Story
The King's Challenge - it was a proving ground for warriors in the Essalieyan Empire, the hallowed contest that made legends of men. And for Valedan, last survivor of the ruling family of the Dominion, it was a declaration of his right to claim the throne stolen from the Leonne clan by treachery and assassination. Failure to earn the title of King's Champion would not deprive Valedan of either his Dominion or Essalieyan allies, but winning would announce to the world that he was no callow boy, no mere pawn in the games of power.

After the near-destruction of the High Halls, Corporal Kaylin Neya is looking forward to resuming her patrol. But once more an empty Tower stands in Elantra, and Kaylin's companions won't let an advantage slip by. They see the Tower as a base to fight Shadow; the Dragon Bellusdeo, as a protection for the cohort; Sedarias, as a potential hoard. And others are interested as well. Kaylin knows when she's in over her head. Claiming a Tower is not the future she wants. And the Tower has strict requirements—ones that daunt even the Dragons and the Barrani.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

The truth is neither plain nor simple. Sable, a reluctant thief from the slums, can feel truth when people speak. For years she’s been using that skill to try to break free from the vicious gang boss to whom she's indebted. Escape comes in the form of an odd set of companions: a dwarf running from the past, an actor with a magical, glowing tree, a too-helpful kobold, a playwright with a knack for getting stories out of people, and a man and woman with suspicious, magical powers. But Sable’s freedom is short lived.

Story
To the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles, the orphan Pug came to study with the master magician Kulgan. But though his courage won him a place at court and the heart of a lovely princess, he was ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry. Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to being again the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.

Publisher's Summary
Tor Leonne - the heart of the Dominion of Annagar, where the games of state are about to become a matter of life and death - and where those who seek to seize the crown will be forced to league with a treacherously cunning ally....
Tor Leonne, ancestral seat of power, where Serra Diora Maria di'Marano - the most sought-after beauty in the land, a woman betrayed by all she holds dear - may strike the first blow to change the future of the Dominion and Empire alike....
Averalaan Aramarelas - that most ancient of civilized cities, the home of the Essalieyan Imperial court - has long been a center of magics both dark and bright. And though the Empire won its last war with the Dominion, and survived a devastating, magic-fueled battle with a far deadlier foe, both those victories were not without their cost....
But now, the realm is on the brink of a far greater confrontation, faced with an unholy alliance that could spell the end of freedom for all mortal-kind.

Plodding, Tedious, and Female
This book should never be attempted for the first time via audio. The author introduces too many people and too much social complexity to make listening to the painfully incremental plot enjoyable. This is one of those talented Authors who needs an editor who understands the cost-benefit of a story.
At some juncture, only a woman can appreciate the endless navel gazing of female angst within an emotional, plodding fantasy. The exaggerated male and female Adonis attractions are unnecessary and irritating.
It is a shame to see this writer’s skill squandered on such superficial artifice. Occasionally, the narrators voice is incongruent with the proceeding atmospherics, such as, “he quietly murmured.”

Another droning narrator...
...Ruins an old favorite. It has been 20+ years since I read this book, I still have my paperbacks of the series, and I was pleased to see it arrive on Audible. Unfortunately, I only lasted ... less than three hours. I tried, but the narrator's droning voice is just terrible, and I quite dislike how she reads men--they all sound mostly the same. She is the same reason I could not get through through the first of the House Wars books. I should have known this would be no better. Not even going to keep it, another return. Amazing how the dislike of a narrator can kill an old favorite. I am sure many people will love this, but I'm just going to find the paperbacks and reread the series that way. I still hope that they produce West's Hunter's Oath and Hunter's Death, without Eva Wilhelm. Please?

Not what I expected
This book starts off interestingly enough with a young girl who uses her magic to Heal people. Once that scene happened the super confusing names, realms, kings & queens had me shaking my head.
To the author;
Please give your characters easy names, especially if you want to move them forward, backwards, sideways" in time or another realm.
