Publisher's Summary

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.

Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva's. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.

Very Difficult Listen.

Authors narrating their own work is rarely successful, as this attempt proves. I found it impossible to listen to the story, as the author gabbled his way through the narration. I'm returning the book unfinished. Leave it to the trained professionals please.

Offensive Irish Accent

DNF. I'm returning this book because the author decided, in all his good wisdom... to narrate his book in an Irish accent. The sort of accent Americans think all Irish people speak with. Take Tom Cruises accent from Far and Away, Yes... its that Offensive. And it not only the accent, this book is full of Irish clichés that grate and irritate every bit of my culture, we are rolling in our Graves.

a real gem and highly recomend

brilliant narration - you can really tell that the author is reading it as every character is brought to life by the voice. the world is good and so are the characters but what really makes the book is the tone of the narration and the unique voice that the writing has - making even the most mundane elements of the story a pleasure to read and very funny in places. only slight problem I had was the way the book ended - it didnt feel suitably climactic for the epic story leading up to it and was a little rushed. that said really recommend the book - its original and funny and you wont regret the credit.

Exactly what I hoped it would be

The author keeps things simple with a linear narrative told from a first person perspective - and just concentrates on telling a rollicking good story, which he duly delivers. Not massively ground breaking - but there are some nice ideas and wry humour which combine to make this an entertaining and amusing read. I'll be looking out for the sequel.

Very enjoyable

Very enjoyable book.Would definitely recommend it. Thought the author did a good job narrating it and didn’t find his Irish accent annoying. (speaking as an Irish person myself).

Great characters lift a fairly entertaining tale

The narrator was excellent..first time I've heard an Irishman doing it but a welcome change.

This is a story that starts strong and keeps up a thrilling pace. When the mystery is revealed, it comes as a welcome surprise.
The characters are what makes the story stand out from your regular fantasy books. There is great humour throughout and to the end.
I gave it charitable four stars because although the story loses its way towards the end, it wraps up the tale in a satisfactory way
Good effort and well worth a try.

Hmmmm

I did enjoy this and would recommend! That said, I thought the ending was rushed and I could do without the bard stuff. It was a super fun read though

What a great story!

Let’s start with the narration! It’s probably a bit like the Marmite analogy, either love it or hate it! I have to say the accent grew on me and within 5 or 6 chapters felt the Irish accent really did add something to the story. The story was imaginative and is extremely well crafted, with the main characters well developed and likeable! It sits on top of the fantasy books I have listened to and read. This is exceptional and kept me listening and wanting more! Fantasy at its best!

A ripping yarn.

An American doing an Irish accent, a narrator who is also the author. That sounds like a sure-fire recipe for disaster. But....he pulls it off. Really enjoyed both the story and the performance. Thanks.

Brilliant! Buy it!

This is one of the best and most original books I've ever read. It was a great adventure, told from a wickedly brilliant and mischievous perspective of a professional thief, with a system of magic and other fantasy concepts and creatures that worked perfectly. So much fun from start to finish. Here's a tip --- reduce the speed to 90% because he talks quite fast. I couldn't catch up initially, and it was a bit frustrating, but when I reduced the playback speed everything fell into place. 5 Stars nevertheless. Excellent.

A rollicking good yarn

One of the best audio books I've ever listened to and one heck of a story. Had me laughing, wincing and bawling my eyes out in all the right places and a damn more unexpected ones. Christopher is clearly a masterful story teller and has the telling of his own tales down to a fine art. Brilliant.

Wow! Christopher Buehlman has some chops!

What a performance! Feels like the story was made for an Audio book, the narration just flows naturally, and the author clearly has an incredible grasp of drama (narrated by the author who is also a playwright, poet and dramatist... and it shows). I've only heard a couple of Audio books that are on par with this. And it's a cracking good tale too. Get it and enjoy.

Amazing author, superb narration

Incredible, original story combined with fantastic storytelling. This is a must listen. I followed some advice from other reviews and turned the playback speed down to 90% which helped me with the speed/accent (but I do love the accent!).

Bring on the next two!

I’ve always enjoyed fantasy but this took it to a higher level, the way Christopher drives his story is just as beautiful as the way he narrates. Every character has such a life to them, you feel every emotion and decision. Can’t wait for the next
