Publisher's Summary

What if you fell in love with the one person you’d sworn to destroy?

Lara has only one thought for her husband on their wedding day: I will bring your kingdom to its knees. A princess trained from childhood to be a lethal spy, Lara knows that the Bridge Kingdom represents both legendary evil - and legendary promise. The only route through a storm-ravaged world, the Bridge Kingdom controls all trade and travel between lands, allowing its ruler to enrich himself and deprive his enemies, including Lara’s homeland. So when she is sent as a bride under the guise of fulfilling a treaty of peace, Lara is prepared to do whatever it takes to fracture the defenses of the impenetrable Bridge Kingdom.

But as she infiltrates her new home - a lush paradise surrounded by tempest seas - and comes to know her new husband, Aren, Lara begins to question where the true evil resides. Around her, she sees a kingdom fighting for survival, and in Aren, a man fiercely protective of his people. As her mission drives her to deeper understanding of the fight to possess the bridge, Lara finds the simmering attraction between her and Aren impossible to ignore. Her goal nearly within reach, Lara will have to decide her own fate: Will she be the destroyer of a king or the savior of her people?

The beginning of an epic romance

It’s been a few months now since I listened to The Bridge Kingdom, but I’m still thinking about how much I enjoyed it. I’ll occasionally go back and look at all the positive reviews and feel proud of this little gem for doing so well since it’s come out. It’s a really fun romantic fantasy, exactly my cup of tea, with a clever plot and engaging characters that kept me tuned in. I loved that the heroine had to pretend to be meek but was actually an assassin—we get to keep this little secret in our back pocket until wham! Lara plays her hand just right. And it’s the beginning of a series so we are going to be getting more of Lara and Aren soon! If you like a fast-paced romantic fantasy with a kickass heroine and a slow burn relationship, I recommend you pick this one up. —Melissa B., Audible Editor

Editorial Review

This book will trigger fellow fantasy romance lovers

While I was in the midst of this book, every hour of my day that I was not listening felt like a wasted hour. Needless to say, I finished it pretty quickly. I will admit that in the beginning I hated our main character, Lara, because I thought she had done a terrible, terrible deed that I could not forgive her for. But when I found out how wrong I was, I loved Lara more fiercely than I had hated her. Narrators Lauren Fortgang and James Patrick Cronin were absolutely perfectly cast. Their performances elicited strong emotions in me, and I devoured the drama, romance, and knife-edged tension faster than I thought possible. It was completely delicious! —Melissa B., Audible Editor

I'm Pissed

This book was fantastic...until the end, if you can call it that. There wasn't an ending, just a lead in to another book BUT there isn't another book. I listened to almost 12 hours of this book to find out it leaves you hanging???

Cliff hanger!

I wish I hadn’t spent the hours on this very slow moving book for something, albeit predictably, to finally happen only for it to end in a cliffhanger.

I love Laura fortgang aka Tillie Hooper so I was happy to hear you narration for the most part. It was just really long and a lot of boring that could easily have been completed in one book if there was no true world building going to happen.

If you want to listen maybe wait till the series is done before you get this one. I’m annoyed I wasted so much time

Enjoyable Read

I loved the Malediction series and if it's possible I think I love this one even more. Finishing this book in less than 24 hours it's no surprise that this book has made it to the top of my list of best reads in 2018.

The characters were fun and witty, passionate and strong. First person point of view switching between Lara and Aren throughout the book, which I thought was expertly done. I really enjoyed the duel perspective, it certainly brought the story together delving into both their lives. The narrators were excellent as well, which made the book that much better.

The slow burning romance was quite refreshing, rather than the insta-love many books tend to have. I wouldn't say the romance was a huge part of the book, there was a lot of spying, deceit and manipulation. All in all it was an excellent balance of many things I love in a fantasy novel.

Lara held back throughout the book, not wanting to give away her secrets. It was nice at the end to see the full extent of her training and I am so excited to see her full potential in the next book.

A war book, not a romance. Awful

I might have misunderstood the glowing recommendation for this book. The review said there were parts the listener went back to over and over. I had a completely different experience. It was horrific. The death and misery were constant. I managed to keep slogging through waiting for good news or happy conclusion, disappointed again. Absurd violence. I want to get my money back.

Edge of my seat

I actually had to take a break when the story started to reach its climax because it was so thrilling I couldn’t handle my anxiety over the characters! Thrilling and well crafted; I can’t wait for the next book! (But this is NOT “teen” reading.)

Only negatives: The obnoxious thunder and rain sound effects between chapters are just annoying and distracting. And one of the minor male character’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard - luckily not frequently heard - he’s somehow both low and high pitched at the same time.

Ugh! Nooo U DIDN’T!!

I am so MAD right now! I can’t believe the Publisher ended the Book where they did! Noooooo!! (i say that with a SMILE, because I was so into the Book I didn’t want it to End! Much Less end where it did, which was a pretty awesome moment! A Perfect Cliff Hanger type moment where You know what comes next and can’t wait to hear it happen), There had better be a Book 2 when I go looking or I may go mad waiting for its release!...Yes!, This book is one of “those” books! It draws You into the tale. It has aspects of Betrayal, Murder, Violence, A Love Story, Fighting, War, Thrills, etc..., with such well written deep characters, that You will find Yourself caring about and siding with various characters. You will come to recognize that everything in this World is not neatly Black and White, but often a murky shade of Grey and then next moment fully White or Black, before it shifts back yet again to a deeper shade of dark Grey. That is what this story is like, it oscillates back and forth between coovb

Great story - listening challenge

I love this audible original and can not wait for the next edition. However it was disconcerting to hear the changes in the narration throughout the book. You develop a connection with the voices of the characters and to hear them change every few chapters interrupted the experience of the book.

