Publisher's Summary

When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains plants and then become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of toxic substances. Teaming with Microbes offers an alternative to this vicious circle and details how to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web. You’ll discover that healthy soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

This must-have guide is for everyone, from those devoted to organic gardening techniques to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy plants without resorting to chemicals.

Poor delivery

Narration is poor; there doesn’t seem to have been any quality control at all.

First off, the narrator has a pleasing voice but his constant mispronunciation of words drove me crazy. He sometimes even changes pronunciation halfway through a sentence (pronouncing “aeration” as both “air-ee-ay-shun” then “air-ay-shun”). More maddening are (1) there’s a line missing from Chapter 3 (if I remember correctly) of the audiobook so there are two sentences you won’t be able to make sense of, and (2) the narrator doesn’t know (and didn’t bother finding out) that “spp.” is an abbreviation for “species” so he treats it like an acronym and says “S. P. P.” each of the dozens of times it comes up.

The content is important and the book itself is pretty good although grammar sometimes makes ideas unclear, sometimes incorrect words are used (“soil texture” when they meant “soil structure”), and the authors’ high-labor approach (multiple applications every year infinitely into the future) is opposed to their mentor - Dr. Elaine Ingham’s - approach. Reintroducing the biology and correcting management should resolve things, not create never-ending work.

It also seems unconscionable to try to refocus the conversation on soil biology and not spend a chapter about buying a $100-300 microscope and how to use it to - at least - be able to figure out the balance of fungi and bacteria in your soil / compost.

A worthy read not worth listening to

The book itself is jam packed with information in a somewhat accessible manner. This audio comes across as extremely uninspiring and dry. If I had not already read this, I wouldn't want to after listening. The author has several other titles worth reading as well.
Get the book, skip the audio.
If you are set on listening to the subject manner in this book I highly recommend "The Hidden Half of Nature."

Great read, even better listen.

I really happy this book made it to audible. I don’t have the time to read as much as I would like so this helps a lot ! Now hurry up and add your other books to Audible so I can absorb all the informational nutrition. Thank you Mr. Lowenfels and everyone involved in creating this audio book. 🙏💚

Helpful

Beneficial, and regarding the narrators mistakes on certain words, it’s really not a big deal and should be easy to look past. The book within itself is an enormous help and is full of great information. So much so that I actually bought a hardcopy to have along with the audiobook. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to take care of a farm, garden or even just the landscape surrounding your home.

A great beginner’s guide. The Soil Food Web is the future and this book…

…is the first book I have encountered that distills the science down into easily manageable chunks for the lay Gardener.

Fascinating for an amateur naturalist.

This book has inspired me to obtain a small microscope for myself and investigate my soil’s health by surveying the microlife!

The narrator is about 4 or 5/10 on the annoying scale. Could be much worse.

Good book. Terrible narrator

This book is fantastic. The information conveyed is extremely important. The narrator is the single worst narrator I've ever heard. His delivery conveys that he doesn't garden, or if he does, he has no idea what he's doing or talking about. He constantly mispronounces words, delivers sentences awkwardly, and generally does a bad job. PLEASE GET ANOTHER READER AND RE RELEASE THIS BOOK.

Needs re-recording

The audio on this is terrible, currently on chapter 4 and there's just too much high tone at the end of each word, not sure I can finish as really difficult to listen to, going to buy the book instead. Real shame as the info so far is great.

Buy the book instead

I gave up on this not because of dull content, but because the narration was painful. Do try the sample before buying. I've claimed a refund and will buy the paper version instead.

The authors really know their stuff

Full of information and easy to remember rules to charge into regenerative gardening or ideas to expand regenerative agriculture.

I thought the book was informative and definitely in-depth and improved my understanding considerably.
The narrator was ok but lack of pictures, tables and lists (obviously available in the book) made some elements difficult

Robotic narration

The narrator sounds like a robot. Expression is extremely awkward. It's very distracting to an otherwise great book.

Incredible content

The narration of this audiobook is, although clear, also a bit clumsy and there is some mispronunciation at times. Apart from that, this audiobook is a MUST. Jeff and Wayne explain the soil food web in great depth whilst still managing to be engaging and interesting in the way they present the information. A brilliant book and one that I’ll read or listen to over and over again!

A must read for growers and gardeners

If you're growing using an organic approach, this is a must read. Jeff approaches the topic from a scientific perspective and knows a lot about the soil food web. No BS straight forward read. Will definately read again and will recommend.
