Story
Some people are born lucky. Then there’s me, destined to be loved by the man who knows my darkest secret. My gift has followed me my entire life—the ability to see the threads of fate. I can see the red thread tying together two people destined to love one another. But my gift has another side to it. A darker side. I can also see a simple black thread tied to the fingers of those who aren’t aware of it, connecting them to the person destined to kill them. And when I look down at my own finger, I can see the red thread stretched over to Bishop King.

Ari had a game plan for life: shoot people. Get money. Hang out with fellow criminal friends. He saw absolutely no reason to change that plan until one dark night in Memphis, when a little girl reached out to him with pocket change and a desperate plea for him to help her. Adopting an abused little girl off the streets was, needless to say, not part of the plan. Ari had no idea what he was doing with an eight year old. He especially didn’t know how to juggle taking contracts and raising a little girl.

After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord's shed is just the kind of excitement I need - especially when he brings his species leader to my door.

Michael Lesley + lavender alien = CUDDLELICIOUSNESS!!
This story was simply ADORABLE!! 😱😱
Wait! It’s Tris, our lavender, wriggly-haired alíen that’s ADORABLE! ❤️❤️❤️ He is beyond precious and so full of love!
I’ll warn you that this is a very insta-love story with “baby” and “honey” endearments from the get-go. I always have a problem with that, but Tris made me look the other way and not mind so much when his hunky, brown and bearded detective called him baby.
Tris is from a mysterious and xenophobic race of beings. Detective Hastion is human. Both live on a space station. Both are very into the other, but neither has a clue about how they feel until a runaway cat and a murder bring them together.
The mystery was interesting because of the otherness of the culture Carriger created for the galoi (Tris’ race).
The relationship was interesting because of the alien/human match-up, and the fact that Hastion’s brown shade was gloriously beautiful to the galoi.
This was a total fluff piece, murder aside. This was also totally hot 🔥🔥🔥🔥!! Can you say prehensile hair? Can you say self-lubricating member? ❤️❤️
I do hope Carriger creates more stories in this universe!

As Awesome As Socks and Ramen!
I don’t know why it took so long for me to listen to this one. But I’m glad I finally did.
I wasn’t sure what to expect since I didn’t read the blurb but let me tell you, this book delivers! It’s funny, it’s amusing, it’s sweet, it makes you wanna be friends with Tristol.
There’s the awkward getting-to-know-each-other phases, to growing more comfortable together and accepting each other’s being. There are hot steamy scenes as well. It was interesting but also hot.
There’s a bit of mystery too and while this one presents as a light sweet romantic sci-fi romance read, it also has a strong social commentary that makes us reflect on how societally-centered issues.
It truly is wonderfully written matched with Michael Lesley’s skillful narration.
This one is going to be worth your credit, it’s going to be one of those audiobooks that I’ll listen to again and again.
Five galactic stars all around.

Thought provoking, hilarious, moving, and sexy
Michael Lesley was the perfect choice of narrator for this sci-fi romance. He brought out the nuances of the story so well, and I'll definitely be seeking out more of his narration, as well as having started another of Gail Carriger's audiobooks the same day I finished this one. You can read the plot summary for yourself, but I would add that this hilarious, sexy whodunnit turns out nothing like you would expect, but something far more moving and thoughtful. It comes in at just under six and a half hours, relatively short for an audiobook, but it really packs a punch. Highly recommended.

Start over; my Darling.
Be brave enough to find the life you want and courageous enough to chase it. Then start over and love yourself the way you were always meant to. ♡Madalyn Beck♡
Tristol was absolutely adorable!!! ♡ I loved the way his sentient hair took different shapes based on his moods with his lavender skin, flirty charm, love of shoes and sweet demeanor. Also, how he took care of his friends cat 🐱 cuteness overload!!! I laughed hard when he was so intense on making sure the cat had the right amount of affection and playtime. His charm was innocent and perfect.
Drey is an amazing soul mate for Tris! He was such a grump in the beginning but I believe it was meant to cover up his true feelings. I can't gush enough about this story. Even the audio was phenomenal. Michael Lesley's narration was the perfect match for both of the MC's. I also enjoyed the side characters voices and quirky traits he gave them, everything was on point.
The only thing I am internally crying about is the fact that I want to be a part of Drey & Tristol's wedding day/honeymoon. I want to know all of the design ideas and colors that Tris has planned. I feel gypped on those details😭😭😭.
Overall the book was outstanding; everything from their love, sex scences, murder mystery and world building, I did not want this to end. I hope more books get added to this universe. I would love to read more Galoi love stories; it was mentioned that there are around 100 exiled so... (wink, wink, nudge, nudge... more please!!!). 🤣💕🥰💕

Gorgeous story and great audio version
A gorgeous story of space station life, love and acceptance. With a backdrop of a mystery death on a visiting spaceship to solve.
A stand alone story from GL Carriger (Gail Carriger with more explicit sex scenes) set on a space station with two main characters that come to life in an alternate world that's easy to move to.
The narration fits the story really well, and is a joy to listen to.

Thank you for hope
This might seem silly to some but this book has given me hope. Hope of acceptance. Hope of change. Hope of love. I am a genderfluid, pansexual being. I have been suiciedal since i was young and have tried and failed several times to take my own life. I also self harm. Some of this has been and still is due to feeling out of place within society. And even though this is a fiction book it has given me hope. Hope i had lost but desperatly needed. Thank you so much for giving me back some.

What a fantastic sci-fi story!
Tristol is a Galoi, a species with five genders, and he has lived in exile from his people for years. He bonds with Det. Drey Hastion, an earthling who maintains law and order on the human space station they both live in. When a Galoi spaceship unexpectedly requests assistance, Drey and Tris must investigate a murder onboard their ship. This cross-species romance was incredibly charming, fun, and thoughtful. Despite the low-level instalove, Drey and Tris have wonderful chemistry and I loved how much of a role Tris’s expressive hair and his love of purple played throughout the story! Good sci-fi always shines a questioning light on our own customs and beliefs and Gail Carriger certainly does that here. Michael Leslie is always such an enthusiastic and creative audio narrator and he really excels here.

great story but...
I just hate it when the endearment baby is used...like, there are so many better ones that don't mean infant human. The fact that once Drey started using that word he seemed to forget that Tris actually had a name was also super gross and kind of infantilising. I would have enjoyed this story a whole lot more if that word didn't exist in it.
I do recommend this book though, it's a great story, and Michael Lesley was awesome.

I recommend this to anyone who will listen.
Funny, hot, enjoyable and oh so poignant, this is a wonderful tale brought to life perfectly by Michael Leslie. I have read the book multiple times and will undoubtedly re-listen to this at some point. I hope we get more books featuring these wonderful two.

Funny sweet unrivalled plot
If you like alien world building G. L. Carriger has an inimitably hilarious and cleverly devised writing style and story flow. If you need an uplifting read with sexy heroes and a twisted plot you want to listen to this well narrated book.