Nothing here

So I have no idea how this book is getting good reviews. The world building is horrible, character development is non existent and the book has a terrible case of slide show syndrome.

First thing I noticed is how little detail there is in the world. Scenes transition without explanation, for example they were in a building, I think, one paragraph, and the next paragraph they were in the forest with no explanation why they were heading there l, until they're there.

The main character will worry about blowing her cover and act in a certain way to keep from being discovered; in the next sentence she is displaying her expertise and no one questions this.

I got halfway through this book before calling it quits. This book feels like it was written by a teenager with little understanding of how characters should act, or how a book should flow through a story. Events happen to the characters instead of characters influancing events, giving the book an "on the rails" kind of feel.

I was hoping, after reading the reviews, that this would be a good book. Unfortunately, if you like major explanations like, why is this country with no resources and no strategic value being attacked by other countries, than this isn't the book for you. The worst part is any information you do gain isn't organic, most of the story is doled out through exposition dumps at random points.

A new world

Enjoyed the romp of the book and the world the author created. My main complaint is with the narration. There is a woman and a man, and one would think that the man would do the man's parts, the woman the woman's. But no. When the female voice tried to do the men's voices she sounded like Cookie Monster, and the man has a smarmy way with one particular character that makes my skin crawl.
The story finished on a cliffhanger and the sequel isn't out yet, so had I know that I would have waited to have the full series available. And my hope is that the producers re-think the narration.

Epic!!!

What a refreshing and epic new series! The end left me with chills and praise for the heroine. I am in love with the characters, the writing, the world building, and the story line. Bad ass women are the icing on the cake . The romance was a slow and realistic burn, but man was it hot once it was lit. The action and intrigue kept me engaged and on my toes.. I finished this in one night. Who needs sleep when you have an audible of badassery?? Both narrators were excellent. Now I have to endure the wait for the next book, woe is me!!!!

A solid start

I was curious about this book for a while.

For a long time the book tethered along the side of being dnfed.

I am glad that I made it to the end as that one is really good and shows the potential this series holds.

I spy with my little eye.

What an incredibly amazing story, it has assassin's, an extremely sexy king and a plot that will keep you up all night listening to it. The emotions and intensity in this book is both compelling and intriguing, the storyline is nothing short of spectacular. The constant life or death moments, endless fighting and the quirky humour make for an epic adventure with characters that leave a lasting impact on you. Aren and his twin Ana are wonderfully written characters with different personalities, then there is Gorm I hope I'm spelling these right. He's harsh but a hilarious character that I couldn't help but like, along with many others who captured my heart too. The ending was one of those where you have to check to see if there's more only to realise you have to wait for the next book to find out what happens, and honestly I need the next book because oh my god it will drive me insane not knowing what happened. This is a series that I could read many times and still be blown away by the storyline.

Under the radar Magnificence

I picked it this book up only as an audiobook as I had seen the cover not really expecting much but something to pass the time. I admit...I was wrong.

Enemies to lovers to enemies. world building, nail biting. this book is glorious. I listened on audiobook and at points was too anxious about continuing. 26 pages #iukuk A MUST for readers of Sarah J Maas, Raven Kennedy et Al

please please give it a try ..Xxx and then I bought the hardbacks.

it might just be my new favourite 😍

Epic book

This book is amazing. Despite it starting with a mass “murder” it was never too graphic and gruesome. There was a lot of tension and I was on the edge of my sit often. This book was beautifully written and the performance was amazing. Lauren Fortgang sounds just like Tillie Cooper (my favourite narrator), so it was a treat to listen to the female narration. James voice is great as well. Can’t believe it took me so long to listen to this one - AMAZING

Captivating

I used to read a lot of fantasy in my early 20’s. Although I still enjoy it, most of them seem a bit cute and childish to me now.
This trilogy is the adult version of fantasy. It’s captivating, emotional, brutal and romantic at the same time.
No magic or dragons, but it doesn’t need it.

AMAZING!!

This was an awesome audiobook! While this is an obvious romance, I loved how the relationship was developed and alternatively destroyed. You will definitely find yourself invested in this book and feeling very passionate about certain parts in the story, wanting to yell at the characters - at least, I know I did. The whole story is amazing with unique plot twists that you don’t see coming until too late. The female protagonist - Lara - is a character that is both easy to love, but also unpredictable in certain aspects, having grown up in isolation left to be indoctrinated by her father and his men. The narration of this audiobook was also amazing, definitely helping to add more description to the characters that I wouldn’t have thought about while reading it. I would definitely recommend this book, but would advise that if you do, you ensure you have access to the next book as well due to the cliffhanger that this book has. This is definitely a favourite of mine and one I hope you find to be your favourite as well. Enjoy!!

Auren should have a sexy male male voice!

When are audiobooks going to wake up to the fact that most romantic fiction are read or listened to by women. I agree with a previous reviewer the male voice(s) in this book were insipid. All heroes of romantic audiobooks should have a sexy male voice.

This book had an excellent plot with lots of exciting physicality which smoothly transferred across into an audiobook. Not all books move easily into this genre & only well written ones are successful. BUT the male voices were below par.

Despite these failings I am still going to listen to the audiobook sequel The Traitor Queen

The ending 🥲

It took a while for me to get into this book. But in the last stretch damn was I invested!

It’s about a princess being married off to a kind of another territory. But what the king doesn’t know is the princess is a spy wanting to take over their import/export to save her home land. Throughout the book the princess learns more about about this new land she has been married into. She finds out there are things that she was not told growing up and things she was lied too about. After getting attached to this new land, will she still destroy it to save her home people?

Loved this. Great story line and the narration is top notch… very easy to listen to voices with good distinction of characters. Keen to see what happens next.
