Publisher's Summary

Instant New York Times Best Seller

From award-winning actor and food obsessive Stanley Tucci comes an intimate and charming memoir of life in and out of the kitchen.

Stanley Tucci grew up in an Italian American family that spent every night around the kitchen table. He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the savory recipes and into the compelling stories behind them.

Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about his growing up in Westchester, New York; preparing for and shooting the foodie films Big Night and Julie & Julia; falling in love over dinner; and teaming up with his wife to create meals for a multitude of children. Each morsel of this gastronomic journey through good times and bad, five-star meals and burned dishes, is as heartfelt and delicious as the last.

Written with Stanley’s signature wry humor, Taste is for fans of Bill Buford, Gabrielle Hamilton, and Ruth Reichl - and anyone who knows the power of a home-cooked meal.

Rebecca B

In truth, I am only into the 4th chapter, but as I am absolutely riveted by the story craft and incandescence of Mr. Tucci’s narration here ( THAT. Voice. YES). I just wanted to jump in and encourage audible listeners and readers alike to give this charming memoir an ear. Or a read. Warning: do not listen past the dinner hour. 😉

Recipe? In an audio book?

Stanley Tucci is one of the most entertaining narrators you will ever hear. And he is equally as articulate describing scenes from his life, much of those being culinary scenes. The reason I gave five stars for Performance and Story, but only four for Overall is, well, the recipes. Not that any of the recipes are bad recipes. I’m absolutely sure they are wonderful. In fact, I want them all. But it is really difficult to use the recipes in an audio book. You’d have to stop and write them down, requiring “rewinding” over and over until you’ve got the whole recipe. I only heard recipes in an audio book once before in a spy novel, which included many Russian recipes. Frankly, I was not interested in Russian cooking. But I’m entranced by Italian cuisine. And Tucci’s recipes sound incredible. So, after listening to this one, I will have to buy a hard copy of “Taste” by Stanley Tucci. And we are all happy Stan Tucci has recovers and healed after his brush with cancer.

Should include a pdf of recipes

I loved the book but it would be a much better experience with a pdf of the recipes. Without it, one has to buy the book. Not a great arrangement for the reader.

Pure delight

I have been waiting for the release of Taste ever since I discovered Mr. Tucci’s “Searching for Italy” series on CNN (you can now watch the first season on HBONow). I devoured that series and continue to watch it on repeat. Mr. Tucci’s love for food, shared experience, and just general love of life is apparent in the series and this book just feels like bonus material. If you loved that series, you will adore this book. If you haven’t seen the series, stop reading this and go watch it. Right now.

But back to the book, Mr. Tucci writes as he speaks, with effortless humor, an honest curiosity and a bit of mischief. I’ve just finished the audio version, wrapped the hardcover as a gift for my sister and ordered another hardcover for me. I am so excited to try the recipes he’s included which is why I need to own the hardcover (I wrapped mine for my sister).

It’s so nice to have the audiobook however because it feels like you’re sitting at an alfresco dinner with Mr. Tucci and he’s stirring his beloved paella and spinning tales of his childhood. It’s an evening, I would never want to end, but as he suggests, we’d need to stop at two Negronis.

And now for some pasta and a Martini!

Absolutely wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed this intimate look into Stanley Tucci‘s personal world. I found Stanley Tucci‘s narration important to the overall experience of this book. I desperately wanted to be invited to a dinner party at his house. Still, I am equally excited to have my own dinner party incorporating some of his wonderful recipes. It is clear that he lives a charmed life, but it doesn’t come without the hardships we all face; loss, illness, physical and emotional pain. He stresses that fame and fortune cannot replace the importance of family, tradition, and of course, excellent food— which I have to agree with.

I’m now in love with Stanley Tucci

Gorgeous food, gorgeously depicted, fascinating stories shared generously, wrapped up in the smooth as scotch tones of Stanley Tucci’s rich voice. His writing is beautiful and unabashedly descriptive, his life’s experiences are wide and varied, and his performance is intimate, funny, irreverent, warm and inviting. It’s a sexy book written and performed by an elegant man whose passion and joi de vivre jump off the page and into your imagination. Excellent listen. Will do so again for certain. Five stars

Wanted this book to go in forever.

I had watched with adoration Stanley’s series on Italy and cannot wait until he returns and films more. I just learned recently about this book and eagerly purchased it and just completed it. As a fellow foodie and of Greek heritage (so can understand the importance of a close family also, surrounded by food customs including guilt, traditional recipes and love), I clung to his every word shaking my head up and down and picturing my own grandparents and parents speaking to me at the table in my younger years. I hope Stanley continues to compose many other books and series about food and I thank him for who he is and the gifts he continues to share with us. Gracci!
