Publisher's Summary

Lily is back from Australia for the first time in seven years to spend Christmas at her mum’s house in a small, gossipy English village. To her surprise, she returns to find that her mother is dating the man next door, who also happens to be the father of her ex-boyfriend Tom. Tom, who broke Lily’s heart all those years ago. Tom, the real reason Lily fled to the other side of the world and stayed there. Tom, who is also home for Christmas and right there, next door.

In what is shaping up to be the worst Christmas ever, somehow Lily and Tom have to try to get along and play happy families, but living with the man who she is clearly not over is proving to be difficult, and tensions are high. Add in some drunken caroling, a reindeer bite, a potent Christmas pudding and some meddling parents and Lily’s trip home will turn her entire life upside down.

Wonderful Christmas Story…

I just finished this audible book and I LOVED it! It was so nice to listen to a Christmas book that actually talks about doing Christmas activities and having a romance which I don’t usually like. It was funny and interesting and made me feel Christmas. It’s a bit of Australia but mostly my favorite, a bit of English in an amazing town. I’m in pain right now to and I laughed out loud many times and smiled the whole way through. I am going to listen to it again and hopefully every Christmas. Get this book you will not be disappointed. Very good book. Thank you so much for the great gift of a Christmas book and having it read to me. I enjoyed it immensely. Happy Christmas

Grouchy

I know Australian language is normally seasoned with expletives, but it was a bit over-salted for me. Especially the common use of disrespect for Christian deity. A person’s religion is their rightful choice, but it is personally precious.
The amount of time spent expressing rude behavior is also simply jarring for me.

Christmas Cozy

From the summary, I was expecting more of a Bridget Jones Xmas rom-com. Turns out this wasn’t a laugh out loud “best-worst” Xmas, and was instead a sweet second chance romance with enough personality to put a smile on my face. No cussing and only kisses before fading to black puts this in cozy romance territory. Like many romances, this relies heavily on the “failure to communicate” trope.
But, for a free novella, this was easily forgiven.

Missed the mark a little….

It hit some of the points of a Christmas story…. predictable ending and classic misunderstanding, but definitely would have been better without the language. I know this probably doesn’t bother most people, but I can’t get past a Christmas story full of swearing.

Give it a chance

In my opinion, the first chapter or two was slow moving as the author was world building. But I am happy I gave it a chance and listened! It was a cute story.

A Christmas story

A truly enjoyable listen. While it was on my plus account, it now is also in my wish list for future purchase.
The decidedly proper English and Australian accents, seemed spot on.
Rachael Tidd was perfect as the narrator,. the characters were clearly defined. Her range in voices, simply amazing. Honestly Rachael she brought the story to life.

Characters I enjoyed spending a few hours with.

Christmas is tough for some of us, but this lovely Holiday romance took me out of my own life for a few hours and let me hitch a ride with these quirky, loveable people. If you're looking for a bit of sweet and funny escapism this book is perfect. I always hesitate to leave reviews because I'm not a highbrow reader. I can't tell you anything about the craft of writing or if something is in iambic pentameter. I just like a good story and I think this is a good story. I loved the narrator. She's got a nice voice and had great pacing. When I was listening as I went about my day I was totally absorbed. Did the dishes without really noticing. What a gift. I hate doing dishes. Looking forward to reading more from Kate Forster and if I see Rachel Tidd as the narrator of anything else I come across I'll definitely have a look.

Also enjoyed the blend of traditional and non traditional ways of celebrating. Nice touch. Not everyone does the holidays the same.

Charming and funny!

I hesitated in choosing this novella because I find a lot of Christmas-themed stories to be pretty cheesy, but this was charming. Interesting characters who behaved believably, and laugh out loud funny. Great narration - what is it about a regional British accent that makes everything more clever and funny? This is perfect to listen to while putting up the Christmas decorations.

Not really worth listening to, but passes the time

Really not great. Totally lacking any subtlety, the characters were very flat, and the main character quite unlikeable. The accent of the narrator was just a bit odd for a story set in the North of the UK. I listened through, but I'd never revisit this.

Such a heart warming book

I loved the romantic story in this book. I really connected with all the characters, i got the gist of the plot twist quite early on which was a little disappointing but I still loved it!

Starting listening this morning and couldn't stop, had to go to work, very inconvenient. Not sure how you managed it Kate Forster but you tugged at my heart strings only an hour after the funniest line I've read in a long time!

Cute second chance romance that had me laughing out loud at times, groaning with frustration when people didn't communicate, but most of all had me smiling as I listened.

Good fun, realistic romance.

I loved the angst of the main characters - the (incorrect) assumptions they kept making about each other and their own insecurities - was very realistic and true to "real life romance".

Fun, easy, feelgood story.
If you want a short story that you don't have to think too hard about, that will chill you out and not work you up - this is a good one to fill that space.
