Publisher's Summary
Did you know that the gods can use mobile phones?
They can, and Odin has a message for Conrad....
Conrad Clarke, former RAF pilot and alleged gangster, gets a text – and a visit – from The Allfather.
Odin has a challenge for Conrad: Sign up to protect England from wild magick and get a commission in the King’s Watch.
All he has to do is find a missing witch. Simple.
Conrad never could resist a challenge. Before you can say “Ragnarok”, he’s plunged into a world of gods, mages, witches, dwarves, and one very aggressive giant mole.
But the witch doesn’t want to be found, and powerful mages will kill to keep her hidden. Going back isn’t an option. Going forward looks a lot like death.
Armed with nothing but a sense of humor and a willingness to cheat, Conrad has to find the Witch and save his life.
Superbly narrated by Ciaran Saward, the first two books of the King’s Watch are now available in audio format.
Treat yourself to a copy now and experience a whole new universe of magick. And moles....

A great story becomes even better
This is a great series of books, so I was a bit nervous about whether I'd like the audio version or not, but I need not have worried. As good as the books are, the story becomes even better with the narration. Little bits and pieces of the original story come alive under the effects of Ciaran Saward's voice. I was reading the latest book (Six Furlongs), and could almost hear the text in his voice! I can't wait for the next one!
If you're new to this series, it's a great mystery, with a strong urban fantasy element, and a nice romance thread that surfaces from time to time.

Despite the sample, Odin's not that big a part of
(As posted in Goodreads)
Well, I fear that my rating of this does not reflect my opinion of it; that is to say that I didn't really care for it that much.
On the other hand, I think it's probably pretty well written. I like the flavor of Norse mythology, but it was no more than a flavor, and overall, that ended up just being a misdirection. That may well be the reason that I didn't care for it as much as I expected to.
The characters were well defined and consistent. And the plot was pretty good. It was nice to see one of the early important characters show up at the end, as opposed to being totally forgotten. Actually, it may in fact be worthy of an entire series after all…

A Fun Read if You're an Urban Fantasy Fan
HUGE RoL fan here, always looking for more Urban Fantasy, and I enjoyed this romp. The prose is well-written, which is a deal-breaker for me if not. Past that, the story and characters are engaging. I enjoyed a couple of satisfying "Yeah! They deserved that!" moments. You can tell the author is finding his feet in the genre, and I expect his next installments will continue to gel. I'm looking forward to continuing with the series.

not as good
This book is compared to the rivers of London books but...
The characters are not as engaging. the framework is crude by comparison and the situations are not as well written. The breadth and depth of this book does not live up to that formula. The main character is not engaging - more like a James Bond with a mythological God for a sponsor. All he needs is a little magic and kapow.
On top of that this book uses a magical term that is used frequently in the rivers of London books but redefines it differently. Grates on the ear.

Awful robotic narration.
I’m about a 1/4 of the way through the book but I’ struggling to continue, I’ve speed it up to 1.5 x but the narration is awful. It sounds so robotic and unnatural, I’m genuinely disappointed as I love Audible and the ease it’s brought allowing me to « read » significantly more books than I ever would have been able to, but the narrators can really make or break a good book and despite the racing reviews from friends who physically read the book I am struggle to persevere. I’n shocked no one has mentioned this before but as someone who reads 2-3 audiobooks a month I consider myself a fairly avid reader not a newbie to Audible. Hugely frustrating and the thought of a further 7 books with this narration fills me with dread.

Odd
I’m not sure about this book at all. Initially, the reader’s “Narrator voice” seemed stilted and somewhat “ordinary” (though not in the “robotic” and slow way mentioned by another reviewer - I think that must have been a bad download). I got used to his voice more or less and was impressed with his comparatively excellent Geordie accent - 7 1/2 out of 10, bonny lad👍. The story, however, made no sense to me and appeared to jump from one thing to another, leaving me wondering what was going on; I actually got fed up with rewinding and re-listening in case I’d missed something. Perhaps this is abridged and I just didn’t realise - I’ll go back and check. Ultimately I found this book confusing and unsatisfactory and it didn’t engage me sufficiently to warrant going back to the beginning and starting again.

If you enjoyed ‘Rivers of London’ …
The King’s Watch books are excellent. I had found myself up to date with Ben Aaronovitch’s ‘Rivers of London’ series and wanted to find something as intellectual and well written. That can be a stretch with magical fiction! These books are the answer. The narration by Ciara Saward is absolutely top quality. Listeners who claimed his tone was ‘robotic’ clearly don’t understand the accent and mannerisms of an ex-military character from the Southern counties. Ciara is excellent at accents, and there are a lot to cover in this… his Odin is spectacular! There is also a wonderful touch of irony to much of it as well.
The stories are deep and can be quite complicated. Refreshingly, you have to keep on your toes and also accept that there is a lot of depth to the characters which you do not know to start with. This isn’t dumbed down for the hard of thinking. I’m three and a half books in now and loving the journey - highly recommended.

I enjoyed listening to this, the narrator was really good but I feel the story was a bit confusing. not sure if I just wasn't listening properly but things kept happening Andi had no idea what led to it.
Think they skipped bits to make it so there was a gang of friends for future books but went to fast.

Been waiting for this.
I think that I have read all the authors published works, but this is the first that I read of them.
Unfortunately those I wished to press it upon don't read.
It's a odd book and series, especially given Conrad's past history in other books. That doesn't prevent it being great fun.
One other review complained about a robot voice, it's deliberate. The thing speaking looks more like R2D2 than any animal, has few recognisable emotions and is made out of rock!
Still, if you came to this book from the authors other work you might well be shocked. Especially as Conrad carries through into this series, as does another character in a later book in this series, not yet available.

Conflicted
While I enjoyed the story and the characters as a whole, the implication that all these powerful magical women were kind of helpless and really just needed a big muscly military dude to come save them was gross.
Their mistrust of men was portrayed as kind of unreasonable despite its basis in the witch trials and messed up systems.
The characters were interesting and despite how annoyed I was, I was rooting for them, but I don’t think I’ll continue with the series as it seems like it will be more of the same.
