Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half brother, Ben, didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up—to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this?—he’s not there. The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has.

Story
Helen’s idyllic life - handsome architect husband, gorgeous Victorian house, and cherished baby on the way - begins to change the day she attends her first prenatal class. There, she meets Rachel, an unpredictable single mother-to-be who doesn’t seem very maternal: She smokes, drinks, and professes little interest in parenthood. Still, Helen is drawn to her. Maybe Rachel just needs a friend. And to be honest, Helen’s a bit lonely herself. At least Rachel is fun to be with. She makes Helen laugh, invites her confidences, and distracts her from her fears.

It reads like a traveloge
This story has a romantic, atmospheric start, but the constant switching between time lines and characters POV and changes in locale began to wear thin. It reads like a traveloge. After a lot of drama and too much plotting, the story is wrapped up much too quickly. It felt rushed and unsatisfying.

meh till Alice
narration was the best. her different "voices" weren't awesome, but as good as any, I suppose. the story was pretty slow going till Alice comes on the scene- everything about WWII was so good, I felt like I was right there. I get why the earlier parts were so obviously important to the story. tye "turn of phrase" as they say, was stupendous. ms.foley is perfection and painting a picture with words. I've read others by her that are great all the way thru. this one isn't bad, I hope I don't miss speak. as you go along it's kind of: ok, ok, meh, meh, ok, oooohhhh okaaay, wow, oh my! wow, oh wow. I guess the earlier parts are a means to an end. all in all, I'm not positive I'd recommend it to a friend.

Terrible ending!
I have enjoyed 2 otter Lucy Foley books immensely, however for me, this one had the trifecta being of mystery romance and history. This would have been a 5 star rating until the the story reached the very depressing and sad account of Alice’s ww2 imprisonment. Now that being part of the climax was essentially for the heart pull but then fell flat with the very abrupt ending. We’re left having to read between the lines that there may have been communication between Alice and Tom after Kate first met Alice. At the very least, it should have ended with the story of how Oliver and Kate’s relationship solidified since they were still together years later. It’s almost as though the writer was tired of the book and finished before the story was done being told. Very disappointing!

Good, but not as good as other Foley novels
While I enjoyed this book, I must admit it seemed to miss some of the mystery and suspense of her other novels. It is however a charming, though sad, love story. The narration. however, is very good. Well worth the listen.

wanted to like it but wouldn't recommend it
wanted to really like it, but found it very detailed in some areas and other areas not enough info is given so it lacked balance. I had issues worth some voices especially Oliver's which was nasal and grating. It made me not like him. the ending was rushed and poorly told. Will not recommend this book.

Well written, but too much story? Not enough too?
This was well written and very different in format from Lucy Foley's other books. While the book was quite lengthy, somehow there was both too much story and not enough fleshed out with some of story line. I might have enjoyed two "twin" books instead of one big book. Also the relationship between the young people was cute but the tension felt forced.

Dreamy Story
I like a story that transports me to other places and times as this book does so well. This would be a great book for a book club because it makes you think about actions and consequences. How life may have been different for the characters had they made different choices. Eventually, you can reflect on how choices of relatives before you shaped your life. The narration is superb.

Well told story with a great sense of place
This is a deeply felt, well told story that unwinds slowly, but not too slowly. I loved the descriptions of the places in which the narrative occurs, and greatly loved the characters. Very well done.
