Publisher's Summary

By fate and fire, a being four millennia old is reborn in Mali in a short story of contemporary African life and ancient secrets by the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of the Binti trilogy.

Issaka has returned home to Timbouctou and a devastating al-Qaeda raid. His only hope for survival is Faro, a stunning, blue-beaded supernatural entity who rises free from the flames of her imprisoning book as it burns. Compelled to follow Faro, Issaka is opening his eyes to their shared history and the ancestral wisdom of his own past.

Nnedi Okorafor’s The Black Pages is part of Black Stars, a multi-dimensional collection of speculative fiction from Black authors. Each story is a world much like our own. Read or listen to them in a single sitting.

Favorite narrator in the collection

I loved the story, it’s a world I absolutely want more of! And the writing was so well done. But honestly I’m a little in love with Naomi’s voice after this. In the beginning I actually struggled to focus on the content of the words because I was so memorised by the sound of her voice. I’m hoping she narrates more books soon!

Uneven mix of the modern world and mysticism

The beginning of the story seemed confusing and disjointed. As things progress it begins to make more sense, but I never quite liked how the circumstances of the characters were presented. The premise was interesting but the execution seemed lacking.

Boring

I’m glad this book did not cost me a credit. This book was not as interested as I had hoped. There was a lot of potential for greatness.

Brief and powerful

I love Nnedi’s ability to drop you right into the center of the story. Brief and yet leaving me feeling both satisfied AND wanting to hear more.

good short story. Eye opening

I appreciated this book as it brings to the forefront of the mind impact of religious extremism on the preservation or erasure of a culture's history. the narration was good but it was hard to distinguish the difference in characters

Good but…

I loved this story! We have a responsibility to carry the mantle but at what cost?

My only quarrel is that the end kind of lingered on too long.

Never disappointed by Nnedi Okorafor

A story of the brutal loss of a family and a country’s history and culture at the hands of religious bigots—and the release of the trapped spirit who ultimately proves to be a saviour.

The short story format makes me wish this was a longer piece of work.

Short and engaging

I loved the concept of the story but I felt it could have been longer.
I would of liked to know more about the keepers of the books and how they came by them.
The book was read very well and the speakers voice kept me focused and immersed in the story.

Sublime

This story speaks of a fear of the near future of Africa and also the courage of the African's who carry the will of the ancestors who have come, lived and left but remain watching over their descendants and the courage they instill in us to to pass the torch to the next generations and preserve our knoeledege and wisdom.
The distracttive power that is seeping in current Africa couldn't have been so well articulated, it reeks with malice and bears and ugly blade that I will be cut off ans buried before its too late.
I have never loved a book like this. so short yet so full of every bit of word that needed to be said.
Thank you.
