gripping narrative of a community sacrifice

The story of the first wave of D-Day and how it affected the small town of Bedford, Virginia. The community lost 21 young men in the invasion for it's nationalized National Guard unit was chosen to spear head the greatest invasion in history. One community's sacrifice and the men who made it. The story is well told and you can feel the anguish of those involved.

excellent

Takes you to the front line - the description of the D-Day landing is totally engaging and leaves you in no doubt as to the true despair and horror of that place as well as the courage and spirit of the men who fought and died there

The true cost of war

This book reveals the true cost of war abs these truths are relevant today. The WWII military drafted force has transitioned into an all volunteer force, but the small town impact is still realized when we hear of a Service Member who has died in combat. Veterans understand these truths. This book will help American who’ve not served understand the true cost of war. Great book.

Try to listen and Not cry

The only thing I can say is I should have asked my grandfather more questions than I did. Laverne Peterson was a paratrooper on D-Day. he got stuck in a tree, cut himself down, broke his leg on the fall, took German fire to a grenade on his belt, which he survived. He was a POW held in a French barn. He survived only because his captors allowed a US Medic tend to his wounds. He was left to die when the Germans fled ahead of the Allies swooping through. He was in am English hospital for many months, was released and continued his fight in Germany. God Bless Those men and families who gave all that they had for freedoms we often take for granted.

An interesting story but rather mawkish

Not one of Mr Kershaw’s best. Maybe it was the narration but I just did not engage so well with this story. It became a bit too sentimentalised and vague as to the subject matter. Perhaps the book would be better to read than an audio book.

An interesting enough story

A clearly well researched work that details the horror of war. Narration was a little bland but the story interesting enough to make me want to finish it.

Sacrifice

Tells in gory detail and heartbreaking reference to the horror of war both at the front and at home where worry and lack of knowledge kindle burning fear. Future generations need to know about our mistakes to let them learn how we had to give up so many lives to achieve the peace that we all want. Todays political leaders should be made to read this.
