Put on some slippers and a bathrobe before reading

We kind of cheated with this book. We actually had a long drive to visit my mother over the weekend, and my kids insisted that we listen to the next book in the series. They have been asking me repeatedly when book two was coming out, and yelling at me to get it the moment it was produced. So, one loooong car ride later, and here we are at a review.

As good as the first book was I really think this book turned out better. There is not a lot of flipping between characters as there was in the first novel, and I have to say the winged people were not my favorite parts. Now that they have all joined up we really only have four POV's; Darwin, Kass, Robert, and the King. This pared down line up helps the flow of the book immensely, it streamlines it to a much needed degree. Additionally, when there is POV change it makes sense and keeps in line with the plot.

Another bonus is that this picks up right where book one finished, well not exactly as the ending of book one was a jump to the past, but you start right where everybody left off. Darwin continues to be a favorite character of mine, and I loved listening to him spar with spoons. Who else but Doctor Who does that? Maybe the Blue Rajah from Mystery Men, but that's about it.

The plot, the pacing, and the action all amp up, and we get some really good character growth. My kids just loved it, and have been saying they want to listen to it on the next ride back for Easter. I might just let them, even though I generally only listen to a book once in the car. It keeps me awake having fresh material, but this could work again.

Broadhead blasts down your expectations with his readings. He does some great voices, and imparts a ton of emotion to the characters. You really do feel both the king's pain and his anticipation for battle. You empathize with Kass, and Darwin just impresses you with the fortitude in his voice.

If you liked book one, you will absolutely LOVE book two. Now we can't wait for book 3! Keep 'em coming, Charles and we'll keep on reading them!!

Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Oh man this is getting interesting

uh-oh this book ends in a very tricky situation. I'm not sure when the next book in this series comes out but it will be very interesting.

Narrator talks like he's selling used cars.

The narrator is clearly smoking meth. My ears hurt.

The writing mechanics are just bad. The author constantly uses the wrong words in common colloquialisms. Adjectives are used incorrectly or repetitiously. The dialogue is just painful.

I had my doubts after the first book but ultimately the plot was interesting enough that I decided to give book 2 a shot. Unfortunately, several hours in, nothing of note has happened aside from a lot of inane and totally unimportant conversations between idiot characters.

If you have a high-school level education in English and you don't want to listen to a voice that sounds like it's about to shout "You can get all this for just $19.95!!!" you will end up returning this book.

Yeeeaaaahh, um, No!!

The narration is horrendous.. Its quite obvious that the narrator did absolutely zero research on the books before absolutely butchering them.. A shame really as the story line itself is interesting enough.. I'm glad Charles Dean started using Jeff Hays for all the other series he has on Audible..
