Story
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. At first it seems like an open and shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. Then new evidence makes Mack suspect the man who reported the crime is in fact the perpetrator. But Mack isn't the only one with a stake in the case.

Isabella Rose Book 4
Napoleon Ryan is an outstanding narrator but his voice is simply wrong, wrong, wrong for this series mostly about a 16 year old girl and her female friend.
THE ASSASSIN is Book 4 in the series with protagonist Isabella Rose, daughter of now deceased British espionage agent Beatrix Rose, being 16 years old assassin. The plot delves off into medically and scientifically impossible situations that go into the area of fantasy rather than espionage. I am through with this series.
I am a fan of author Mark Dawson. I have listened to all of his audio books in this series, the Beatrix Rose series, the Soho Noir series, and the John Milton series and I have rated almost all of the 32 books 4 or 5 stars.

Hooked on lame series
First off the narrator is mediocre at best...does horrible on the female voices. Secondly, Dawson again fills his novel with unnecessary street names, turns, scenic and weaponry description that I'm able to multi task while listening and not miss any of the story line. Having said that, when the author does address the subject matter of the book it's really well written with plenty of suspense and action to the plot. Isabella is gaining traction as an assassin and was glad to see Pope reimerg in the thick of things; sans his wife and family. That's another part of the story that irritated me as Pope's wife was portrayed as an unfeeling unappreciative woman who didn't care about him or what he went thru to save his family. Anyway, as usual I will be waiting on the follow-up book in this series.

Weird speaking cadence spoils the reading
It's very odd. I have found 2 narrators with similar strange speaking affectations. The first is Napolean Ryan, reading this book, and the the other is Susan Duerden, reading "The Rook". I believe that both are British, and I have to wonder, is this strange speaking cadence is intrinsic to one or more of Britain's many dialects of English?
Lydia from Texas wrote a succinct evaluation of Susan's reading of "The Rook".
"... - the narration was completely horrid - I could not focus on the content at all because of the weird sing-song cadence of the narrator. Every sentence was just an arpeggio - with her voice going up and down with each syllable..."
While Napolean Ryan's rendition is not quite so strongly cadenced as that of Susan Duerden, I still find it quite annoying. I cannot recommend this audio book.

Robot performer
A good actor/narrator can read a telephone book and give it colour. In this case it is quite the opposite: although it gets minimally acceptable towards the end, the monotous rythm, nearly always ending with a higher pitch made the listen a torture. I can only save the dialogues, where this feature is less applied. I previously had the same problem with Paul Thornley... have they both gone to the same school? Or is it the current trend and I shall have to put up with it? Many of the Mark Dawson titles are read by David Thorpe. Why change?

Needs a Female Narrator!
I struggled to listen to this instalment of Isabella Rose. I had to resort to increasing the play speed to endure the narration. Given the protagonist is female in this series, surely it would make sense to have a female narrator. After all, John Milton books aren’t read by a female narrator!
Unfortunately this will be my last Isabella Rose audiobook unless there is a change of narrator - so sorry Mr Ryan 😐

Good story, annoying narrator
It's a roaring story that covers the background of Isabella Rose, spoiled by the narrator's inability to read more than a few words without pausing.
Ignoring the narration, the story is just as good as the John Milton series with potential to exceed. A bit akin to a female Bourne, she has her own agenda and is only slightly influenced by those around her.
Can't wait to read more from this series
