Publisher's Summary
In the spring of 1995, Nate Cartwright has lost everything: His parents are dead, his older brother wants nothing to do with him, and he's been fired from his job as a journalist in Washington, DC. With nothing left to lose, he returns to his family's summer cabin outside the small mountain town of Roseland, Oregon, to try to find some sense of direction.
The cabin should be empty.
It's not.
Inside is a man named Alex. And with him is an extraordinary little girl who calls herself Artemis Darth Vader.
Artemis, who isn't exactly as she appears.
Soon it becomes clear that Nate must make a choice: let himself drown in the memories of his past, or fight for a future he never thought possible.
Because the girl is special. And forces are descending upon them who want nothing more than to control her.

Another amazing story
TJ Klune is a master storyteller. He has the ability to write in many different genres without losing that “thing” that makes his books so special. The Bones Beneath My Skin bring two broken men together in extraordinary circumstances and together along with a young girl bonds are made that can’t be broken.
Greg Trembly did an outstanding job narrating this beautiful book.

One of a kind
The Bones Beneath My Skin was different from the books I've previously read by TJ Klune. Not in a bad way, it was just different.
Nate Cartwright has had some changes to his life lately; being fired from his job, losing both of his parents in a murder/suicide. Subsequently inheriting an old truck and a cabin in the remote parts of Oregon. Deciding to take some time to himself to re-evaluate his life, he sets off to the cabin. Only when he gets there he encounters a wounded man and a young girl. The man is pointing a gun at him, demanding to know who he is and who he’s working for. The girl says her name is Artemis Darth Vader. They are obviously on the run and in hiding. They are the strangest pair he ever met, and they will both irrevocably change his life.
This book is a mix of the mundane stuff; getting to know each other, preparing food, and just every day stuff. There’s also bursts of excitement and suspense when the men after Art catches up to them, when they run and fight. Interwoven are also a few flashbacks, learning the story of Art and Alex, how they met and connected. How they escaped. I can’t really tell you if it all fit or not, because it did – and it didn’t. And in some strange Klune way that was okay, that worked for the story anyway. (Can you tell I’m a bit confused?)
There is not a lot of romance in this book, hardly any if I’m being honest. It’s a fight against enemies, known and unknown. Expanding and broadening of minds. That’s not to say there wasn’t love in this story, because there was – and a lot of it. The three of them, no matter how different they might be; became a family. Formed bonds that couldn’t be broken by neither time nor space.
I love Greg Tremblay’s narrations. He’s a terrific narrator and extremely talented. With such a wide range of voices he easily distinguishes between the characters. Even his female voices sound credible and not over the top as some do. Tremblay delivers, it’s a given. Then there were parts, endings of certain chapters that were, to put it mildly, abrupt. I’m not used to that with Tremblay's narrations. It's usually such a smooth and easy listen. Now I found myself rewinding trying to figure out if I’d missed something. To the point where I actually did look it up in the print version just to make sure I wasn’t missing something. It threw me off and out of the story and made me focus on the narration instead of the story. I know that Klune has a particular way of writing, he is fond of abrupt changes, it’s not the first time he’s done this trick. This time though it threw me for a loop at times and it took some time for me to get back into the action. It wasn’t all the time, or many for that matter, but the few times it did happen it was noticeable.
The Bones Beneath My Skin wasn’t a book that produced many feelings in me one way or another. Sure, I smiled at times at Art’s antics and questions, but that’s about it. Otherwise I was just listening along, enjoying the moment for what it was. Sadly I can’t say that the times where I had to stop listening (due to RL) I was anxious to resume listening, but was perfect fine with waiting until life permitted me to pick up my earbuds and start listening again. So while I did enjoy this story, it probably won’t be one I’m likely to listen to again.

it just amazes me how TJ Klune can go from romantic comedy, to horror, to sci fi, then back, then start all over again. This book kept me from beginning to end. I'm not one to talk about specifics but once again he brought a "kid" into the picture that just melted my heart.

excellent story and narration
I love TJ Klune. His writing is poignant, funny, and emotionally engaging. This story was no exception. The characters are well developed and fleshed out and events are portrayed very well. There is a sense of excitement and adventure throughout the narrative. I wouldn't have minded if the ending was written differently but it was good. I wasn't disappointed but I wanted something more. Tremblay is excellent as always. His performance most definitely enhances the work. I'm sure it would have taken me much much longer to finish this if it wasn't for his performance. He could read the alphabet and I would still listen with bated breath.

