After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she describes how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset.

Story
Bonds That Make Us Free is a groundbreaking book that suggests the remedy for our troubling emotions by addressing their root causes. You'll learn how, in ways we scarcely suspect, we are responsible for feelings like anger, envy, and insecurity that we have blamed on others. Even though we fear to admit this, it is good news. If we produce these emotions, it falls within our power to stop them. But we have to understand our part in them far better than we do, and that is what this remarkable book teaches.

Story
Knowing how to transform conflict is critical in both our personal and professional lives. Yet, by and large, we are terrible at it. The reason, says longtime mediator Chad Ford, is fear. When conflict comes, our instincts are to run or fight. To transform conflict, Ford says we need to turn toward the people we are in conflict with, put down our physical and emotional weapons, and really love them with the kind of love that leads us to treat others as fellow human beings, not as objects in our way.

Story
One basic need all children have, educator Alfie Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including "time outs"), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful and largely unknown research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval.

Publisher's Summary
What if conflicts at home, conflicts at work, and conflicts in the world stem from the same root cause? What if we systematically misunderstand that cause? And what if, as a result, we systematically perpetuate the very problems we think we are trying to solve?

Through a moving story of parents who are struggling with their own children and with problems that have come to consume their lives, we learn from once-bitter enemies the way to transform personal, professional, and global conflicts, even when war is upon us.

Best of 600 in 30 Years!
Performance: Having listened to audio books for 30 years, this is BY FAR the best performance ever. There is no adequate comparison with the other 599 titles or the printed version. The narrator's skill at representing various characters is exceptional. It seems 10 people are in the recording studio. In fact, this is the only audiobook I've ever listened to again immediately after finishing. I would have given 6-stars for performance if possible.
Story: It's 5-star . . . but not 6. There is good reason for unfavorable reviews. The material doesn't suit everyone. Life experience, expectation, and "grumpiness quotient" count heavily. If you're on the "flower child" side of the spectrum rather than "gestapo," you'll like the story.
Overall: Remember this is a fictional story, *NOT* a textbook. There are valuable take-aways based on how you see the world. Listeners bring a partially filled canvas on which they are painted. As Obi-Wan Kenobi said, "Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view." Overall it is OUTSTANDING!

MUST READ!
Seriously, one of the best books I have read in a very, very long time. In my top 3. Seriously, if you're interested in a life free of detrimental self-fulfilling prophecies that harm our happiness and relations with others, this is a must read. The writing is fantastic as it's told in a story format which was super interesting, and a more invigorating way to receive the self-growth messaging. Loved it!

Not impressed
This book did have a couple of good points about taking responsibility for your perspectives on others and understanding their context outside of your perception. But overall it was very cheesy, the dialogue was unrealistic to the point of insult, and the kicker was the ideology that abused women should be “compassionate” toward the men who beat them. I’ve heard this more than once so let me explain to y’all why it’s so offensive. Even people who have always been compassionate and always seen their abuser “as a person” STILL GET ABUSED. No amount of being compassionate toward evil makes evil stop, I don’t care what your ideology is. This suggestion that people are somehow responsible for being beat up is insulting and sick as it is pervasive. Maybe it’s easier to be so condescending toward abused adults, but the kids are usually abused too. You want to go tell them they’re not being compassionate enough? Here’s a suggestion. Tell the people beating people up to be more compassionate and see their punching bag (whether physical or emotional) “as a person.”
