Story
To the uninitiated, Savannah shows only her bright face and genteel manner. Those who know her well, though, can see beyond her colonial trappings and small-city charm to a world where witchcraft is respected, Hoodoo is feared, and spirits linger. Mercy Taylor is all too familiar with the supernatural side of Savannah, being a member of the most powerful family of witches in the South. Despite being powerless herself, of course. Having grown up without magic of her own, in the shadow of her talented and charismatic twin sister, Mercy has always thought herself content.

According to the elders, that line is dead, leaving the clan vulnerable to the whims of superstitious villagers and the prejudices of fearmongering bishops. Ursule Orchière has been raised on stories of the great witches of the past. Connie Goodwin is an expert on America’s fractured past with witchcraft. A young, tenure-track professor in Boston, she’s earned career success by studying the history of magic in colonial America - especially women’s home recipes and medicines - and by exposing society's threats against women fluent in those skills. But beyond her studies, Connie harbors a secret: She is the direct descendant of a woman tried as a witch in Salem, an ancestor whose abilities were far more magical than the historical record shows.

One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

Not as good as the first book in the series
The plot meanders a bit as the author tried to wrap seemingly separate story lines together. This gives the book a bit of a piecemeal feel about this. And seemingly larger plot lines from the previous book don't play out with the same importance. It was not as cohesive as I would have liked.

Dark fantasy aficionados will love!
Sometimes there are those books that you don’t read alone in the dark...this is one of them. Recommended for dark fantasy lovers...
Sometimes there are those books that you don’t read alone in the dark...this is one of those books (or if you have an overactive imagination like me you don’t read it when you’re home alone at nighttime because every noise you hear...). There is a creep factor to it and it’s awesome! Would recommend to those who enjoy dark fantasy mixed with real world authenticity.
As with the first book in the series, there is a lot of information and stories happening via different characters viewpoints. The author has helped remedy any confusion in the story by placing a character list in the beginning of the book- use it, it’s your friend. This book was easier to follow than the first and faster-paced in some parts (in my opinion).
Minimal spoilers below……..

Similar to the first book: the story is a combo of fantasy mixed with real world authenticity, magic, witches, clairvoyant, New Orleans life style, young lovers, old lovers, betrayal, mystery.
Things that are new: Magic is disappearing from the world, while the witches of New Orleans are trying to keep it but are still scrambling from the previous events. The seven gates to the underworld are said to be located in New Orleans. Yes, there is more, but I’m not giving all the spoilers away. It’s hard to pick a favorite character because they each bring something unique to the story, but I look forward to seeing how Nathalie and Alice’s stories play out.
The details are once again phenomenal. The series has a darker tone and I would not recommend for those who are not into dark fantasy, faint of heart, or children.
I highly recommend the audio book. The audiobook adds to the story as the narrator did a brilliant job. I find myself reading the not so good reviews and saying “if only they would have listened to the audiobook”...

Read this in 2019
I suggest waiting until the trilogy is complete before reading. Otherwise it will be a long wait to understand this story. After reading this, I immediately looked to see when the next book would be published. I should have saved this on my wish list until 2019. But I love this author and his stories.

A dark fantasy
The Book of the Unwinding
Witches of New Orleans, Book 2
By: J. D. Horn
Narrated by: Sophie Amoss
I won this ebook from Goodreads giveaway so I spent the extra 1.99 for the audible version, (yes, this author doesn't shaft you with a tremendous amount of money on top of the book for the audible. Very few authors have a decent price still.)
I really enjoyed this dark fantasy with witches, demons, death, another realm, and mysteries. I didn't read book one first which I felt lost at first, I felt I was in a crowd and everyone knew a secret but me. Read book one first! I will have to go back and read it now and I may listen to the audible again, (and break my rule of not re-reading) so I can get the full effect of this book.
The narrator was spot on! Should you get the audible you won't be disappointed. Great performance!
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to letting me read your book, I know the review was voluntary but I feel I owe you that for the book and being decent enough to have low prices on your audible when buying with the book. Thanks again.
