Interesting but anti western civilization

There is no doubt that the British empire was a massive force for good and improved the subject people's lives immensely. They brought science, progress, industrialization, law and order, longer lives, and a higher standard of living everywhere they went. This is book is biased against the British empire. The subject people's would still be doing rain dances, killing each other, and dying of disease and childbirth without the British.

Great presentation of a broad historical narrative

I think it's a credit to narrator Corrie James, that she was able to bring a consistent voice to what is a collection of essays from different authors edited by Stephen W. Sears. That's no small feat. I learned a lot about Britain and how the empire got its start and was maintained throughout WWII. I think the book falls apart a little in its explanations of how the empire itself disintegrated. But overall it's a good read. And I appreciate James' narration enough to seek out other audio books she narrates.

TOP KNOTCH!

Another great work by"Sears"! He has ventured forth and brought his excellence into realms beyond his usual American Civil War subject matter, which I have always enjoyed. WELL DONE! Simply Well done! And kudos to Carrie James for his pleasing audio presentation also!

Intersting but a little superficial

While it was well worth the listen and very interesting, the essays only give a cursory outline of their subjects. One gets no inside about what the Empire was like for the non white subjects, how the Empire effected anyone in England, or the economics of the empire.

Pro-British Empire

This is an overview of the British Empire spanning over 500 years with different authors for each chapter. However the narration makes this seamless. However it is very pro-British with very little analysis. Entire books have been written on each chapter. Overall it is a good entry level story but for greater depth and analysis Jan Morris' trilogy is better

A Balanced History

This book provides a fair and balanced history of the British Empire, it points out moment of glory without being ignorant of the negatives such as the developed racism of the 19th century.

well read in audiobook form it is a gental listen that does the empire justice

Exactly what it says on the tin

This book is very well delivered, and it covers absolutely everything you can think of. I could not have hoped for a more comprehensive book on the matter. The introduction is a little bit slow but once worked through it is certainly worth while.

Truly comprehensive

The British empire will likely go down as the definitive account of imperial British society
