Story
From the moment Dara of Westwood spied the Silver Headed Raptor nesting in Rundeval Peak, the precocious redheaded 12-year-old girl was enchanted. The youngest daughter of the Master of the Wood lived in ramshackle Westwood Hall, in the independently minded Westwood estate of Sevendor. Her determination to capture a baby falcon and train it wasn’t hampered by the fact that Dara had never climbed a mountain, had never been trained in falconry, or even remotely had permission from her father to do it.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

The Wizard's Council of Tarador was supposed to tell young Koren Bladewell that he is a wizard. They were supposed to tell everyone that he is not a jinx, that all the bad things that happen around him are because he can't control the power inside him, power he doesn't know about. The people of his village, even his parents, are afraid of him, afraid he is cursed. That he is a dangerous, evil jinx.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Publisher's Summary
The Spellmonger in exile!
When Minalan the Spellmonger was exiled from his beloved mageland of Sevendor by Prince Tavard, his friend Duke Anguin made him Count Palatine of the Magelaw, a vast realm in the Alshari Wilderlands that Minalan is all too familiar with. After the goblin invasion, the province is devastated, ruined, and peopled almost only by freed slaves. But Minalan has brought his recovering wife and family into exile with him, and he views their impoverished fief as an opportunity to build a new City of Magi in the wilderness.
To assist, he recruits some of his closest friends among the High Magi: Mavone, the military intelligence specialist; Sandoval, the Marshal in charge of recruiting Minalan’s army; Carmella, whose genius for defensive magics will be key; Gareth, whose ambition to create knows no bounds; and Terleman, perhaps the greatest tactical warmage of his time.
Together, Minalan knows that they can build his new city, Vanador, into an anvil that can blunt the thrust of the dark forces that rise against them. For the first of three Nemovorti have come to the Penumbra, and Gaja Katar has vowed to wipe humanity from the face of the world. Yet he is far from the worst of Minalan’s worries. For the powerful Sea Folk have sent an emissary to see the Spellmonger, and the news he bears will change the fate of all.
Minalan’s only hope is to rely on his cunning, and his ability as a Thaumaturge!

What happened in this book?
There are about fifty plot threads going on in the series. If you're hoping for any of them to be resolved, you're out of luck. Hardly any progress is even made on any of them.
We do get an 8 hour description of how Vanador is built. And how their legal system is set up. And how their currency is set up... Seriously, you may as well skip to the first interlude.
Considering the next book is likely to be focused around concurrent Penny or Rondal/Tyndal storylines I doubt we'll get much progress for at least one book.
Here's what happened (obviously spoilers): A random irrelevant badguy attacks Valador and fails miserably. Also his kids from Isily move in with Minalan and Ruderal talks with his dad.
We don't learn anything about the AI. Minalan has two short conversations with him and learns nothing.
We don't learn anything important about the Vundal.
Minalan predictably gets an extension on giving up all the snow stone. He has to give up another mountain but it doesn't happen in this book and he's getting random irrelevant coral in trade.
Alya doesn't change much. She's starting to be influenced by the Handmaiden in some way related to the Vundal. I'm betting she ends of being changed into one of the Celestial mothers by the Handmaiden and saves the day. Didn't happen in this book though.
The prince is still salty about his son dying. But he isn't doing anything besides gathering people around him who don't like magic. He's mentioned so rarely I can't even remember his name.
Anguin gets married to Princess Rardine. The wedding gets attacked the same way the capital was attacked and irrelevant people die. No dragons during the attack this time.
Minalan starts provoking some random Noble dude. It isn't explained why, and nothing comes of it in this book.
That's about it. Really, it's an irrelevant book. I'm not looking forward to the next one because whatever the other characters are doing isn't going to move the plot forward or answer any questions.

Tons of Description - But Plot Important
This isn't my favorite book in the series. So much of the early book is 'the story of Vanador ' - a very descriptive setup of the new city (not to say that these books have ever been shy on description and world building). But I do feel that the first third of the book drags, with miscellaneous interesting events happening in the latter part.
And yet I think this is an important book for fans of the series - we have here what's described as the first book in what could be a ten book arc. There are major events, and the start (or escalation) of several story arcs to come (Farise, The Forsaken, Forseti, the arsenal, the Formless, etc)
Enjoy it for what it is. It's good, and starts the promise of what's next.
As always, it's pleasant listening to John Lee and how he narrates the series. i DID notice a few places where there were errors (name swapping / incorrect name), and pronunciation goofs, hence I've docked it to 4 stars.

