Publisher's Summary

It all happened so quickly. First, animals became infected with the virus and their meat became poisonous. Then, governments initiated the Transition. Now, 'special meat' - human meat - is legal.

Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans, only no one calls them that. He works with numbers, consignments, processing. One day, he's given a gift to seal a deal: a specimen of the finest quality. He leaves her in his barn, tied up, a problem to be disposed of later.

But the specimen haunts Marcos. Her trembling body, her eyes that watch him, that seem to understand. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost - and what might still be saved...

Shocking, brutal and fantastic writing

I binge listened to this novel in two days. I don't want to spoil things so all I will say is I found it dark, gory and frightening as it shines a mirror on humans and the awful things we do to "livestock".

The pacing is superb. It left me with a feeling of horror and of the ground crumbling beneath me.

Brilliant, and relentlessly grim

Urggh, an exquisitely well constructed 'horror' in the truest sense, exploration of the absolute darkest recesses of humanity imaginable. A reflection on fascism, colonialism, slavery, and of course, the depraved every-day violence of a meat based diet (not a vegetarian saying this either- so I felt the book pointing a well justified finger right in my face...). Brilliantly performed, but relentlessly grim in the most effective, and justifiable way.

wow

the most thought provoking book I have ever listened to/read. there's little that disturbs me but this book did and that takes some going. such a deep story when you compare every part of it to the slaughter of our beautiful animals. thank you for an amazing book

A beautiful written horrific story

The story is quite slow paced but is incredibly thought provoking. For such a bleak and horrific tale, it is surprisingly compelling. All the time while listening I was wondering what on earth the conclusion of this nightmare could leave us with, but I think the ending was even more effective than I could have imagined and crushed all the hope I had for humanity.

Gripping and terrifying

Loved it and couldn't stop listening to it. It all seems so plausible that it borders on terrifying

completely unearned

there was so little explanation for how thing got to that point, the writer just wanted to shock with their disgusting imagery but they did not earn it, a random word generator would have provided a better explanation, I've never written a review before but I have to now, do not waste your time with this trash

Not an easy ride

A short (ish) story but I could only listen in small doses. Very atmospheric and stifling. Will definitely need to listen to something lighter next. Great performance.

Not for me

For me the Narrator didn’t work. Unfortunately the story didn’t grab my attention at all at the beginning so I only listened to 3 chapters.

Makes 'The Road' read like Wind in the Willows

Gruesome, relentless and horribly believable. Characters have an awful depth. The narrator is excellent. Not for the faint hearted.

Disturbingly good.

Trigger warnings for animal abuse & rape.

Marcos works in one of the processing plants & his good at his job, but he is also dealing with the death of his son, breakdown of his marriage, his fathers ailing health & now a 'head' (woman) has been gifted to him. The story tells how humans are now farmed for meat & the legalities of the process. But the woman gifted to Marcos is now a problem.

This book is disturbing from beginning right up until the very last moment. Is told very well & made me cringe quiet a few times in all the right ways. Stuck with me after I had finished.

Definitely an interesting concept

I enjoyed how uncomfortable the story made me feel and it’s certainly food for thought! Wasn’t a fan of the ending as it was predictable.

Stunned silent

WTF. Very fast paced book which kept me off balance for the whole book. This is the first book that I have been stunned silent in an ending

Different

This is definitely different to anything I've ever read before.
If you are at all squeemish it probably isn't for you.
The only thing I disliked was initially I did struggle knowing which character the narrator was talking about due to the rapid third person.

Definitely interesting

Would definitely say this is a must read. It’s very interesting and fascinating. Nowhere near as graphic or traumatising as other reviews make it seem.
Ending wasn’t the best would love to see this book made into a movie or series.

unnecessary and mean spirited gore fest

I'm a big horror fan but this was a bit too extreme. Very bleak and as a dog lover I didn't like certain parts that I feel were done for shock value and in poor taste
