Publisher's Summary

Diggory Finch had a mother that didn’t seem to want him and a father that chose to run from every struggle the family ever had. The same father lied about the family fortune.

But now Grandma Beatrice is gone, and Diggory has inherited Finch Island in Twin Falls, as well as millions of dollars, a house, an old mill building, and the profound, evil darkness that dwells at the center of his family’s heart.

Diggory returns home, happy and comfortable for the first time in a home that’s not going anywhere, and starts the process of opening up a game store on his family’s property. He even meets a young lady that makes him want to stop sabotaging his relationships. Could it be love?

Or will the horror that unfolds undo all he’s ever wanted?

The Finch family is surrounded by people who want something from them. They want the dark power that Diggory has access to. They want the doorway only he can open to remain open forever, and if they have to lock him up so the ancient evil he can access can always flow to them, then so be it.

But for the first time, this Finch isn’t running, and he isn’t content to be used to unleash evil on the world.

Can Diggory harness the great darkness within him and defeat the monsters that feast on the people of Twin Falls, or will he lose control and put the entire world at risk?

Enter the world of Twin Falls; a modern day Lovecraftian universe of ancient, eldritch evils, cults, monsters, and one very sarcastic young man that's just sick of being used, abused, and self-destructive.

Wow! Just Wow!

I love this book. Diggory Finch is such an interesting character. And it seems he may be the first in his line to be smart enough (or dumb enough) to stand up and face what is going on head-on. Of course, he has the most amazing new friend - the local librarian. Librarians are awesome and she believes him and is standing by him. It appears she will be a strong female character in the series - which is always a plus. But my favorite character other than these two is the psychiatrist. I backed the kickstarter and also won a contest, so I got to name a character. Morandia Hallett Perry is named after me, so every time I hear her name I smile. I don't know yet if she is good, evil, or a product of her situation, but she is part of the twelve. I'm very curious about the 13th.

This book is broken into two types of entries - Diggory's diary entries for his future self and Interlues which give us some insight into the other world and the history of Twin Falls. This is an excellent device to separate yet bring together the story. I look forward to the next one. A++. I'm ready for more! The narrator is exellent as well. And he even pronounced my name choice correctly! Kudos to him for that. Way to go Joe!

I am generally not into horror, but this one is a good one. I will read more in the series as they come out. I recommend you do too.

Do yourself a favor and get this book

From start to finish it's just plain good.

You meet a flawed yet relatable character in a world that isn't what it seems. His self deprecating tendencies show the depth that the character is aware of his flaws and shortcomings but you get to watch him come into his own and rise to the occasion in a messed up situation and all the intrigue and mayhem that comes along when dealing with the occult.

The voice author pulls you in and you feel like you're listening to a friend. I personally recommend 1.20 speed. but you do you!

10/10 would recommend!

A must read

The characters are amazing the environment is rich and detailed. Chris Philbrook did a masterful job in writing a lead who is flawed aware of them and continue to try and do the best he can for the good of all. Joe Hempel was amazing in bringing the world and characters to life.

Epic start to a series

I love Diggory Finch. This book was so hard to wait for but so worth the wait! I am a new fan of Chris Philbrook, but he has become one of those authors that I see their name and buy the book. This book I proudly backed on Kickstarter and will do again and again if he asks for it. The story is interesting, the characters are believable... I loved this book and highly recommend

Wow! This book is awesome!!!

I’ve read about 12-13 books this year already and this is my favorite so far. I could not stop listening. I was seriously considering calling in sick just so I could finish it. The narration was perfect and the story line superb. Do not hesitate on this purchase! The characters were great and I’m already a fan of Mr. Finch. Can’t wait for more of this story.

Another Amazing Series by Philbrook

Chris Philbrook has written some amazing series’s. Adrian’s Undead Diary took us on an epic struggle of good vs evil during the Zombie Apocalypse. Tesser: A Dragon Among Us, kicked off a funny fantasy in the Reemergence Series. So I was excited to start The Awakening. This world building, Lovecraftian style, horror story is the perfect start to a promising series.
Filled with Heart, Humor, and Horror, this opening novel sets up everything we need to lose ourselves in a world full of monsters!

underwhelming

The story had good ideas, but its execution felt rushed and plain underwhelming. Add a narrator that has the samr cadence of a tik-tok robot, it was difficult to finish this book.

This book is awesome. I want to learn more about Diggory Finch and how his family is tied into the weird happenings and the creatures that inhabit Twin Falls. I have soooooo many questions I need answered and now I have to impatiently wait for book two it's so unfair lol. Seriously though if you're looking for a really good book with a lot of twists and turns and that will have you scratching your head saying what just happened, grab this one you won't be sorry I know I wasn't disappointed.

A fantasy story to delve into...

I really enjoyed thús story, it ended up having far more depth than I initially thought it would. I wouldn't normally be a fan of this sort of genre, but after giving it a go I'm now eagerly awaiting the next installment.
Great work...
