Publisher's Summary

Fresh from the staggering success of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, Marcus Goldman is struggling to write his third novel. A chance encounter in Florida throws him some inspiration from a surprising source: Alexandra Neville, the beautiful, phenomenally successful singer and Marcus' first love.

All at once memories of his childhood come flooding back. Memories of a family torn apart by tragedy and a once glorious legacy reduced to shame and ruin. The Baltimore Boys. The Goldman Gang. That was what they called Marcus and his cousins, Hillel and Woody. Three brilliant young men with their whole lives ahead of them, before their kingdom crumbled beneath the weight of lies, jealousy and betrayal. For years Marcus has struggled with the burdens of his past, but now he must attempt to banish his demons and tell the real story of the Baltimore Boys.

Translated from the French by Alison Anderson.

Dire!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Such a disappointment. I quite enjoyed "The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair" even though it was a bit long-winded. This took long-windedness to another level.

Has The Baltimore Boys put you off other books in this genre?

No

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He couldn't detract from it any further!

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Started quite well but I was losing the will to carry on after a couple of hours. I tried but things did not improve.

In one word, captivating.

A captivating and extremely well written piece of literature. The authors timeline and oustanding character building allows the reader to delve into the world of his words and will have you listening into the late hours of the night. Great read and I highly recommend it!

If you Like Harry Quebert...don't buy this!!

I am several hours in to this book and I still don't know what the point of this book is. the narrator is excellent but the story is rambling and so far seemingly disjointed.

Loved this story - covers a period of 20 years and the friendship of three boys. The narrative and the narration was superb.

OK follow up to Harry Quebert Affair but lacking

Any additional comments?

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair had a bit more of a mystery about it and an interesting format. This is a good character study but isn't quite as gripping albeit well written. Try Harry Quebert first, then try this if you want a more sedate book

A great family saga

A chronicle, a family saga, interesting characters, a few twists, sad moments, funny moments, happy moments. Narration is top notch.

I really wanted to like it.

First of all I want to say the narrator was phenomenal, I could hear him all day long. The actual book didn’t grip me at all, I really wanted to like it but it just didn’t do it for me. I absolutely loved The truth of the Harry Quebert affair and it’s still one of my top favourite books. I was really hoping this would have been like that one.

not a patch of the Harry Qubert affair

Pedestrian and lacking any twists or turns. it's a pleasant amble through a park, all the items meant to excited are signposted so obviously you're left straining for a surprise that never comes.

A bit longer than it needed to be

Great story, great characters, great narrator but the author tends to repeat himself more than necessary, leaving the book longer than it really should be. Still enjoyed it very much all the same!
