Publisher's Summary

When an Italian assassin's body is found floating in a barrel in Victorian London's East End, enquiry agent Cyrus Barker and his assistant Thomas Llewelyn are called in to investigate. Soon corpses begin to appear all over London, each accompanied by a Mafia Black Hand note. As Barker and Llewelyn dig deeper, they become entangled in the vendettas of rival Italian syndicates - and it is no longer clear who is a friend or foe.

Loved this one as well!

Will Thomas, I hope you have several more books planned in this series! I have thoroughly enjoyed each one! Please continue to have Antony Ferguson read this series! I especially like the way he does Barker's voice!

Still a GREAT series!

Barker and Llewelyn, come head-to-head with the Sicilian mob. We see the brutal tactics of fear and intimidation by the Mafia as Barker and Llewelyn work to prevent the Mafia murdering and bulling their way into London. We get the excitement, intrigue and historical content we have come to expect from this Will Thomas series.

Love Llewelyn, but #5 leaves much to be desired

I was hooked by these characters and the wonderful voices created by Antony since book one. I plowed through the others and was completely to purchase"extra" credits so that I could purchase them all in a row. Unfortunately, this story was too simple and left me feeling cheated because the others were all so well crafted and intriguing. This one felt like the author didn't have time to develop the complexities that would likely come to London after the first suppression of the Mafia. It seemed like this was half the length that it should have been.

excellent!

I like a mystery. I like history. This series combines both. The narration would be difficult to top. You learn more about the characters in each book and there is even a peke. One of the main characters was the son of missionaries in China so it makes perfect sense. Each book is at least as enjoyable as the one before so start at the beginning of the series and listen. You won't be disappointed.

Favorite new series!

Being a historical fiction and crime/mystery fan, these books are what I like best about reading. Period detail, true events in the background, and wonderfully interesting characters who are developing nicely and fit together a la Sherlock and Holmes, but quite different in all the right ways. Brilliantly brought to life by the narrator! Keep them coming!!!

The best yet

Thomas & Ferguson hit the mark again, this time adding a little bit more - but not focused on - personal info about Barker & Llewellen. The way this story ended could be the end of the series but leaves it open and obvious about how Barker regards his trainee.

Not for me - DNF

It's rare that I don't finish an audiobook. I don't tend to return them unless I get to the very end and think "my time has been wasted and I seek recompense!" This book got 1 star overall because the description of the one star is "not for me" and that's how I feel.

This is the very first time I've returned a book because I couldn't finish it. I don't think it's any fault of the author or the narrator, but I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't for me. I'm far more of a cozy mystery or modern thriller listener, so a crime drama from days of old that wasn't cozy or fun or (for me) interesting just didn't work out.

I'm so glad so many others loved this book, and I wish all involved well! I'm not the target, but I'm glad it's found so many who love it.

Difficult to follow because of the narration

I tried. It was very difficult to know who was talking which disrupted the flow of the story. Most of the voices were too similar even though they had accents but the accents were, well just okay. The French accents were good and I only knew it was Blake talking when the story said it was him speaking. Otherwise, i had to continually ask who was talking when names weren’t used. Really, I tried to stick to listening but gave up. It may have had a good storyline but it was too much of a struggle figuring out who was saying what to listen.
