The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

Do you feel as though something is missing in your life? Do you often feel like your emotions get the best of you? Do you run into trouble within relationships with people at home, at work, in a business, or whatever because you feel like you need to control the situation? Stoicism is an ancient Western philosophy whose simple, time-tested teachings of virtue, confidence, and self-control have inspired generations of scholars and spiritual practitioners...one of its main tenets is that we don’t always have control over what happens to us, yet we do have control over how we react.

Publisher's Summary
Humanity has been on an unending quest to find inner peace and happiness since the dawn of time. Two components necessary for a quality life yet oh so difficult to find. It was not until the rise of ancient Greece that we came close with the ideology of Stoicism. The Ancient Art of Stoicism: An Insight into the Stoic Philosophy, Ethics, Wisdom, and Meditation explores this timeless philosophy while adding new insights of which you may not have thought.
Many of us already endure pain and hardships without articulating emotions. That stoic nature is difficult to attain and even harder to control. The Ancient Art of Stoicism traverses back to ancient Greece where debate saw to the rise of the greatest philosophers in history. Famous for much of the modern world’s greatest inventions and history-altering dynamics, Greece is truly the foundation upon which society has been built.
The Ancient Art of Stoicism began when men learned how to focus on those aspects of life that are controllable while tuning out those that are out of reach. A worthy edition to add to any collection, The Ancient Art of Stoicism sheds light on a subject many think they know but few understand.
Here is what you'll find inside:
- An introduction to Stoicism
- A glimpse into the history of Stoicism
- The great Stoic philosophers
- Stoic logic and reason
- Theology and cosmology
- Stoic ethics and virtues

This book is interesting
This book is interesting from an academic point of view and actionable from a personal perspective, I am very happy somebody went through all the classics and did the hard work to organize it in a way that makes sense, I find myself frequently using it as a manual to try to appreciate my life as it is, to find this "tranquility", so I can focus in the important things; there is so much noise!

A great summary of Stoic tips
I loved this book. I discovered Stoicism about a year ago by reading Happy by Michael Davenport. I didn't enjoy that quite as much but wanted to look into the topic more. I think this book did a fabulous job at explaining Stoic philosophy in a reasonably brief manner while giving practical tips on how to apply it to your own life every day. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone.

Excellent book!
This is a very well written introductory guide to Stoicism.
The first part introduces Stoicism, then covers its history and prominent figures.
The second part outlines the core concepts, principles, and rules.
The third part elaborates on concepts that are sometimes misconstrued, such as emotions and relationships (Stoics don't lack or repress emotions, they just don't allow them to override reason when they make decisions.)

The Ancient Art of Stoicism
It isn't often that a book can deliver on its promise, but for me, this one hit the jackpot. If it weren't against my new Stoic principles, I would deeply regret that I have gone so long without having read it. The author makes you really think about what is important in life and keeps you honest about your likely mistaken answers. He describes Stoicism in a very accessible way, and his style is quite entertaining (considering the subject). I am a senior engineering student, but I could literally not put this book down. If someone had told me a couple of weeks ago that I would read a book about philosophy in less than a week, on my own time, I would have laughed in their face.

Well-researched
The Stoics have bewildered me for years with false impressions of old men, practicing sad philosophy. Not so! I was astounded to be advanced in my own practice of tranquility through masterful arts of negative visualization and avoiding the temptations to pursue riches, fame, and possession as a means of joy. Thank you for this brilliant and well-researched recap of the philosophy.

The title is well deserved
The string of events that led me to the purchase of this book is quite extraordinary, but suffice it to say I am completely new to philosophy. I came upon this book after doing some Google searches about Stoicism for my intro-level philosophy class. I believe the author has some essays online which advertised this book, and the rest is history.

This is a great book
This is a great book if you have been reading about Stoicism, and want to have a good idea of how to adapt the ideas to the modern age. It also gives you some background and ideas for understanding the stoics before just diving in and reading them. The book is clear and gives a good account of the author's reasoning and reasoning that you may also want to take a Stoic philosophy into account.

very well done
Although not a type of book I would normally read, I decided this time to give it a go, and it did not disappoint. It's about ancient wisdom and how to apply the knowledge they're off to your thoughts and actions to everyday life to make it better… very well done.
