Required Listening for Adult ADHD

Dr. Russell Barkley is a treasure. If you or a loved one has (or might have) adult ADHD, start here.

The content is current as of Fall 2021, research-based, factual, deeply compassionate, and practical.

Advice for ADHD parents of ADHD children: start with this book before researching ADHD in children. I wish I had. Managing your symptoms is a necessary prerequisite to effectively helping your child manage theirs. Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. :)

Narrator is good, and communicates the ideas effectively. 4 stars bc of a handful of errors missed by the narrator and QC. It’s a hard job, I know, and despite the errors, the narrator contributed to a lisyening experience that will no doubt have a profound effect on my ADHD life, my patient spouse’s, and my ADHD child’s, for which I am deeply grateful.

Finding out you have ADHD as an adult kinda sucks.

It's okay if you have to back the book up every 5 minutes because your brain wants to think about a million other things.

Basic review of ADHD

This book is best for individuals new to ADHD and those who need to short their understanding regarding the basic foundation and symptoms related to ADHD.

Definitely to elementary for clinicians unless the provider is uninitiated regarding this disorder.

For those with a solid understanding of ADHD there are still several valuable nuggets of information provided in this book but requires reading through the foundational material to find those nuggets.

Not Accurate

So disheartening to those of us with adhd who mask. If you are gifted, yes, you can mask and internalize your adhd.

very informative (and hurtful...err... helpful)

Beside the massive amount of information about how ADHD manifests in adults, I did like that the author made clear that medication is the most helpful tool.

I learned a lot about myself, or more so, that a lot is based on ADHD, and not me being lazy or stupid.

if you are (as me) somebody who was diagnosed rather late in life, listen to this. Grieve the possibilities we missed, and be amazed that there are still chances for us to succeed :)

A complete manual!

rely good content, super happy with the learnings I got here. Narration is good, very engaging. only the parts that talks about the data could be a little bit better executed, I don't know how, but it was a bit exhausting

Mostly good, but...

I'm middle aged and recently received a late diagnosis of ADHD -- something I kinda knew already, but thought I'd slipped through the net as a result of growing up in the 70s. Thankfully, the psychiatrist who picked up on it, told me my results were 'off the scale' and therefore fast-tracked me through the system and straight into treatment.

The book was helpful to the point of explaining the problem -- and there seriously is a problem -- but when it came to the section on working on solutions I found myself getting bored and losing focus -- and kinda giving up as I know my brain won't do any of these suggestions.

However, I wonder whether my response is typical, because I also have dyspraxia and they're currently querying autism, which could potentially make my diagnosis a little more complex than standard ADHD.

Boring and Blame filled

Very deficit based, dull and unhelpful. Listen to Driven To Distraction or ADHD 2.0 instead if you want up to date information and genuinely helpful advice.

Pretty good

I was hoping for more practical tips but this was quality content overall.

Some minor gripes:
-why would you read out a URL on an audiobook os beyond me, much better if they didn't.
-I understand that medication is important and very successful at managing adhd, but I can't get medicated by listening to an audiobook. So I didn't really appreciate the focus on listing all the different possible medications, chemical names and brands names. Was kind of like being read the safety info of a prescription.
