Publisher's Summary

With a cameo by Mindy Kaling, Regina Hall performs this captivating romantic comedy with a thrilling sci-fi twist!

Trinity Jordan leads a quiet, normal life: working from home for the Hive, a multifunctional government research center, and recovering from the incident that sent her into a tailspin. But the life she’s trying to rebuild is plagued by mishaps when Li Wei, her neighbor’s super sexy and super strange nephew, moves in and turns things upside down.

Li Wei’s behavior is downright odd—and the attraction building between them is even more so. When an emergency pulls his aunt away from the apartment complex, Trinity decides to keep an eye on him...and slowly discovers that nothing is what it seems. For one thing, Li Wei isn’t just the hot guy next door—he’s the hot A.I. next door. In fact, he’s so advanced that he blurs the line between man and machine. It’s up to Trinity to help him achieve his objective of learning to be human, but danger is mounting as they figure out whether he’s capable of the most illogical human behavior of all...falling in love.

About the Performer

A native of Washington, D.C., Regina Hall began her career in New York City where she studied English at Fordham University and received a Master’s degree from NYU in Journalism. She then studied at William Esper Studios in New York for two years, eventually landing her breakout role as Candy in Malcolm Lee’s debut film The Best Man. She would go on to reprise this role 14 years later in The Best Man Holiday.

Hall appeared in cult classics such as Love & Basketball, Paid In Full, and Malibu’s Most Wanted. In 2000, she filmed the first of four of the Scary Movie films and quickly became a fan favorite playing the outspoken and brazen, Brenda Meeks opposite Ana Farris and the Wayans brothers. In 2017, Regina was joined by legends Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and breakout star Tiffany Haddish in the raucous, blockbuster comedy Girls Trip. The summer hit grossed more than 140 million dollars becoming the first comedy of the year to surpass the 100 million dollar mark. It also became the first movie in history produced, written, directed, and starring African Americans to reach that milestone.

Next up was Andrew Bujalski's 2018 indie hit Support the Girls, which premiered at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, TX. Gaining the attention of film critics, her touching performance would earn her Gotham and Independent Spirit Award nominations as well as a spot on President Obama’s list of favorites for the year. In 2019, Regina became the first African-American actress to ever win a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress for this role. Regina starred in The Hate U Give, a film adaptation of Angie Thomas' best-selling novel. She was in the film Little, which she also executive-produced. Loved every minute!!

This is a book unlike any other romance I have come across. It’s rather futuristic, but yet set in a environment I can relate to. I love how the story unfolds slowly as we get more and more information. The computers, or AI’s, talking to each other are so intriguing! Basically, it is just simply a great story!

While I enjoy many types of romance books, including the ones where sex scenes are at least a full chapter, I really enjoyed the simplicity of this book and felt that descriptive sex scenes would have ruined the overall story. I liked the simplicity, yet complexity, of the story! I have become a huge fan of this author!

Regarding the narration, I wasn’t sure that I would like having so many different narrator’s. In fact, I have avoided this book for the last couple of months because of this dislike. But the concept of the book intrigued me so much I finally gave it a chance, and I am so glad I did! The changing voices or occasional sound effects only added to the story, and were in no way jarring.

Don’t overthink it like I did, just get the story! It’s very well written and quite clever! As a sidenote, I am rather picky of a good story. In fact, I deleted the last three romance audiobooks when I was only partway through them. This book kept me involved all the way through. And I want more!

Interesting Sci-Fi Romance

Overall 4 stars
Performance 5 stars
Story 3.5-4 stars

This was a really fun and interesting listen! Alyssa Cole is a new to me author, but I really enjoyed her writing style. I went in blind and found it quite entertaining. The AI Who Loved Me was a bit different than my normal listens, but that only made it more enjoyable. It took me a bit to get invested, but the story really picked up in the second half and I enjoyed the mystery and twist. The best part though, is the full cast narration. It made distinguishing between characters overall easier and the addition of sound effects really enhanced the story. I do wish that the same character would have been voiced by the same narrator throughout though to keep things consistent. For example, there were times that Penny was voiced by Mindy Kaling (love her!) and then others where a different narrator took over. I'm excited to see where the author takes the story next within this world.

Couldn’t finish it

I saw such great reviews I thought I would love this book but I couldn’t get past chapter 2. I love Regina Hall but her voice was bothering me. She sounded bored and tired.

Needs to be a movie

The audible was really really good. I loved the acting, I loved the characters talking in first person as well as with each other. I would love to purchase this in book format.

Wow... a delight for the ears!!

This was adorable. Just plan cute as can be! I had no idea I was going to end up being so enamored with such a different storyline. It really could have been the eargasim made possible with a full narrative cast. This is such a fun and fast listen. I was bummed when it was over but I can say this is one audiobook that I will relisten too and I do NOT relisten to audiobooks. Theres just too many, why would I? This one had it all and then some!

Love and Technology

I like the twist on this love story. The story line kept me guessing. I love the happy ending and the fact that Penny was given a body.

Not for me

Interesting storyline but personally I found the writing to be quite cringey and plain weird/awkward especially when performed. I liked the ending but some unanswered questions remain. Maybe they’ll be answered in the next book but I’m not overly keen on following up on this.

Cute

I enjoyed this a lot. I'm not usually one for sci-fi, but I trust Ms. Cole not to go too far with it. I didn't see the twist coming and I'm glad I waited to hybrid read this with the audio and the ebook. I'm glad I gave this a chance. I recommend this if for nothing else you like a diverse, unique story written by a well loved author.

Okay ,wasn't expecting so much about PTSD &anxiety

Has only a few rare funny bits.
Narration for most ,but not all characters is good. Story did make me want to know what would happen.
It did have a dark side going into her having panic attacks,PTSD (& not even decent therapy for PTSD) and her anguish ,global warming ,food shortages,a controlling society system ,flashbacks & it was really awkward in parts with the A.I. talking & not in a funny way 99% of the time. I didn't care for the future "Alexa" character, randomly looking up things like "deja vu".
Wouldn't listen a 2nd time, was expecting it to be more light hearted, but her neighbour nearly dying in front of her is hardly relaxing.

Loved it

I’m fairly new to audio romance novels so was apprehensive. But I totally loved it, I enjoyed that each character was voiced by a different person rather than it being a one man/woman show.
Storyline was captivating and loved the plot twist, will definitely listen to another one from this writer !!!

The audio performances is what kept me reading

Overall, I think this was a good read. However, if it was not for audible and the voice performances which included Regina Hall, I don’t think the actual storytelling would have captivated me as much.
I think the story itself is interesting and the concept too - where it’s scary to think that humans and AI could have actual relationships - not so far fetched!
However, I felt that there could have been more world building and character building. Although, I guess the centre is meant to be on Trinity and Lei Wei and things about them do unravel with time, so perhaps those two at the centre with less background was the author, Alyssa Cole’s intention.

Didn't realise what was hiding in plain sight.

I absolutely loved this book, one of my favourites actually. The narration voices were appropriate and the additional sound effects added that little something else. I actually wished the book was a bit longer but I realised that would be a whole new book for me to appreciate.

I won't spoil it for you... but this is not a predictable romance. Scifi action abounds.
