Publisher's Summary

Save yourself from more than half of the trouble most beginning and advanced homesteaders have to deal with.

Homestead gardening has exploded over the last few years. One in three US households now gardens to provide food for their families.

There are a variety of reasons why people are getting into gardening in such numbers. At the top of the list is that you can ensure the quality and nutrition of their fruits and vegetables. You also maintain control over where and how they’re produced so they know they’re safe.

Additionally, homestead gardening can save you a lot of money. Did you know that for the required purchases to garden, the average grower experiences a return of investment of over 700%?

Homesteaders also report a psychological satisfaction that comes from working the land to provide for their own food.

If you have a garden or are considering one, now is the perfect time to start or take it to the next level. Optimizing your efforts provides superb results that no grocery store could ever compete with.

It’s also the start of a self-reliant lifestyle because once you get proficient in gardening for food, it has real economic benefits both meeting actual needs and saving money.

Are you wondering if this kind of gardening will work in your backyard?

The answer is 100% yes, it will work, because there are plants and gardening techniques that work for all sorts of living situations.

All you need is a basic understanding of particular plants and their needs to make sure you can live a self-sufficient life as a homesteader.

In The Backyard Homestead Manual, you'll discover:

  • A gardener’s framework for effective planning to ensure your harvest is sufficient
  • Different garden bed options to accommodate your available space
  • Straightforward ways to improve the quality of your soil
  • Specialty fruits and vegetables that grow in tricky environments
  • Six easy ways to ensure you eat well throughout the winter
  • Three things you can't overlook if you want your plants to reliably grow
  • New strategies for getting rid of weeds that minimize your required time and effort

And much more.

No matter if you are new to homesteading or you are an established farmer, The Backyard Homestead Manual meets you wherever you are in your gardening process and helps you to overcome the challenges you are facing right now.

Some people are resistant to starting gardening or increasing its scope because of the time commitment. While there are things you need to do on a regular basis, the reality is that when you get a solid system in place, most of the chores can be done quickly and effectively so you can get on with other parts of your day.

Lacks substantive information

I found this book more of a general introduction to gardening, for someone who had literally never heard of the concept of a garden or a farm. There was absolutely zero useful information. It was so superficial as to be pointless. Do not recommend.

I highly recommend this audiobook

This book even gives advice on livestock, from picking the animal, building the cages, caring for it, and eventually butchering it. Just a very thorough, great, book.

Good listen for beginning homesteader

I found some of the tips helpful. If you are not a beginner however you may find it much less helpful.

Narration is so bad it's distracting

The overall content of the book is high level but a good starting point if you are thinking about getting into self sufficiency. This book is not a comprehensive how-to of homesteading but rather an overview with broad coverage.

The problem I had was with the narration. The narrator sounds like a non-native English speaker. There is no discernible accent per se but the way he pronounces the words and the emphasis is off. It is possible this is a computer-generated narration. One or two mispronunciations is OK but it happens so often that it is distracting. There are also times when the wrong word is used, changing the meaning of what is being said.

Wonderful audio book

The idea of having so much food in such a small space is so grand that it makes the book worth having, even if it's to just dream a little. It's hard work to pack so much into a small space but for many that's all you've got.

I think this is a great listen

I think this is a great listen for someone like me who doesn't know much about simple things to help preserve food (canning) and good information on how to start backyard gardening. The illustrations are great so you don't have to surf the internet to figure out what half the things are or what they look like, mentioned in the book

This is a mind blowing book

The book has sections for birds, goats, bees, you name it. I enjoyed this book so much that I had to also buy The Backyard Guide to Farm Animals as a companion book. Well written and very informative.

I'm so glad that I listen this book

I have thoroughly enjoyed The Backyard Homestead. Having only an acre myself, it gives me so many ways I can utilize my small space to it's limits. I have gone back time and time again to this book to research.

Fantastic helpful book.

I found this book incredibly helpful for even a larger piece of property. It was clear, concise, extremely thorough and very easy to read. I highlighted so many areas in the book I probably should have highlighted the areas that weren't all that pertinent to us, I'd had used less highlighter!

Easy to follow

I love this book! Simple to understand and perfect for the beginner and to get started living off the grid a little at a time! Simple BUT enough detail to build each item easily!
