Publisher's Summary

“When I become mayor, we become mayor.”

Ras Baraka’s famous words speak to exactly who he is as a leader - a fiercely loyal member of his community. In this innovative and ground-breaking Audible Original, hear how Baraka - the mayor of Newark, New Jersey - grew from spoken-word artist to school principal to successful politician. Mixing prose and poetry, musical interludes and powerful soliloquies, Ras explores his life in-depth, including stories about his father, poet Amiri Baraka, and his personal encounters with jazz singer Nina Simone and hip-hop superstar Lauryn Hill - who famously featured him on her debut album. This is the story of how one man found his voice - and how each of us can find our own calling.

Baraka’s story begins at home in Newark. He was raised in a house of art and politics, passion and provocation. His father was one of the most influential and controversial poets of the 1970s and filled his home with ardent activists, lively debates, and conversations unlike any on his block - a powerful combination that influences him to this day.

Baraka’s story is a deeply personal history that reflects a generation and a movement, vividly capturing a tumultuous period of political and social struggle and ultimately, boundless hope and renewal. The tale is co-authored by acclaimed writer Jelani Cobb, a staff writer at The New Yorker and a professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. Experience this exclusive, first-of-its kind telling of Baraka's journey from poet to principal to peacemaker, through his own powerful, inspiring words.

There are few stories more compelling or more intimately told than those soul-baring memoirs that seek not just to recount the experiences of one's own life, but to draw some greater commentary on the big existential questions. What does it mean to be human? What is our purpose in being here? How much of who we are is purely self-determined? Exceptional in both their prose and narration, these listens represent a few of the year's best memoirs.

We need more Barakas in our life....

I was having a bad day and I needed something positive to start my day over again. I happened to stumble across the book featured for the day. I couldn't stop listening. I too was a product of the Civil Rights movement. And it seems that the struggle is even harder. Baraka inspired me to continue to impact the world one community at a time. I would love to one day meet the Mayor and learn how determination and resistance can overcome any obstacles. I have a small grassroots non-profit organization trying to impact the undeserved community in the state of Delaware. This book made my day. Thank you 😊 💓 ☺

Baraka is a sellout

When you push the liberal agenda and you are aware that agenda doesn’t advance your community such as forcing people to follow rules that may harm them, you’re a sellout. Such a revolutionary, you’re the mayor if I’m mayor, but pushing division. I don’t think this audible is genuine in it’s entirety, and it’s sad!

Outstanding leader

Revolutionaries are real people that cause change in the world. Mr Baraka is one of the few, the proud leaders of this nation.

Historically important marking todays relivence..

A clear example of carrying on, certifying, and extending his parents ideological foot steps into the present day!
The music behind the story telling allowed for a natural flow, and the poetry was Right On!!

Unable to connect!

I couldn’t connect to the book. Why is there music in the background. The music is too loud and it’s distracting.

Better than most. I’m glad it was on sale.

I saw this on sale for about $1 and figured why not. I had no clue who he was, and I learned a few things about NJ, too.
I liked for the most part he stayed positive about lifting black voices as opposed to suppressing and blaming the white person. Oh, he still had some blame to lay, and on those topics I agreed with most. His narration was truly engaging. I’d listen to him over and over again. Actually, I do hope he narrates again. It would be wonderful to hear him do something in the fictional genre.
