Publisher's Summary

London, 1866.

Dr. Barnabus Milligan has always felt called to help people, whether that means setting a broken bone or rescuing the impoverished women of London from their desperate lives on the streets, as part of his work with the Dread Penny Society.

Three years ago, he helped rescue Gemma Kincaid by secretly marrying her to protect her from her family of notorious grave robbers. But six months after Gemma and Barnabus exchanged vows, she realized her love for her new husband was unrequited. To protect her heart, she left, telling Barnabus to contact her if his feelings for her ever grew beyond a sense of duty.

When Barnabus sends a letter to Gemma inviting her to return home, she hopes to find a true connection between them. But unfortunately, he only wants her help to foil the Kincaids, who have been terrorizing the boroughs of London, eager to gain both money and power.

Heartbroken, Gemma agrees to help, but she warns Barnabus that she will not stay for long and that once she goes, he will never see her again.

Yet as the couple follows the clues that seem to connect the Kincaids to the Mastiff, the leader of London’s criminal network, Gemma and Barnabus realize they might make a better match than either of them suspected. Perhaps the marriage that had once saved Gemma’s life might now save Barnabus—and his lonely heart.

But before the once-confirmed bachelor can properly court his secret bride, they will need to evade the dangerous forces that are drawing ever closer to the hopeful lovers and the entire Dread Penny Society itself.

Just couldn’t finish it.

The narrator was so bad I just couldn’t finish it. It was mentioned by others but she made all the characters were in there 70’s or 80’s. So disappointed. If there are others in the series, I will not be listening to them if this lady is the narrator. So disappointing.

I'm just starting the book. boy an I cranky

The whole series is done by Justine Eyres and this book isn't. it was just as well written as the other books. with this narrator everyone sounded really old and was a different tone to the whole book without Justine.

AMAZING book! …but the voice is all wrong!

I’ve been a huge fan of this series and held my breath waiting for the Bachelor and the Bride to come out on Audible! The story was amazing and did not disappoint, however the new reader was extremely hard to listen to. After three books read in Justine Eyre’s voice it was a huge adjustment to change to someone who’s voice was completely different. On top of that, she made the main female character sound extremely annoying with a high-pitched cockney accent that was quite overdone. I would highly recommend reading this book but not listening. As I said, the book itself is AMAZING and did not disappoint! The reader, however, was pretty rough.

Yes! But also no...

This may be the best book in the series so far. The story was intriguing and tight with a new charater dynamic for the series. The ending held the twists and turns I had been hoping for in the last book.

Unfortunately, the narration is very disappointing. I hope so much that they can get Justine Eyre back for the next book(s). This narrator would be fine for another story, but she simply does not have enough different voices for this one. Every lowerclass accent sounds alike and Stone's American accent is patchy at best. Characters can be hard to distinguish from one another.

I beg that the people in charge go back to the original author for the upcoming books. For Maureen and Stone's sake if nothing else.

I HAD TO STOP LISTENING THE NARRATOR IS HORRIBLE!

I wish I could give this a real review as I'm sure it is as amazing as the other books in this series. I just couldn't keep assaulting my ears like that.  I feel bad for Sarah because this book won't get the reviews it deserves.  This narrator made everyone sound like they were in their 70s and smoke a pack a day, Plus I really couldn't tell when the characters changed.  My Hubby was able to read it as an ARC and loved it and said it was amazing and had the best Penny Dreadful story so far. I'm dyslexic and have a hard time reading so I rely on audio to enjoy these stories. I'm not sure I will finish reading anytime soon.

I miss Justine Eyre!

Unfortunately, I have to echo the other comments made regarding the narrator. All the women in the story sounded like old ladies, accents were not believable. I also didn't find the story as compelling as the others. My least favorite book of the series.

best yet

I enjoy this series and anticipate the next book. I love the cliffhangers at the end of each book. This one has some extra twists that I didn't see coming.

Love this series

I have enjoyed all the books in the this series. Sarah Eden is a favorite of mine, her Hope Springs series is my absolute favorite. The ending of this book…WOW did not see that revelation coming. I liked this story and love these characters, but the narrator change was just ok.

The underworld of london

this latest story of The Penny Dreadfuls was alright but not as good as the first few in the series. the narration was reasonable but again not as good as the narrator of the first books. lots of twists and turns in the story, an insight into the darker side of London in those days.

Story unfinished

Ending too abrupt and unfinished. Disappointed with this one . It seems it needs another chapter
