Publisher's Summary

In 1942, Eva is forced to flee Paris after the arrest of her father, a Polish Jew. Finding refuge in a small mountain town, she begins forging identity documents for Jewish children escaping to neutral Switzerland. But erasing people comes with a price, and along with a mysterious, handsome forger named Rémy, Eva realises she must find a way to preserve the real names of the children who are too young to remember their own identities.

When Rémy disappears and the resistance cell they work for is betrayed, the records they keep in The Book of Lost Names become even more crucial to remembering the truth....

A present-day discovery of the book leaves researchers fascinated by its origins and desperate to decipher its codes. Only Eva holds the answer, but will she have the strength to face old memories and help reunite those lost during the war?

Very disappointing

The so called heroine was so pathetic it was painful to listen to this book . At the same time the narrator did nothing to make minimise the pathetic’ statements she was making about everything that was happening was all her fault . Her mother was also just as annoying anyone would think she was elderly instead of being in her mid forties and the totally out of touch with reality . It was an act of bravery to finish the book

The end was so unexpected and made it for me

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Holocaust novels are never an easy read, but this take, although tragic, was just so heartwarming. I have never read a book by this author, but I look forward to picking up another this summer. I would have scored this book as a four, but with that ending I had to bump it to a five, something I do rarely 💜

Touching WW2 story

Really nicely written story set in WW2, nothing more to add here as it’s all there in the summary.

The characters were well drawn and believable, I personally engaged more as I knew the areas in haute Savoie, but equally had I not it’s still very good.

Narration was excellent both male and female voices, without any stupid accents for the French or Germans characters.

Highly recommend if you like a good WW2 storyline.

Can't understand the 5-star reviews

I bought this book thinking the subject matter was interesting. The many 5star reviews convinced me. Such a disappointment. This is the story of a young jewish woman who had a sheltered upbringing in Paris prior to WW2. She manages to escape from Paris after her father is taken away and makes it to a small village in Vichy France where she becomes a 'master forger'.
The writing is poor and cliched; At one point she says her love interest has 'lost puppy' eyes and as she walks away from a German soldier, she feels his "eyes boring into her back'. When the ultimate villain of the piece makes an appearance, 'the shadows wrapped around him', - (ahh! must be a baddie!) -there are countless other indications in the narrative that he is not to be trusted, so it's no surprise when he is revealed as a traitor. The surprise ending was no surprise to me, it was just part of the romance that comes to dominate the narrative.
Characterisation is really poor; there is no sense that this young woman lived in perpetual terror (as any normal person in that position would have done); she braves a number of totally ludicrous adventures -always coming out alive and apparently unperturbed. Her mother is stupid and irritating beyond belief. 'Our plucky heroine' leads a group of small children to Switzerland but there is no tension in their escape- at no point is the reader on edge as she escapes. The whole escape story is overtaken by girly ramblings about her love interest that is unaffected by the 'reality' of their situation.
The absurd ending was just a trite as much of the rest of the book.

Amazing concept. Thought it was true.

Seems to be a dearth of novels being written about WWII. Some of them are very similar in plot. I absolutely love & respect what they contain, & sadly the injustices & persecution of races & religions was true. May we never forget. The truth is so shocking and distressing to read. What brave people these were. Prepare for tests.
Did find the other voices very grating, & annoying.

Highly recommend

I really enjoyed this story. It had me crying with happiness and shouting in disbelief. Though the story is fiction the lives and troubles of the characters feels so real.

Magical mix of hope, despair and history

This story has the roller-coaster of emotions that is inevitably associated with holocaust fiction, happiness, courage, crushing devastation and hope. It draws you in with such ease that I listen to it all in 2 days. The narrators had wonderful animation and accents. Amazing!
