Publisher's Summary

New York City is thrown into chaos by the assaults of the Bone Collector, a serial kidnapper and killer who gives the police a chance to save his victims from death by leaving obscure clues. The cops go to Lincoln Rhyme, an ex-NYPD forensics expert left paralysed after an accident on the job. Rhyme reluctantly postpones his ambitions towards suicide and puts together a forensic investigation team, enlisting as his eyes and ears young police officer Amelia Sachs.

Well I'll be damned!

It's been years since a crime story twist got me like this one. It's great when a book makes your jaw drop in surprise.
The narration of the character Delrey was terrible, but the rest were good.

Well Worth it.

I’ve always loved the movie and knew the book would be better but the performance of the narrator made it an incredible book.
Fantastic character distinction in his voice, I’ll listen to this again and again.

Excellent performance

There are so many characters and the narrator had got a different voice or each and maintained them throughout. Did not particularly like his female voices but it did give them definition for their characters. Story was great.

Please give us some language options

Within about 2 1/2 minutes I had to switch it off. I couldn't stand listening to his drooling Texan accent. it's a shame because my brother recommended this book and he said it was great but I just can't listen to it. does anyone know if it is possible to get a refund.

Cracking listen brilliantly read

This is the first Jefferey Deaver that I have either read or listened to, and it definitely won't be my last. If you like Greg Hurwitz and Michael Connelly, you'll love this. It is very fast paced and it ties all the ends up nicely. I do like the author to tell me the end and not leaving me guessing... after all it's the author's story and I am paying him, so I want a proper end.. even if I don't like it.
Jeff Harding narrates this brilliantly, (one of my favourite narrators and I often pick a story simply because he's the narrator.) I love all the voices, he does, especially the black policewoman who cracks me up... he's brilliant at getting the sassy edge.
This story really keeps you guessing ... and even when you think you know who did what and why.. there was a brilliant twist I didn't see.
I don't want to spoil the plot but I can honestly say it's one of the best listens for a while, it got me through a lot of teadious jobs...
Highly recommended, I didn't want it to finish...

Great story but irritating narration

I have always loved this book but the narrator made every character grating, loud and to my ears just irritating. Rhyme and Amelia were just passable, but the rest were so hard to take.

Quadriplegic Ex-Cop in a fight. Fantastic

What a great book with a preposterous yet joyous storyline. This was my first encounter with Lincoln Rhyme and his cantankerous view on life.
I absolutely love this story and the characters were brilliant, Amelia was the perfect stooge to Lincoln and the supporting characters made for a high enjoyable yarn. It is a book where you just suspend any grip on reality you might have and just enjoy. Based on this book I will look forward to the rest of the series. Natation was perfect and built the characters extremely well
Very glad I read this as my first as it seems to set out its stall for future books

Narrator puts on awful voices!

I had to stop listening after 20 mins, the narrator puts on awful voices for each character! Very unnecessary

Gripping - but

As ever, with detective stories, the most unlikely person is the author’s choice of perpetrator

Good if a bit farfetched

This was a good book, classic thriller. Fast-paced and zany with good characters and good dialogue. It's a bit like Monk or Psych but preceded them by a few years, and the quirk of the genius detective is paralysis.

My only major problems were story wrenching levels of surrealism. Beat cop becomes CSI. Beat cop becomes SWAT. Electron microscope and a spectrometer get set up in some guy's bedroom for basically no reason. 5 minutes to high tide is appreciably different to high tide. Victim's left to suffer excruciating pain for fear of compromising crime scene. It goes on.

If you can get over the sheer ridiculousness of many aspects of the police work and the crazy intimacy achieved in a few days by some characters it's a decent story. I don't know if I'll bother with the sequel though. Maybe after a few palate cleansing stories.

The narration wasn't anything to write home about either. Most of the women were a bit breathy and the children were somewhere between caricature and cartoonish.

Mesmerising

A chilling but exciting story that gripped and held you. Exceptional performance by the reader with each character clearly defined.

Loved the story but

I found the accents jarring but otherwise the performance was great and the story is one I keep coming back to.

Excellent story

Excellent story, really enjoyed it and made even better by the fabulous narrating of Jeffrey Harding
