Publisher's Summary

This collection of recordings about Brother Cadfael—a Benedictine monk and amateur sleuth in the 12th century—are performed here by the ideal actor. Sir Derek Jacobi, who portrayed Cadfael in several television adaptations, captivates listeners with his renderings of Monk's Hood, Saint Peter's Fair, The Heretic's Apprentice, The Potter's Field, The Summer of the Danes, and Brother Cadfael's Penance.

A Marvelous Reading br Sir Derek Jacoby

Simply put, there is no better choice for listening to Brother Cadfael stories. It's a pity all 20 adventures weren't included

Reviewer: Jane Starfield

Sir Derek Jacobi is a wonderful reader, but does he bring out the Welsh in Cadfael, as some readers (not Virginia Benjamin) have done? When listening to her readings, it worried me that Cadfael’s character, never mind his Welshness, were communicated rather poorly. Jacobi, who became Cadfael so remarkably, in the TV series, recreates the gentle, speculative monastic detective formidably in this choice of Ellis Peters’ novels. And the lack of Welsh accent is really not a problem.
Apart from the fascination of each novel, what draws me to the series is that it is one of the few literary studies of the competitive reigns of King Stephen and the Empress Mathilda. If these anarchic cousins have not appeared in ‘person’ yet, their designs on the throne, their allies and deceptions create the tapestry that lines the walls of these novels, which also bring out the tiered Feudal System of the early 12th century.
Is Cadfael the best of monastic sleuths? That, I cannot say, but he is very high on my list.

Very entertaining

Easy to listen to, Derek Jacobi performs each story wonderfully.
Somehow gentle, the tales are still clever and engaging, the characters interwoven with historical events so they all become real and believable.
No downside, enjoyed it all the way through.

Excellent

Fabulous performance by Sir Derek Jacobi, but I wish that someone had spent some time checking and coaching in the pronunciation of the many Welsh words and place names - to a native Welsh speaker it was painful, but detracted only slightly from the pleasure of listening to Sir Derek.

For those who remember the TV adaptations.

I wish these had been recorded unabridged... but Jacobi's voice remains perfect for the character and reading.

Brother Cadfael

I enjoyed these stories, well adapted from the books. They were slightly spoiled for me by a lot of mispronunciation, especially of Welsh words. Cadfael was Welsh!

Good stories but sound quality a bit iffy

As always I enjoyed the Cadfael stories but the recording has some background noise. A shame.

Lovely nostalgia trip

Highly enjoyable and well read by Derek Jacobi. Sound was very occasionally dodgy and dropped out or 'blipped'.

Well narrated.

Much enjoyed when coping with severe pain. It helped to take my mind of it and it it can do that, need I say more.

very enjoyable

Very good particularly as the reader is Brother Cadfael himself! Derek Jacobi brings the story to life. I would certainly recommend.
