Column, Wayward Galaxy and more!

Of course, an Audible Book review wouldn't be complete without a shout out to Mr. Mark Boyett who's voice acting was pretty well spot on!

Nope

I noped out of this one pretty early.

It started off on a bad foot with a gunfight the reader has no context for, so it dragged on like a droning church sermon.

Then the grizzled ranger feels intimidated by a civillian screeching at him and I just had to nope the fuck out.

Chaney and Partlow

I was thrilled to see my two favorite scifi authors working together. This book really delivered. The action kept me on the edge of my seat, but the characters were also hilarious. Chase is a fun character and plays off his costars brilliantly. Humor is such a hard thing to get right, it seems like, but it was done well here. Good stuff.

Sunkiller

If it wasn't obvious by my rating, I really liked this book. I'd actually put it right below Renegade Star and Backyard Starship as far as Chaney books go. Great story and will be curious to see what happens next.

A great start to a fun new universe

I loved the premise and plot of this story. The idea that we could achieve this kind of stuff in my lifetime really gets my mind racing with possibilities. It's the same thing that drew me in to Chaney's Backyard Starship. And just like that book, I was enthralled by the storyline here. The characters are well conceived and interact naturally, but that is all elevated by Boyett's narration. He does such a wonderful job telling this story that you really get lost in it. I was so impressed by the work here and I seriously can't wait for more. I hope Chaney and Partlow keep working together, because it seems like a match made in heaven, especially with Boyett providing the vocals.

Keep up the great work, guys.

good one

It's an enjoyable story, but at the same time, I found frustrating that the university professor was much more of a badass than the trained ranger with a lot of field experience and no im not trying to say she is less than the ranger but one is a civilian and the other a soldier and in the end i ended liking the college kid more than the soldier and honestly i don't know if i would be buying book 2

Good as it gets!

Wonderfully written story, There are several great writers out there; however, it's hard to find them. Every book on Amazon has 4.5 stars .. which generally means nothing. This book is simply a 5-star work, and you have me as a fan already with Wayward Galaxy ... keep it going... Mark Boyett is also Awesome! Regards, Michael Lambert
