Publisher's Summary

He’s fallen for a woman…

Anxious to meet her soon-to-be-husband, Dallas Leigh for the first time, mail-order bride Amelia Carson is en route to Fort Worth, Texas. When she steps off the train and locks eyes with her betrothed, she immediately feels drawn to him. But the cowboy standing before her isn’t Dallas. Instead, Dallas’ brother Houston has been sent to accompany her on the three-week journey to the ranch where she’ll begin her new life.

Who belongs to another...

The war Houston Leigh fought has left him with visible scars, a daily reminder of his cowardice on the battlefield. Denying his intense attraction to Amelia, he is determined to deliver her untouched, as promised. But during their long dangerous trip, he can’t help but admire her inner strength and fearlessness. And when she looks at him - as if she can see beyond his scarred face and read his innermost thoughts - he loses his heart to her. Now as they near the ranch, Houston must choose to remain loyal to his brother - or find the courage to fight for the woman he’s convinced is his destiny...

Better late than never!

I really loved this tale and was surprised to learn it was written in the 1990’s. I hope Audible is already working on the next two installments in the series. It had everything on my credit worthy must have list:
1) Strong but still vulnerable and determined heroine - check
2) A damaged hero who is all the more attractive because of it - check
3) Brothers, ranches, and travel by horseback - check, check, check
4) Mail order bride - check
5) Forbidden love - check
6) Talented narrator - BIG check
7) A bit of steam - check
It’s only missing two things ... sequels 2 and 3!

Loved it

A sweet almost clean romance with lots of buildup. Great narration as well. Left me wanting to continue the series immediately.

Absolutely loved this book

I was there through every moment of this book and really enjoyed the story, the narration of it, it was perfect. A pleasure to listen to and experienced all the feels! I hope Dallas finds what he's looking for! Beautiful story! I don't ever write book reviews.

👎🏼 Couldn’t get into it.

Sometimes the reviews are almost a hindrance. I had such high expectations because of all the raving reviews but I was bored out of my gosh darn gourd! I tried. I really really tried. Not worth it. It was probably so boring because it was so slow. Well, except how the brother was a curmudgeon kind of guy who acted like he hated her and then in almost the next sentence was wanting her desperately. Whhaaaa!? Where did that come from!?

I’m so sorry to be in the minority on this one but I felt the reviews needed some balance.

I got this in a 2 for 1 sale and I totally feel ripped off. I’m returning ut and taking the loss.

Forbidden love is my weakness

I really enjoyed this book. I usually read books with a little more spice but the story was so entertaining I didn’t mind

Wonderful Love Story

There does need to be a trigger warning for sexual assault. It's less than a paragraph but it's still enough to bring up old traumas.

The rest of the story is very well written and wonderfully narrated.

Lived up to my expectations

Very sweet. Rough, gruff men with hidden depths. Yet another book that you *really* can't judge by the horrible cover.

The narration was so mediocre. Quite bland with the same inflection on nearly every sentence.

Just Lovely

First book in a long while that drew me in. First book in a long while wherein the main man isn’t a rogue heartthrob. It’s very good paced maybe until the last 5% but other than that truly enjoyed it. SPOILERS: half of Houston’s face was blown off during the civil war as a teenager. He’s withdrawn from the world. Older handsome brother Dallas sends him to pick up his mail order bride at the train depot. Their 3 weeks journey turns into a 5 week journey where they face the elements (danger) and they fall in love. They both basically know it but Houston won’t let her chain herself to him so to speak. He thinks she deserves someone as amazing as his older brother. She does marry Dallas but they don’t consummate them marriage bc she’s kidnapped. Dallas at this point has realized H and A are in love. D and H get A back. H and A marry. Heartwarming story.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

I was almost deterred from listening to this book by one of the reviews, but I’m glad I decided to judge for myself. I’ve always liked Lorraine Heath and was intrigued by the Texas trilogy angle and the story line. I was not disappointed. This book captivated me from beginning to end. Unlike the other reviewer, who I must respectfully disagree with, I totally understood the characters motivations and decisions based on the masterful way Ms. Heath builds the story and the characters. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and am eager to listen to the next in the series!

Enjoyable.

Before buying; I read a review on the last book in the series, about it being a good story with farcical plots. I agree with this, not being an American and guessing a "Duster", is some sort of coat. I was amazed when I predicted the snake and type, too much David Attenborough. The debacle at the river had me baffled, as if you live so far away from everything, surely you would be very precious with your belongings. However; this was resolved when they went off after wild horses, can't do that with wagons.
I knew from the beginning that delay was inevitable, even though they seemed to have been on his brother's land for sometime.
The characters were also a bit unbelievable and manged to tangle themselves into some ridiculous situations. Though predictable, it was light weight and humerous, very easy to listen to when busy.
