Publisher's Summary

The Wilderlands are said to contain many dangers. On most maps, the area remains blank and only the bravest of travelers will venture beneath its canopy. For monsters roam these woods, which made it the perfect place for a legendary swordmaster to disappear from the world for a time and raise a child.

For 17 years Holviti of Yuutan rased Duren in those woods, training in the sword, hunting the creatures that called it home, but as is the case with all young men, there comes a day when one must leave his fathers home and make their own mark on the world. Duren had no idea what awaited him in the world, but he was definitely looking forward to finding out. Sword in hand and Holviti’s lessons in his head he set out, thinking he was prepared for anything in the world. Up until the point he met her that was….

Author’s note: This book contains an overpowered main character, graphic violence, creative language, sexual innuendos, and quite a few moments that cracked my creative consultant up. You have been warned....

Awesome

This is basically a slice of life story with an OP MC since there is no big evil or anything like that, just an overpowered swordsman. looking for challenges and duels, and I ended up enjoying the Romance on the story even though the fiance was getting on my nerves towards the end with how controlling and overbearing she was acting. And I hope this gets a second book. Now for the narration, it wasn't bad, but the quality of the audio kinda was since you can hear a slight echo and a soft clicking, but I got used to it by chapter 3 or 4.

I enjoyed the experience.

this book was a laid back experience. The very OP MC Goes out into the world to make a name for himself. I didn't find many problems with this story. Other then the Narrator deciding to record the whole story in his bathroom.

Love It

I'm usually pretty critical in my reviews but I can't say anything bad here. Reminds me of one of my favorite anime, Katanagatari. Jame's reading is a little flat at the start which makes it hard to follow but it gets so much better. Read it. Please write more Dugas!

Loved it.

Funniest book of the year for me so far. Had me laughing non stop.
I like the book, nothing ground breaking and it is kinda cliche but I really love the execution, the way the romance side of the story gets brutally shoved in it makes the story wholesome and rather enjoyable.
10/10 would listen to it again and again.

A fun lighthearted novel.

The story of a young man who wants nothing more than to have a good duel. when it comes to social grace he is as blunt as a squished mountain. When it comes to swords, there is none better except maybe The legendary Sword Master who also happens to be his Old Man.

This story ticked all my boxes for a lighthearted novel, duels, sword fights, monsters, misunderstandings, superb supporting characters.

The Narrator ended with "end of book one" so I'm actually really excited to see what other shanigians Duren is able to get up to.

I could be wrong, I'll have to listen again but there were a few times I thought I could hear the narrator trying not to laugh. I know I was.

I liked it

this was the exact type of romantic antics I was looking for in a fantasy setting the narrating performance could have been better but I liked it and the story was really gory but awesome and detailed in the fights so that was good

Sword & Sorcery Lite and Fun

I liked the story. Overall it was a little lite on details about the world. The MC calling his adopted father “Old Man” constantly felt a little unnatural at times but, not entirely unbelievable. It was a good adventure story with a moderate amount of romance, lots of fighting, fantasy races, lots of fighting, comradely ribbing and did I mention lots of fighting? I think it would have been better if the MC wasn’t the definition of O.P. but if I were looking for reality I’d be listening to history books. If you’re looking for something that has a happy ending and last long enough to get you through a shift without being sleep inducing, I think you will like this story. It’s well done.

Overall Quite Enjoyable

This was overall an enjoyable book. Unfortunately, there were a couple of detractors. Firstly, the narrator sounds exactly like Data from Star Trek, a humanoid robot with no understanding of human emotion. To make things worse, it sounds like he recorded everything in his bathroom. However, the narration does get better as the story progresses, or at least, you get used to it.

My only other complaint is that this is obviously a very sword-centric story and the author tries to sound knowledgeable about sword fighting and often comes across more like a teacher than a story teller. This might not be so bad if his knowledge didn't come from video games and anime. Again, this also wouldn't be bad if the subject wasn't approached so seriously. I suppose, however, that most of the listeners of a book like this will have that same knowledge base so, really, it probably doesn't matter.

Despite those niggling flaws, the plot moves along well and the characters are great. I was rarely bored and was always eager to find out what happens next. The plot itself isn't very complex at all, but the journey through it was enjoyable and entertaining, and at the end of the day, what else could you ask for?

Character issues

The story itself was quite intriguing and awesome honestly, the whole premise of it is amazing and other than the female he somehow gets engaged too, who in my opinion ruins pretty much the whole book whenever she is present. Is a rather great story.

Now the narrator has two issues, 1. It sounds like he is recording in a bathroom or somewhere there is a lot of empty space and 2. The female lead sounds more masculine than the MC and most voices don’t differ too much other than that he did a good job

I gave it a 4/5 which was honestly generous considering the audio quality and the terrible female lead the only saving grace was the actual story and concept of the book was great, I won’t be getting the second one as Lycinia or whatever her name is honestly kills the book for me other wise it’s terrific
