Story
A queen now in exile as a traitor, Lara has watched Ithicana be conquered by her own father, helpless to do anything to stop the destruction. But when she learns her husband, Aren, has been captured in battle, Lara knows there is only one reason her father is keeping him alive: as bait for his traitorous daughter. And it is bait she fully intends to take. Risking her life to the Tempest Seas, Lara returns to Ithicana with a plan not only to free its king, but for liberating the Bridge Kingdom from her father’s clutches using his own weapons: the sisters whose lives she spared.

Publisher's Summary
What if you fell in love with the one person you’d sworn to destroy?
Lara has only one thought for her husband on their wedding day: I will bring your kingdom to its knees. A princess trained from childhood to be a lethal spy, Lara knows that the Bridge Kingdom represents both legendary evil - and legendary promise. The only route through a storm-ravaged world, the Bridge Kingdom controls all trade and travel between lands, allowing its ruler to enrich himself and deprive his enemies, including Lara’s homeland. So when she is sent as a bride under the guise of fulfilling a treaty of peace, Lara is prepared to do whatever it takes to fracture the defenses of the impenetrable Bridge Kingdom.
But as she infiltrates her new home - a lush paradise surrounded by tempest seas - and comes to know her new husband, Aren, Lara begins to question where the true evil resides. Around her, she sees a kingdom fighting for survival, and in Aren, a man fiercely protective of his people. As her mission drives her to deeper understanding of the fight to possess the bridge, Lara finds the simmering attraction between her and Aren impossible to ignore. Her goal nearly within reach, Lara will have to decide her own fate: Will she be the destroyer of a king or the savior of her people?

The beginning of an epic romance
Editorial Review
This book will trigger fellow fantasy romance lovers While I was in the midst of this book, every hour of my day that I was not listening felt like a wasted hour. Needless to say, I finished it pretty quickly. I will admit that in the beginning I hated our main character, Lara, because I thought she had done a terrible, terrible deed that I could not forgive her for. But when I found out how wrong I was, I loved Lara more fiercely than I had hated her. Narrators Lauren Fortgang and James Patrick Cronin were absolutely perfectly cast. Their performances elicited strong emotions in me, and I devoured the drama, romance, and knife-edged tension faster than I thought possible. It was completely delicious! —Melissa B., Audible Editor

This book was fantastic...until the end, if you can call it that. There wasn't an ending, just a lead in to another book BUT there isn't another book. I listened to almost 12 hours of this book to find out it leaves you hanging???

Cliff hanger!
I wish I hadn’t spent the hours on this very slow moving book for something, albeit predictably, to finally happen only for it to end in a cliffhanger.
I love Laura fortgang aka Tillie Hooper so I was happy to hear you narration for the most part. It was just really long and a lot of boring that could easily have been completed in one book if there was no true world building going to happen.
If you want to listen maybe wait till the series is done before you get this one. I’m annoyed I wasted so much time

Enjoyable Read
I loved the Malediction series and if it's possible I think I love this one even more. Finishing this book in less than 24 hours it's no surprise that this book has made it to the top of my list of best reads in 2018.
The characters were fun and witty, passionate and strong. First person point of view switching between Lara and Aren throughout the book, which I thought was expertly done. I really enjoyed the duel perspective, it certainly brought the story together delving into both their lives. The narrators were excellent as well, which made the book that much better.
The slow burning romance was quite refreshing, rather than the insta-love many books tend to have. I wouldn't say the romance was a huge part of the book, there was a lot of spying, deceit and manipulation. All in all it was an excellent balance of many things I love in a fantasy novel.
Lara held back throughout the book, not wanting to give away her secrets. It was nice at the end to see the full extent of her training and I am so excited to see her full potential in the next book.

A war book, not a romance. Awful
I might have misunderstood the glowing recommendation for this book. The review said there were parts the listener went back to over and over. I had a completely different experience. It was horrific. The death and misery were constant. I managed to keep slogging through waiting for good news or happy conclusion, disappointed again. Absurd violence. I want to get my money back.

