Story
Rotherweird is a twisted, arcane murder-mystery with shades of Deborah Harkness, Hope Mirrlees and Ben Aaronovitch, Mervyn Peake and Edward Gorey at their disturbing best. The town of Rotherweird stands alone - there are no guidebooks, despite the fascinating and diverse architectural styles cramming the narrow streets, the avant-garde science and offbeat customs. Cast adrift from the rest of England by Elizabeth I, Rotherweird's independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, but nobody, studies the town or its history.

Story
Punching well above their weight, Max and Markham set out to bring down a sinister organisation founded in the future—with a suspicious focus on the past. Max's focus is staying alive long enough to reunite with Leon and Matthew, alternately helped and hindered by St Mary's—who aren't always the blessing they like to think they are. But non-stop leaping around the timeline—from witnessing Magna Carta to disturbing a certain young man with a penchant for gunpowder—is beginning to take its toll. Is Max going mad? Or are the ghosts of the past finally catching up with her?

It's long been known that if a thing can go wrong, it will. With knobs on, usually. Disasters start to pile up. A new colleague with no respect for the past and a great deal to prove. Historians lost in time. And - worst of all - Rosie Lee on her very first jump. Then there's the small matter of Max's dishonourable discharge. From Tudor England to the Tower of Babel - it's all going horribly wrong. Jobless and homeless, Max receives an offer she can't refuse. Another time, another place. A refuge, perhaps. She's got that wrong, too.

the vanessa narrator is unbearable
The stories are mostly fun. But what really bugged ne was the terrible narrator for the Vanessa storx. Her accent is just hideous!! And don’t tell me it has to sound like that because it‘s set in Germany. I‘m German and I‘ll rather die than have that accent. She also mispronounces all the magical terms. Absolutely unbearable!!

Good Stories, Variable Narration
Hi
All would be well if Kobna had narrated it. However he just did a bit and it was mostly others. As such the voices were not the usual characterisations and I didn’t really feel at home.
Love you Ben. Stick with Kobna!

Saddened
I love the folly series and can’t wait for the next one to come out so was quite disappointed at this mish mash of regurgitated story lines... I felt that my credit was wasted and that the publishers are just trying to make more from less....

Disappointed. Great to learn more about the universe but in my opinion, Ben Aaronovitch needs to stick with the longer form.

Thoroughly enjoyed this
Probably not a good place to start if you've never read the main books, go start with book one and know that I'm jealous of your journey into the unknown. Rereading is never quite the same as those first steps.
These stories just add so much more to our knowledge and understanding. As I've listened I've gone back immediately and relistened again to be sure I'd got all the hints and nuances.
This won't be the last time I listen or read these, next time will be in chronological order, now that will be fun.

Lovely little collection of short stories
Read this a few months back when it came out as an ebook and really enjoyed it so reread the audio version. It's a nice collection of short stories and snippets from various books and more across the wider Rivers series. Some of these were previously only available in certain editions of the Rivers books so it was great to finally get them collected like this.
The audio version is particularly well done though thanks to the talented cast of narrators.

A book of two parts most definitely
The first part is the Peter Grant short stories and on the whole are very enjoyable the second part is the others and for me was tedium personified, if I want to listen educated ramblings I generally put on the news not purchase a book, the most annoying factor was the insist of the author to perform the introductions... ye gods man stop please! Stick to novels and don’t do voice work

A perfect short stories for a cup of tea
It was everything I wanted from a collection of short stories. Filled in some gaps from the main story arcs and was a nice little bite-sized goodness to wait for the next novel.

Not what I expected
For the cost at $14.95 ,this short books I purchased wasnt for me, sadly disappointing.
It was like reading Nursery Rhymes ,with no ending .
The rest of Bens books have ben more than Fantastic...., 100% Ben.
I just find short books annoying .
Bens past books had some great story lines with Kobna doing an awesome job with the narrations.
Come on Mr Aaronovitch, a lengthy book next time with some of the same characters (maybe introducing a few new characters ) ?
