Story
From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead - and keep it together - in New York City. It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club....

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best seller
In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood - along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again. In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).
In “What It Was Like, Part One”, Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later and what doing so has meant to her. Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”). Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this audiobook is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and - of course - talking as fast as you can.

As much as I love her and look to her as a mother figure, I didn't know her other than as her GG persona. But she's exactly as you would expect. She is the real life Gilmore girl. quick listen, but nothing special
I am a huge fan of Lauren Graham, so I enjoyed listening to her performance. I love the way that she talks and her personality is infused in the book. However the book is very disconnected. She starts with her childhood, goes into young adulthood, College, working dead-end jobs. She talks about the plays she did in high school and college, and all of her early acting. Then she discusses Gilmore Girls! However after talking about gilmoregirls she skips around going back into college going back to old jobs, Flash Forward to Parenthood. It was a little confusing.
Several times throughout the book she uses the same bits over and over and over again. Then she begins talking about her experience on Gilmore Girls a year in the life!!! This was also very fun to listen to. However as an audio book I think it was a little disconnected, and there are multiple pictures in the actual book that they do not provide when you purchase the audiobook. I definitely think it would be better if you spent $5 to get a used copy on Amazon.

Tearjerkingly Real
I am not one to give books or in this case audiobooks stunning reviews with every aspect earning 5 of 5 stars. I will not pretend I came upon this book by accident or because it was in my recommendations but entirely because I am both a Lauren Graham and Gilmore Girls fan. Although I am a fan, I was more focused on the stories she had to share and words she chose to write them with rather than the fact that this was a peek in to her life. I will be honest, I almost never read celebrity memoirs but this book made me feel a range of emotions, and the combination of Graham's written words and her voice reading it, made every line feel wonderfully genuine. It does not need to be compared and contrasted to other books because this is her unique story. She is very intelligent, and witty, and she sprinkled this book with many valuable pieces of advice that I believe anyone from eight to eighty years old could use. It was a pleasure to listen to and quite inspiring. The non linear story line also helps to emphasize the purpose of every chapter. I hope to one day be able to publish a book of my own and the advice from one of her mentors that she shares with us towards the end of her book has really stressed the importance of writing everyday and learning to make it less of a dreaded task and more so something necessary and enjoyable. Thank you Lauren for sharing these quirky anecdotes and invaluable peices of advice with us.

Gilmore Girls fan
I have to admit that I am a HUGE Gilmore Girls fan and have always loved Lauren Graham. I got the audible book to listen to while I was driving, and was often seen giggling and laughing in the car. My only issue with it was the fact that she kept referring to photo's which of course in an audible book you don't get to see.
I found that really irritating and it felt like I was robbed. Like I missed out on a lot by not seeing the photo's.
Sorry about that, otherwise I loved listening to Lauren Graham reflecting on her life. She really does sound exactly like Lorelei Gilmore and listening to her made me realise how well Gilmore Girls were written.

If you recently watched the Netflix Reboot of Gilmore Girls, then you will love this. I watched the 4 episodes and was left wanting more, and Lauren Graham's biography helped provide something a little extra. You got to hear her journey during the filming of the reboot and she gave you some great anecdotes of her life and the characters in it. And yes, she does talk fast but isn't that what you love about her and Gilmore Girls!

Enjoyable listen
I adored the Gilmore Girls tv series and any more time spent in stars hollow was a bonus. I liked the revival but not with the same enthusiasm as the original run. However, listening to Lauren Graham talk about her love and passion for the tv show is a wonderful companion piece.
When I rewatch the revival, I can look out for all the things she highlighted with a fresh viewpoint.
I liked parenthood a lot though have yet to finish the series.
This book is a must if you're a fan of Lauren Graham.

You've been Gilmored!
Loved, loved, loved this book! Lauren shows why she became the heart of such a fantastic show. As a single mother myself, the character of Lorelai was someone who spoke to me and she became my 'spirit animal' - of for no other reason than the fact she drank as much coffee as I do! It was wonderful to get to hear the story of the woman who brought this amazing character to life and to hear it in her own words and voice was truly special. Thank you, Lauren xoxo

Very disappointing in style and content
entertaining because it was read by the author in a style reminiscent of the character she played in Gilmore Girls, but it was very disappointing in style and content. It is a series of random observations without theme or insight. The whole thing has an ill considered hastily thrown together feel to it.

My daughter and I have watched the entire series many, many times, so I was really interested in Lauren's story. I'm really sad to say I couldn't finish this. I find her reading of this extremely annoying. I have listened for a good chunk and tried to go back to it a number of times, hoping it was just my mood, but now the thought of it just irritates me. I'd love to read the rest of the book but I just can't listen to another word. ", "type" : "Misc", "question" : "Any additional comments?", "id" : -1, "typeString" : "misc" } ]

Funny smart charming and sentimental
Do yourself a favour and listen. Fans of Gilmore girls will not be disappointed. It was like having Lorelai chatting to me while I mopped my kitchen and did the dishes. Heaven

It hurts me to say but I was disappointed by this
I preordered the audio version of this book because I was really looking forward to hearing Lauren Graham tell her own stories but sadly felt disappointed. Being a long time Gilmore fan and the fact that the book is billed as being "From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls and everything in between" I expected something far more in depth. It just felt like she tried to spread herself too thin covering topics from fashion, dieting, meeting her partner and of course Gilmore Girls but it all felt so skimmed. It's not that I'm not interested in these topics because I absolutely am but each chapter just felt like a little summary of her experiences rather than astute observations. I loved the anecdotes and wisdom she gained from her experiences but everything felt like it only cracked the surface. Even the story about when she met Alexis Bledel felt too brief considering the history they now share. Perhaps it's all because I was listening to the audio book instead of reading it myself but ultimately I just wanted more.

Quirky little read!
I can honestly say I loved this book. The perfect combination of humour, heart felt appreciation and story telling.