Not much here...
A lot of exhaustive descriptions of courts, tax systems, interactions of magics etc. Not much is happening (I made it through 2/3 of this book so far and I am not sure I'll get to the finish).Stalled action,a few conversations ,one joust, another visit from the Sea folk demanding more white stone ....about all. Clearly, the author run out of ideas and now decided to bore his audience to death with his lists of tedium.

This series is getting really repetitive
I feel like this story is being dragged out forever because the author knows it is a cash machine and all of us are willing to fork out more money hoping the book will be more stimulating than the last, but unfortunately we are wrong. This is like a TV show that has gone on too long.

A rehash of previous plots in the series
There is nothing new here. The book covers the same plots already done in the earlier books. I love my wife, I hire really good people and get out of their way, I feel guilty for not saving everyone, did I say that I love my wife, I hire really good people and throw money at then, I care about everyone, oh how I love my wife, my really good people saved everyone and I didn't have to do anything but stay out of their way and throw money at them.
There was nothing creative in this book, it is just a pulling of similar stories from earlier books and with a little rewrite presented as a new book that barely mores the story forward. In other words, it is a filler book, no new development of any type, so boring to the extreme.

Terry. You always get my money, but please..
So many errors, which honestly is kind of normal. I wish production would just correct the obvious things like Tyndal and Rondal. But.. This was so borring. And almost as flat in tone as the hawkmaiden books. This is less of a story and more a catalog of dry events. Just. So bleh. =(

Running out of ideas?
I’m a huge fan of this series, but it seems like Terry’s running out of ideas. The vast majority of this book is a missive on public planning with very little action. It sets up three huge battles, but only one is portrayed here, and it’s a snoozer. If you skip this one you won’t miss much. Here’s hoping the next book will have more of the excitement, plot twists, and intrigue I’ve come to expect from this series.

Way too slow
Clear clearly the author wants to drag this story out for 20 books. Very disappointing. way too much detail regarding city building and not enough action. Felt like I was listening to someone play a video game. When I first started reading the series I was enthralled, but I doubt I will continue. The best part is The Narrator, Mr. Lee who has a wonderful voice.

Another great addition of the Spellmonger
I was a bit worried by z few of the negative reviews I read before beginning Thaumaturge but I am very happy to report my worries were unfounded and I believe the negative reviews to be unfair and misleading.
There is a lot of world building in this book which if I had read it may have been hard going but as a listener it was great to hear the building of the kingdom and the story of the city unfold. The book builds on great characters, introduces new ones and has enough intrigue, humour and battles to keep you interested if the building of one of the best realised fantasy cities isnt enough. I listened to the last half of this book while completing a long drive through Europe and it kept me going. I can't wait for the next book.

Always good to get back to calidor but this one is a bit of a slow burn, especially following the fast pace of Necromacer, this book's predecessor.

Great series, but just filler of a book.
This book could have been 3 or 4 chapters or a novella in my opinion. It barely seemed to touch on any characters. Was basically hours of describing the setting for the next book i think! Probably a few hours of good conteny in the book.
But totallly worth reading if it sets the scenes for more epic storys like the previous ones, it sounds like the next book will have more action.

The answers seem so close. Can't wait to hear what comes next.
Thank you Mr Mancour.!!

Another superb duet...
I keep waiting for this series to fizzle out and to my delight it keeps going. Terry Mancour keeps the story going with creativity and flair, which is then matched with sublime delivery from John Lee.

The preparation.
A brilliant introduction into the complex nature of the “Thaumaturge”. As a follower from the start I felt it wanting in progress, in regards to overall plot.

A Great edition
its odd that with each new series, instead of conclusion, we get more mystery, lore and intrigue that always leaves excited for more. I pray for the autors health and that he has the stamina to see to an epic conclusion. (tho I never want it to end)

Aliens & Magic
I enjoy fantasy lit and this series has not failed to please. So far this series has found a way to be grounded in fantasy but gradually there have been hints of an outside element to the fantasy world. People from another world! Magic meets science. Characters are developed and there are touches of romance. If you enjoy robust storylines that branch only to reconnect when least expected then this is for you.

JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!
This has become one of my favourite fantasy epics of all time! I'm having so much fun listening to these and building upon the world that's already been created. I want more maps and fan art and groups!