Edge of my seat
I actually had to take a break when the story started to reach its climax because it was so thrilling I couldn’t handle my anxiety over the characters! Thrilling and well crafted; I can’t wait for the next book! (But this is NOT “teen” reading.)
Only negatives: The obnoxious thunder and rain sound effects between chapters are just annoying and distracting. And one of the minor male character’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard - luckily not frequently heard - he’s somehow both low and high pitched at the same time.

Ugh! Nooo U DIDN’T!!
I am so MAD right now! I can’t believe the Publisher ended the Book where they did! Noooooo!! (i say that with a SMILE, because I was so into the Book I didn’t want it to End! Much Less end where it did, which was a pretty awesome moment! A Perfect Cliff Hanger type moment where You know what comes next and can’t wait to hear it happen), There had better be a Book 2 when I go looking or I may go mad waiting for its release!...Yes!, This book is one of “those” books! It draws You into the tale. It has aspects of Betrayal, Murder, Violence, A Love Story, Fighting, War, Thrills, etc..., with such well written deep characters, that You will find Yourself caring about and siding with various characters. You will come to recognize that everything in this World is not neatly Black and White, but often a murky shade of Grey and then next moment fully White or Black, before it shifts back yet again to a deeper shade of dark Grey. That is what this story is like, it oscillates back and forth between coovb

Great story - listening challenge
I love this audible original and can not wait for the next edition. However it was disconcerting to hear the changes in the narration throughout the book. You develop a connection with the voices of the characters and to hear them change every few chapters interrupted the experience of the book.

Nothing here
So I have no idea how this book is getting good reviews. The world building is horrible, character development is non existent and the book has a terrible case of slide show syndrome.
First thing I noticed is how little detail there is in the world. Scenes transition without explanation, for example they were in a building, I think, one paragraph, and the next paragraph they were in the forest with no explanation why they were heading there l, until they're there.
The main character will worry about blowing her cover and act in a certain way to keep from being discovered; in the next sentence she is displaying her expertise and no one questions this.
I got halfway through this book before calling it quits. This book feels like it was written by a teenager with little understanding of how characters should act, or how a book should flow through a story. Events happen to the characters instead of characters influancing events, giving the book an "on the rails" kind of feel.
I was hoping, after reading the reviews, that this would be a good book. Unfortunately, if you like major explanations like, why is this country with no resources and no strategic value being attacked by other countries, than this isn't the book for you. The worst part is any information you do gain isn't organic, most of the story is doled out through exposition dumps at random points.

A new world
Enjoyed the romp of the book and the world the author created. My main complaint is with the narration. There is a woman and a man, and one would think that the man would do the man's parts, the woman the woman's. But no. When the female voice tried to do the men's voices she sounded like Cookie Monster, and the man has a smarmy way with one particular character that makes my skin crawl.
The story finished on a cliffhanger and the sequel isn't out yet, so had I know that I would have waited to have the full series available. And my hope is that the producers re-think the narration.

Epic!!!
What a refreshing and epic new series! The end left me with chills and praise for the heroine. I am in love with the characters, the writing, the world building, and the story line. Bad ass women are the icing on the cake . The romance was a slow and realistic burn, but man was it hot once it was lit. The action and intrigue kept me engaged and on my toes.. I finished this in one night. Who needs sleep when you have an audible of badassery?? Both narrators were excellent. Now I have to endure the wait for the next book, woe is me!!!!

Great story can we do without the crude sex though?
I’ve enjoyed all three books, the concept and story driving me to keep listening. But I wonder how many chapters of this trilogy are just base graphic sexual descriptions. Ok we get they are super in Earth shaking love, but it feels a bit too much like padding the length of the book out rather than actually adding to the story. Unless you are appealing to a non story centric market I guess. 🤷🏻♀️

Predictable storyline but enjoyable
Love the narrators. The sound of the storm before each chapter is a bit repetitive. I mean I like some sound but if each time it’s a new sound it would be more exciting. Story is very predictable but I mean it’s a good read/listen to pass time. So I am able to finish it. Looking forward to the next book.

