From the voice of a generation: the most highly anticipated autobiography of the year, and the story of a man who wanted The Who to be called The Hair; wanted to be a sculptor, a journalist, a dancer and a graphic designer; became a musician, composer, librettist, fiction writer, literary editor, sailor; drank too much and nearly died; detached from his body in an airplane, on LSD, and nearly died; planned to write his memoir when he was 21; and published this book at 67.

It is an unequivocal fact that in terms of rock bands, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who represent Year Zero; the beginning of all things, ground-breakers all. To that incontrovertible end, John Entwistle - The Who's beloved bassist - remains an enigmatic yet undeniably influential figure. However, unlike his fellow musicians, Entwistle has yet to be the subject of a major biography. In the years since his death, his enduring legacy has been carefully guarded by his loved ones, preventing potential biographers from writing the definitive account of his life - until now.

Even more impressive, Johns was perhaps the only person on a given day in the studio who was entirely sober, and so he is one of the most reliable and clear-eyed insiders to tell these stories today.

"Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned"...So say the publishers about this audiobook I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii, and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold.

Publisher's Summary
In this audiobook, the frontman of one of the greatest bands of all time tells the story of his rise from nothing to rock 'n' roll megastar, and his wild journey as the voice of The Who.
“It’s taken me three years to unpack the events of my life, to remember who did what when and why, to separate the myths from the reality, to unravel what really happened at the Holiday Inn on Keith Moon’s 21st birthday,” says Roger Daltrey, the powerhouse vocalist of The Who.
The result of this introspection is a remarkable memoir, instantly captivating, funny and frank, chock-full of well-earned wisdom and one-of-kind anecdotes from a raucous life that spans a tumultuous time of change in Britain and America. Born during the air bombing of London in 1944, Daltrey fought his way (literally) through school and poverty and began to assemble the band that would become The Who while working at a sheet metal factory in 1961.
In Daltrey’s voice, the familiar stories - how they got into smashing up their kit, the infighting, Keith Moon’s antics - take on a new, intimate life. Also here is the creative journey through the unforgettable hits including "My Generation", "Substitute", and "Pinball Wizard" and the great albums Who’s Next, Tommy, and Quadrophenia.
Amidst all the music and mayhem, the drugs, the premature deaths, the ruined hotel rooms, Roger is our perfect narrator, remaining sober (relatively) and observant and determined to make The Who bigger and bigger. Not only his personal story, this is the definitive biography of The Who.
Critic Reviews
"The Who's lead singer and frontman does a remarkable job narrating his candid, honest, self-deprecating, and carefully researched memoir." (AudioFile Magazine)

Wonderful storytelling
First a confession: I have been a The Who fan since I first heard them in the late 70s, so maybe I am slightly biased. Yet I have listened to more audiobooks I care to count andI think I can tell a good one from a bad one, and this one is great!
Why? Three reasons: The stories, the writing, and the performance.
The book covers pretty much what one would expect, i.e. the life of Roger Daltry including of course the story of The Who though Mr. Daltry's eyes. Compared to Pete Townshend autobiography 'Who am I: A Memoire', this one, however, feels more personal.Where Townshend spends much time on the creative process and the creation of their music, Daltrey gives a more detailed look at the people in adn around The Who and their interactions. Another difference is the inherent humor of Roger Daltrey's stories, compared to which Townsends feels dry and more academic. Told from the distance of history it seems Roger Daltrey finds - if not humor- at least understanding of events that probably were rather taxing when they occurred. Besides the good writing, the great entertainment value arises equaly from Roger's delivery. No wonder he was the frontman. He is just very good in bringing the stories to life, with his intonations, dynamic, pausing, giggling and several other tools that make this less of a reading than a real performance. It all reminds me of the reading of Peter Falk to his nephew that frames "The Princess Bride". It almost doesn't matter if you are a The Who fan or not, this is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining audiobooks you can listen to.

Fantastic story of a fantastic life
Who fans will definitely love this book but as a life story read my the author it is fantastic and often touching story. Roger Daltrey comes across as an extremely likeable and level headed character who has always looked after the people who helped in his rise to fame. One of the best Rock and Roll autobiographies. Set in the long gone era where drug fuelled hotel smashing riots were par for the course Daltrey narrates as the voice of reason clearly having fun retelling the escapades of the band. One of the best Audible books that I have listened to.

Enjoyable Story by an Engaging Author
Roger Daltrey's narration makes this an enjoyable and engaging listen. A WHO fan but not a fanatic, I wanted to get a sense of the band's internal dynamics that lay behind their powerful, driving music. Roger delivers this with a degree of personal insight and affable personality that makes the story compelling, funny and occasionally frightening as boundaries of acceptable human behavior and personal safety often seemed an afterthought to these hard rock highwaymen.
Roger comes across as honest, self critical, humorous and a very enjoyable human being. He's also the most level headed of the group which almost sinks him a couple of times. I also listened to Townsend's autobio and was amazed how absolutely no one recognized Keith Moon's self-destructive (and generally destructive!) behavior was bound to end in somebody's death at some time. At least Roger addresses this with some regret and deeper probing, Pete basically accepts it as 'rock band bad boy' behavior. I like Townsend and respect his innovation but Roger provides greater insight and common sense that simply feels more salient and how most folks would react to the Moon's edge-of-the-cliff lifestyle and over-the top-drug abuse which was enabled and fueled by Entwistle. This 'behavior' actually sabotaged the band's real potential. Particularly sad as Moon's talent was so incredibly creative and powerful. .
Roger's narration makes the band's story come alive and he follows a natural flow of the its evolution as well as his own. More peripheral but influential characters are fairly described as Townsend confirms in his depictions. I recommend this book with enthusiasm. After you're done you'll like Daltrey as a person you'd love to hang out with and you will better understand and appreciate how bleeping crazy and outRAGEous it was to be on the soaring comet that was The Who. Check out Townsend's book as well.

Thanks So Much More, Cmdr. Daltrey!
I’ve followed The Who and Roger Daltrey since they first hit the airwaves in Detroit, MI in 1964.
That being said, this is not another Rock Band / Rockstar Tale of Escapades. This book details a pivotal epoch in rock and roll history, and continuing to this day. Moreover, it spins the intricate web of events which molded one of the greatest lead singers of M-m-m-my G-g-generation, including stories of growing up post-World War II Britan. There are intenste parts, yet there were moments I was laughing out loud. I learned things I never knew about this man and his bands, and I know a LOT.
Being read by the author, Roger Daltrey, CBE, is the icing on the cake, er, book. His easy, charming and affable nature shows through for miles and miles with these stories being related as if they transpired mere days ago...and you are sitting across from him in the room. The interspersed laughter at the thought of a humorous jaunt with band members, and snippets of lyrics being sung are beyond endearing.
It’s a completely enjoyable read.

Loved the book and really enjoyed having Roger Daltrey do his own narration. Many interesting stories of his growing up in Post WW II England and his growing love of music. The multiple stories of the Who as a band, as well as accounts about the band mates was very compelling reading. A must read book for any Who or Rock and Roll afficianado.