Really great
I stopped reading LGBTQ lit because it depressed me . TJ Klune has don’t somethig rare in this work . He’s made me read , enjoy and want more of the characters in a sci fi / ufo-esque read. I am not the type who would ever choose that genre. He weaved the lives of the main characters together so well that he had me swallowing the idea of shapeshifters. I’ve read several of his books and they’ve all been really good . I’d highly recommend any of them .

Totally different to the ‘usual’ TJK stories but excellent audiobook all the same!
TJK always has the ability to transport the reader/listener to that magical place and time, which is a very rare quality.
I must admit, it did take me personally a lot longer to listen to this audiobook than normal as it was more complex and the details that TJK goes into does take a lot more concentration than most authors of this genre, but definitely worth every bit of it.
TJK has a great knack to envisage the world as a whole and seeing not only the awful tragedies, devastation, but the ability to see the beauty within.
I never use quotes from the story or use spoilers, because to me, that’s exactly what they do, spoil the element of the book, but I can honestly say, that if you are a TJK fan, and have loved his other books, (such as the ‘Tales From Verania’ series and ‘The House In The Cerulean Sea’), you WILL love this!!
I was, (as usual), so moved by the storyline toward the very end that it had me welling up with tears 😭 and I’d be very surprised if any listener to the audiobook would not do the same - equally, TJK with the excellent narration by Greg Tremblay had me laughing too.
So not all gloom, but I highly recommend to all TJK fans old and new 😁🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Sorry to say, not a big hit with me...
Well TJ, you chose very wisely in asking the awesome Mr T to narrate this story...I'm just sorry that I didn't love it [the story] as much as I'd hoped I would.
I liked the inclusion of Big Eddie and Benji from Into This River I Drown, and of course the mention of Green Creek, BUT I can't honestly say that this story was a big hit with me, and it took forever to get into. I didn't like Nate very much at all...and I have to say that for an investigative journalist, he was pretty clueless sometimes. He spent most the story in a huge pity party for one, and didn't take a lot of notice of what was going on around him. Alex was just...scary, and yes, I get that he was protecting Art and couldn't take any unnecessary chances, but growly and gruff for the whole of the read surely wasn't necessary??
My favourite character was of course the wonderfully named Artemis Darth Vader. Greg's interpretation of Art was just amazing cos he's pretty good at female voices anyhoo, but he really got on board with the highs and lows of Art's 'life', and the enthusiasm with which he voiced Art's new-found fascination with [and appreciation of] bacon was a joy to listen to :-).
All in all, I'd award 5 stars for Greg's narration and 4 stars for the story. My fave sci-fi type read of TJ's is still BURN.

I read the ebook a few years ago and loved it, I didn’t realise an audio version was available until recently and thought I’d try it as I love this narrator.
I’m so very glad I did as Greg brought this wonderful story to life.

What it means to be human…
I adored this book. Nate, Alex and of course Artemus Darth Vader. The narration was perfect. I laughed, I cried. I didn’t want it to end. It’s a story of love and hope and doing the right thing. One of TJ Klune’s best.

Wonderful!
Greg Tremblay is one of my favourite audiobook narrators and when I found out he had narrated TJ Klune's self-published book about aliens, I knew I had to listen! This was such a soft and sad story, but with Artemis Darth Vader, it was made light and sweet and funny. Highly recommend!

OMG
If I could rate this 10 stars I would. I LOVE TJ Klune's books. All of them. I'm won't critique it. I wouldn't do it justice. Others do it so well. A great story with charming characters. And as for the narration.....exceptional. Thank you both for entertaining me for 12 hours and 55 minutes!
