Publisher's Summary

From the author of My Oxford Year, Julia Whelan’s uplifting novel tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator—who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident—and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel.

For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She’s found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last-minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger.

On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world’s most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last book—with Brock McNight, the industry’s hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn’t buy what romance novels are selling—not after her own dreams were tragically cut short—and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, makes her decision for her.

As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more.

If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.

Editorial Review

The art of witty banter
I’ve spent many a summer day listening to the extraordinary Julia Whelan, who’s narrated some of my all-time favorite stories, but this one is extra special. Written and performed by Whelan, Thank You for Listening is a witty, fun rom-com that embraces fans and skeptics of the romance genre alike. It’s super smart without taking itself too seriously, telling the story of Sewanee Chester, a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator—who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident—and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel. It’ll leave you blushing with a perma-smile on your face. — Tricia F.

Julia Whelan is the GOAT

I started listening to audiobooks 2.5 years ago and quickly learned that almost all of my favorites had one thing in common - they were narrated by Julia Whelan.

When I discovered she had written a book - My Oxford Year - I absolutely had to listen to it, and I was not disappointed! It was such a wonderful story of love and loss. I loved that it wasn’t super romcom-y all perfectly tied up with HEA and felt more real. Then I saw she had a second book available for preorder so I snatched that up and as soon as it landed in my library yesterday I started listening and barely stopped.

From the get go I was laughing out loud, literally, at things I think all audiobook listeners have noticed. From trying to figure out how pupils could possibly throb, to desperately begging people to pronounce mischievous correctly, to hoping and praying that your headphones are, in fact, connected to your phone (my catastrophic error has happened at home with our Bluetooth speaker lightbulb in our living room. WHY haven’t I disconnected it yet??).

All the relationships were wonderfully written and portrayed. I really liked the smattering of spice and loved the tension.

I loved that while it was a love story it was also about so much more than just their relationship.

Truly a 5⭐️ read all around. Thank you so much for a beautiful listen!!

A Lovely Diversion

Julia Whelan has written another utterly enjoyable novel and her performance as narrator is amazing.

It is fun to read a novel where the author uses every romance novel trope she can weave into the story without it falling apart. her author's note at the end illuminates her thought process and it's very interesting.

Congratulations on a successful Sophomore novel! I'm looking forward to more.

Excellent!

Talented writer AND narrator! I listened to the whole book in one day, putting everything else on hold. I was prepared to be disappointed, did not believe it would be better than My Oxford Year. It is just as good. More please!

Disappointed

Julia Whelan is my favorite narrator. She can make even trash sound interesting, but this book is just not good. I’m bummed to not give it 5 stars and confused by all the good reviews. I just could not get into it and the names were SO ANNOYING. “Blah” for the grandma? And the long A name…come on?!? Trying too hard. Skip this one

Brilliant

Julia Whelan has always been my favorite narrator and I was so excited when I saw that she was coming out with another book. This story captivated me from the beginning and held me until the very last word. The note from Julia at the end was superb and made the story even more wonderful.

Treat yourself and listen to this book!!

I wish that I were a wordsmith, who could write the perfect review that no one would pass by this book. It is perfect for the audible book lover. Julia’s humor and layers to these characters is wonderful! Her narration is done so well, one forgets it has a singular narrator. I have no doubt this is a book that will remain in my favorites folder, being listened to many times. I can not wait for another of your books, Julia.

Disappointed

This is a romance book about a narrator who does not want to narrate romance books. Julia Whelan is a good narrator. I hope to listen to her reading other’s books.

Romance lovers, audio book lovers, Julia Whelan lovers, book lovers; do yourself a favour and pick this one up. Absolutely loved this. It was funny, sweet, had me grinning stupidly and laughing out loud so many times and also made sure we had our thoughtful moments too. I’d listen to Julia read the phone book

Not one for romance - more a hard news, crime and thriller guy, but this was a lovely and engaging story and I’m so happy that Julia is as great a writer as she is a narrator.

Thank You for Narrating

This is Taylor Jenkins Reid meets Emily Henry, with a little Addie LaRue philosophy thrown in. It's just wonderful. It was really funny, the banter witty, but the characters felt real. Despite having an American accent, Julia Whelan is my favourite narrator, she brings the stories to life so masterfully and allows you to escape into another life for a while; I'm so glad she's now decided to write her own books, she's a terrific writer.

A million star rating

This is my new favourite title and I only wish I could listen to it for the first time all over again.
The story is both plausible and whimsical, the characters are relatable and likeable, and the narration is absolutely on point. Julia Whelan is so masterful at managing the separation of character voices that, on reflection, it's easy to forget that this is a one-woman show.
She is a bit of a legend.
Please do yourself a favour and get into this book asap!

Julia Whelan is the master jack of all trades!

I loved Whelan's debut book and this follow up did not disappoint. This woman is so insanely talented. As a narrator, she takes on every single character with great gusto and gives them individuality and personality. As an immensely clever writer, she manages to turn a rom-com full of every single romance trope into a most original and wildly entertaining story, simultaneously a satire about and a homage to the romance genre. How can anyone fail to love this story featuring audiobook narrators written with such wit and charm by the reigning queen of narration herself?

Listening to Whelan expertly bringing to life her wonderfully rendered characters, I alternately teared up and hooted with laughter throughout the book. There are so much raw emotions and a wagyu-grade meaty backstory explaining Sewanee's lack of confidence and unwillingness to believe in HEAs. Her eye patch hid more than the visible scars for while her face was disfigured by the accident, her dreams and ambitions and were pulverised when her promising acting career was cut so brutally short.

The enigmatic Brock McKnight aka Irish charmer with the baritone voice capable of turning women listeners to jelly, not the firm jelly, but the sloppy, melted kind. Irish! Need I say more?!! The bantering is first-grade, the emails sublime, the texts transcended even that.

The cast of secondary characters is just dynamite. The star actress bestie, the flamboyant nan and her irrepressible friends at the aged care home, other friends and relatives - each are so vividly portrayed and so are the relationships Sewanee had with these. The story is complicated and layered and goes beyond just boy meets girl, although the boy meets girl part was done deliciously well, so much so that Whelan gave us a second boy meets girl scene to savour and gush over. The very accurate and moving depiction of the slow absorption of a brilliant personality into the haze of cognitive decline is inspired by Whelan's personal brush with dementia. In fact as Whelan is at pains to point out in the enlightening author's end notes, though much of the storyline was inspired by various experiences she has had in Hollywood and in the world of narration and romance literacy, none were actually based on real life characters. Like this book, real life brings with it its share of laughter, heartbreak and unpredictability, but surely real life can never be consistently this much fun and exhilarating for 11 hours straight!

Could not stop listening!

This! Ugh seriously is one of the best audiobooks I’ve listen to all year! I’m just in love with how Julia Whelan writes.
To have me going from laughing out loud at the gym to crying on the train.

I started and finished this book in less than 24 hours and I am jealous of people that have the pleasure of reading it for the first time. Another fantastic read from Julia!
