Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Two hundred years ago, aliens invaded Earth. A violent war followed. The enemy won. Some of us escaped, most of us didn’t. On Proxima they flourished - the invasion forgotten. On Earth we floundered - the horror began. Their world is advanced, peaceful, and secure. Our world is broken, savage, and overrun. A new invasion is coming. A hunger that has swallowed half the universe. They don’t care which planet we live on. They want to end us all. But where there is life, there is hope. And where there is hope, there are heroes. This time, vengeance will be ours.

Callum had seen things all his life. There are monsters and beasts living among people, but he learned very early not to admit such things, not if he didn’t want people to think him crazy. It turns out that the supernatural is real, but at 30, Callum has no desire to be part of that secret. Not that he has a choice when it turns out he is a mage, albeit one that hasn’t cast any spells in all his life. There are requirements, duties, and education that the powers that be insist he be subject to. To hell with that.

Publisher's Summary
A superpowered colony falling to corruption. The fate of millions at stake.
Out on his own as a surveyor, Major Corbin sleeps under the stars and calls his own shots. As a one-man operation without powers on a space colony with power-abusing supers, this is the life.
Nothing lasts forever.
The chance discovery of a mysterious substance changes everything when he gains superpowers and learns that it’s the key to saving the colony from an evil that nobody but he knows is coming.
The kicker? Gaining powers means waking an ancient being that might be the difference between saving the universe or dying in the process.
If you love science fiction with the added awesomeness of superpowers, you’ll enjoy Supers: Rise Up.

The MC is a Mary Sue
Don't get me wrong, this book isn't bad by most technical standards, but there are some rather large and dealbreaking issues with the characters, in my opinion.
The book starts off strong, with an interesting new world that's explained at a easy to understand pace. The characters feel like people, the plot moves along at a good pace, and the dialog isn't just edited exposition dumps. I honestly enjoyed the first part of this book, as it has everything a good book should have. It event takes the old Meta/Super human idea and puts a simple if interesting new spin on it (fancy some space society with your superhero?). The thing is, the MC is a little too perfect. And by a little, I mean a lot.
I'll give the authors credit, its pretty subtle at first. The MC doesn't woo every woman he runs across, or beat every opponent with ease. Actually, the way those things play out is very well done. But the MC just, well, he just doesn't have any flaws. He's tall, handsome, super athletic, super kind, super confident, rich for his caste, knows how to fight, did really well in the army, is friends with a super hot upper-caste heiress, and is basically on good terms with everybody. When he sees injustice, he leaps out to stop it, no mater the cost to him. He's, well, a perfect hero. And in my option, disgustingly so.
The main reason I dislike how the MC is built, aside from a small inferiority complex, is that the dude has no flaws. I mean, absolutely ZERO flaws. To the point he almost doesn't have character. I mean, he isn't self conscious about his body, he doesn't get taken advantage of for his kindness, he didn't struggle really hard to get his dream job or his (relative) wealth, doesn't have any insecurities or mental issues as far as I can tell, not from his time in the military or from his time out in the wilds. The MC has no one close to him, no goals he's struggling to achieve, no past he's desperate to avenge, and, well, no motivations. None of his strengths are balanced out by complementary weaknesses, or even are the source of weaknesses (Good way to write a character btw. For an example, how someone who's really smart is socially inept, or someone who's really talented doesn't understand hard work). Instead He's just a perfect Mary Sue protagonist waiting to be caught up in the plot.
Wait, actually no! I take back my words! I've forgot something. The MC does have one flaw, one itty-bitty little thing wrong with him! Despite all of his amazing traits, he doesn't have any super powers! This means he can't be with his heiress girlfriend, and he has to deal with the oppression of those who do. Okay, so now we have a character who will have to struggle to overcome the very real qualitative difference between him and his oppressors. This could be interesting.
But WAIT. Guess what the very first plot point in the book is?? Take a wild guess? Take a wild, just out there guess?? He gets superpowers! What. A. Surprise! Well there goes all the depth he had right there. But wait, it gets better! Does he work really hard for them, earning them through sweat and blood and effort? No, he's chosen by some mysterious entity for his brains! The brains that he hasn't shown off at any point so far, other than just being generally better than other people. How convient for him! But wait, it gets EVEN BETTER! The MC doesn't get ordinary, run-of-the-mill superpowers. No, that would be too fair and balanced for our Mary Sue of a character. Our MC gets the Ultra Extra HD Pro version of superpowers! How fun!
Seriously, at this point I could see the story was turning into a bland, oppression-crushing power-trip of a fantasy, and I just couldn't enjoy it anymore. If that's your thing, then go right ahead, but I prefer MCs who feel like real people, who have human flaws and can grow and change into better people, shaped by their experiences. Tell me, where would this MC grow from where he is now? Does he become a god? He's already a master at every character skill there is except for superpowers, and that's the first thing they fix! The only thing they can do at this point really is to either devolve the character (which isn't fun for anyone), or to double-down and have a Beowulf-esque power-arc where nothing can stop him and he proves how good and righteous his ideals of friendship and love are by being awesome and beating up the evil, mean oppressors! (can you hear the sarcasm???)
Anyway, I just don't think I'll find it a fun read. Sure the starting plot and world-building are pretty damn good, but without a relatable and/or interesting main character to carry the story onward, there's really no point in caring. I thought I'd leave a warning for the rest of you readers, as well as some advice for the authors among you. The MC might get better later on, but I just don't have the willpower or patience to get to that point.
TL:DR: Good start with a solid world and strong MC. MC turns out to be too strong, though, and his only possible flaw is his lack of superpowers, which is fixed in the first arc. He's way too perfect and way too shallow, and is utterly unenjoyable to watch. He has so few flaws he starts to loose character, and this promises nothing but misery for the rest of the series. Also, I used a LOT of sarcasm and scorn in the review, so might be worth reading it just for that.

a little bit scifi space adventure, with a dash of Ironman, throw in a little bit of The Boys (comic/ TV series) and a great story with some brutal fights.