Incredible!
I absolutely loved this story! It took me a few chapters to get used to the males voice, but everything about the storyline was perfect! Action, romance and a strong woman!

Okay book with bad voice acting
Unfortunately this audiobook was slightly ruined by the male voice actor… In my opinion some of his characters were so annoying, I almost stopped listening

Good story ruined by terrible narrators. DNF
The story seems good so I'm going to buy the book. Two dreadful narrators especially the male so that each is narrating the same characters in different ways and different voices. Which makes noooo sense and you cannot connect with characters as a result.

Meh
Not enough fire for me. The story was ok but didn't keep me at the edge of my seat. It was enjoyable enough. The narration wasn't great. I didn't like the voices she gave the male characters and I wasn't a big fan of the switching of narrators through the book.

Everything I could ask for in a book
Couldn’t stop listening, absolutely loved the tropes and the overall story. The narrators did a great job too!

Never read a Novel
I've never read a novel never wanted to let us know interested me reading books but listen to audible is amazing with the different characters voices sounds in the backgrounds just gets me intrigued and see me I can't sleep at night I just put my headphones on and I can listen to the story for as long as I like this book is amazing and has drawn into where I'm now onto the second book and can't wait for more so I wish audible was around years ago cos I feel that made my life much happier

What a waste of time
I wish I could get the hours back that I wasted reading this.
Unfortunately the choices made for some of the character's voices were so jarring that I switched between listening to the audiobook and reading the ebook. I just couldn't take the plot seriously with those narration choices.
This was a pretty cool concept, and had it been written and performed a bit differently maybe I'd have enjoyed it more. But we'll never know.
It's been months since I've read this and I can't remember anything positive about it whatsoever. The miscommunication (or complete lack of communication) trope was really frustrating and made for a really unsatisfying arc for Lara and Aren, and it completely demolished any intention I had of giving the second book a go.
I don't think I'll be picking up any of Danielle L. Jensen's other books.

A terrible cover for a surprisingly excellent book
This book kept creeping into my recommendations, and I resisted for a while because the cover page looked so bad. I downloaded it one night on a whim, and was instantly sucked into the story. It is well written with good voice acting. Not the perfect plot but certainly a cut about most other books in this genre! Aren's character felt a little shallow, but this is made up in book two.

How are people giving this 5 stars..?
Yeh nah...
Honestly, I did judge this book by the cover... And the 5 STAR ratings.
Though I'm struggling to find why it receives such a high rating. Really I'm trying DESPERATELY to like this book.
Concept is good, but it lacks soul... unless it's the narration? Especially the male voice... Don't even get me started on that.
I'm bored.
So bored.
So very bored.
The only part I like so far is the bath. Soap & Towel. IYKYK
If you make it that far... congrats.
I'm near end of Book 1. I won't be continuing with this series.

What a read!
The tension between the main two is so good! I loved the world we were taken into and I wish there was more steamy scenes! Readings were great and I liked the voices!

+18 NA Fantasy Romance - enemies-to-lovers
4.5/5 ⭐️
2/5 🌶
- marriage of convienience/forced marriage
- enemies to lovers
- spy fem lead - kick-ass fighter warrior fem
- forced proximity
- steamy tension building + angst
- miscommunication (a little)
- spice
These two are 'true' enemies-to-lovers where she is sent to marry to the enemy, and enemy thinks the marriage is to signify peace between the warring nations however she is not just any princess, she has been trained from a young age in order to bring down the enemy kingdom and 'end the warring once in for all'. She is in a mission to destroy this kingdom, the more she gets to learn about her new husband and his kingdom however, more and more things seem to make less sense from what she was told.
- very fast paced writing style
- easy read
- great plot
- very interesting world <3
Really enjoyed it.
Ends on a cliff hanger. Part of a duology.
