Publisher's Summary

The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise dating from the 5th century BC and is attributed to the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu ("Master Sun", also spelled Sunzi). The text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare and it is commonly thought of as a definitive work on military strategy and tactics. It was placed at the head of China's Seven Military Classics upon the collection's creation in 1080 by Emperor Shenzong of Song, and has long been the most influential strategy text in East Asia. It has had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy, and beyond.

The book was first translated into French in 1772 by the Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. The first annotated English translation was completed and published by Lionel Giles in 1910. Leaders such as Mao Zedong, General Võ Nguyên Giáp, General Douglas MacArthur, and leaders of Imperial Japan have drawn inspiration from the work.

Sun Tzu has created a Masterpiece for all time

This is one of my bi-annual books that I go to every other year and read. Some of the others are the Book of Five Rings, The Prince, and Leadership Secrets of Atilla the Hun. Yeah, February is a fun month for me. Even though I have read this book more than 100 times I always walk away from it with a fresh perespective and something new. You can look at this as a military guide if you want to, but I see it as a way of life. Hints, tips, and tricks for maintaining balance in a rocky world. There is a reason this book has lasted so long; it is as relevent today as it was centuries ago. There are numerous life lessons that you should adhere to steadfastly.

I got this version for one reason, the narration of Roberto Scarlato. The man is on my go to list for audiobooks, and even in the written word (the man is an incredible writer, too), so when I saw that he had narrated a cherished book, I had to get this. He does not disappoint in the slightest way. The man is on point, and I swear he channels Tzu's spirit as he commandingly tells you of each strategy. He is easy to listen to, having a pleasant voice, and speaks in clear somber tones so that there is never a question of what he has said or Sun Tzu intended. His resonance and resounding voice couples well with the wisdom of this book. You couldn't ask for a better narrator.

If you are in a battle, this might help

Here are some helpful strategies about conflict, if conflicts there must be. There are always battles to fight, this book might help you to choose your battles a little more wisely.

If your battles are not on the literal battlefield, you may need to employ your skills of abstraction in order to benefit from this advice collected within a militaristic context.

This is an engaging little classic, pleasantly narrated.

This is the second time I have listened to this book this year, and it really shows the skills of a good narrator. Roberto Scarlato is a brilliant narrator, and it feels like I learnt more from this second read through. I love The Art of War, especially the applicability to the modern day.

1,000,000 Fortune Cookies

Maybe I missed something. "The Art of War" is often cited as wisdom through the ages and as a metaphor for successful living. I didn't get it. To me it sounded like an endless stream of fortune cookies.

What was lacking, in my estimation, was true wisdom. Most of the so-called advice was way too basic. I found myself saying "Well, duh" a lot.

Roberto Scarlato did an excellent job maneuvering through what could have been even more boring material.

The good news is "The Art of War" is less than two hours so it's easy to get through and you can then check that box on your "In Need To Read" bucket list.

Great tune and speed. Voice is stable and reliable. Perfect matching. Word need 15, sentence is too short.
